Trailer

Wikipedia

The first film Sisu was a Finnish national/military propaganda film, kind of like Top Gun is to America. It followed the events around a fictional John Wick-esque character as he confounds the Nazis during their retreat out of Finland at the end of WW2. I don’t remember much from that movie, but I think the presence of the Soviets was minor.

This one looks different. Si2u is set in 1946, just after the war, and now the villain is the Soviet Union.

I swear to God Finland is the embodiment of horseshoe theory and double genocide myth. It’s weird that movies like this still get made in 2025.

There is absolutely a demand for this sort of thing right now imo as they are manufacturing consent for war and fueling hate towards Russians. In reality there likely is far more ambivalence in the population and our overlords know it. They are trying to cement the progress they have made in the last decades, a long project from finlandization to neoliberalism and nato. Afaik there is also a movie in the making about the nazi sniper right now and it would have been literally impossible a few decades ago.

The nato push is very important to the ruling class. The nationalistic war movie scene really took off after the fall of the Soviet Union in the 90s, as did nationalism and neo nazis. The reactionaries and the ruling class were and are able to voice nationalistic shit pretty much unchecked and things like the discourse around the statue of the White Killer (mannerheim) in the 90s heralded this. It was very cringe to consider him positively 20 years ago apart from bourgeoisie circles and nowadays everyone is supposedly seeing him as some sort of hero president.

Rukajärven tie was a movie that I'd say was one of the first ones fully rewriting WW2 history here, but it was less blatant. Played hard on the smol bean heroic country vibe though and the continuum from that to whatever these Sisu movies is imo clear. One big reason for these is probably the fact that these people need to keep on justifying the conscription here, even with nato in the mix, and the people who fund this shit are very much aware of their class interests. Young people need to be kept believing in the nationalist myths to get them to lay down their lives for amerikkkan interest. How well that ends up working, we probably will be forced to see.

Not only that, but there's talk of forcing women to go through it too, which is ridiculous.

Yeah, the famous "nordic equality": Everyone is equally mandated to die for capitalist imperialism.

I was surprised by the first movie because it was pretty much the only piece of media I've ever heard of that's about the Lapland War. The trailer for this sequel is literally just Finnish Rambo.
