Feel like this is one of those weird generational things, but isn't happy hotel TV just regular cable TV?

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 23 points 2 months ago

Yeah, it's just regular TV. You can probably even get it OTA with an antenna and digital tuner (which, if your TV has a coax input, is probably integrated).

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 8 points 2 months ago

They call it linear TV now

[-] bridgeenjoyer@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Yes it is, ha. I haven't had cable for 15 years

[-] JackbyDev@programming.dev 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah I would have thought hotel TV meant things like beach TV.

Not quite what you asked for, but here: https://puffer.stanford.edu/

They have a crapload of these channels on Pluto TV - which is completely free.

Feels like they've been adding more ads, but still they have a ton of stuff, the movie selection is far better than most services particularly if you like not so new movies.

As long as you have a TV made after the digital conversion in like 2008, stick a paperclip into the antenna connector and get free channels. Seriously. You'll be surprised how well it works. A real antenna is better and they're cheap too. I do this and watch Telemundo for background noise and a little bit of Spanish learning.

I don't really understand the interface, but I hit "power" and was watching some music videos from 1994 and I appreciate you sharing this ❤️

This is just amazing! Thank you!

An antenna? If you don't have a TV, you can get a tuner dongle and antenna for your PC and use VLC or other streaming video clients. Unfortunately, the services that take over-the-air signals and put them online usually get killed off by lawsuits. But tuner dongles and half decent, compact antennas are pretty cheap.

Many of the free tier streaming services are packed with this content. Tubi, Roku, Plex Movies & TV, Google TV.

Get an iptv subscription and just watch cable. As a bonus you can watch tv in Costa Rica and Dubai and China and shit

[-] technocrit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

Or better yet. Get an iptv plater (aka VLC), find some channels, and don't pay for a subscription.

If you’re really only interested in in like forensic files and shit yeah this is probably the way to go. If you want sports you’ll have to pony up the $20-40/yr or whatever for somewhat okay plan

[-] Vendetta9076@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

How do I find a good IPTV sub though.

Hey Costa Rica is not shit!

[-] TigerAce@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

They didn't say that

[-] ragebutt@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 months ago

None of them are shit (well Dubai is).

Last time I was in Costa Rica I enjoyed myself quite a lot actually.

Here is a picture of quepos

I like the sign, like Mother Nature is out to kill your ass, but only beyond this point. Haha

There are many m3u8 playlists online. You just need a player. I think VLC is the most common but people use other players specifically for iptv. For example I use simple iptv in Kodi.

Unfortunately most playlists have lots of dead channels. There are online channel checkers but they're pretty slow. Once you get a solid lineup of working channels, it's smooth sailing.

[-] cRazi_man@europe.pub 3 points 2 months ago

Sounds like normal UK freeview terrestrial TV. I think there are freeview streaming sites and apps if you search.

[-] rhythmisaprancer@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

There are many things like this on youtube that you can watch via third party software. The FBI files, all sorts of Alaska things, not sure about reruns. Ibjave used freetube for a long time but it doesn't always work. Not working at all on Linux right now. At least not with the latest update. Newpipe still works if you are on mobile.

Same — hotel TV is peak guilty-pleasure territory! Forensic Files at 3 a.m., Alaska Survival, and Family Guy reruns are my go-tos — there’s something weirdly comforting about slope rider flipping channels in a hotel room.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 2 months ago

all the free tv stream things have all sorts of old shows. tubi, plutotv, roku, xemo, freevee, plex, wb.
