Mastercard should stop selling our data::We trust companies with our information every day. But many companies—even those that hold our most revealing information—are using it not just to provide the services we ask for, but to amp up their profits at the cost of our privacy. That's why EFF has joined a campaign, led by the U.S. Public...

Especially now that many vendors are passing on the processing fee, it's not even a free/subsidized service for customers anymore.

And yet what can we do when there's practically a duopoly? We can't hardly choose a credit card from our bank and choose Visa or MasterCard. It's "you get a card and here's what you get"

We need Congress to pass legislation that creates an open standard. The issue could be forced by passing legislation at the state level, too. That may be difficult though, as interstate commerce clause might come into play. But states where citizens can get initiatives on the ballot would be one way to start the fire.

We already have a open standard for payments in india in form of UPI. Just scan the qr code and the money will be transferred directly from one bank account to another.

I use cash for most ( <$20 ) daily purchases.

It's a small thing, but it's one of the few things I can do to push back a tiny bit.

It's a good suggestion. It's even better for smaller businesses

What do you mean "the" processing fee? Let me introduce you to this hell.

Is MasterCard worse than Visa in this respect? Why did the EFF just single them out?

[-] Zoboomafoo@lemmy.world 13 points 1 year ago

As best I can tell, this is EFF focusing their attention on a single target, instead of just making broad "The industry must change" statements

Should be designed to not collect our data in the first place.

Owning your data is seeming less and less possible. Even paying in cash isn't an option in some places now

Some municipalities had passed laws saying that retail businesses had to accept cash since going 100% electronic is discriminatory towards the poor. But covid fucked that up

It’d be cool if everyone would stop selling our data.

can you imagine the audacity of a company to not only collect your data and sell it, but also charge you for that?

“No.” - Mastercard

Do they really sell such kind of information? Is there any source? Honestly curious. There are regulations for such companies when it comes to customer data
