The Thayer amendment, added by a Republican representative to a federal appropriations bill in 1866, states explicitly that "no portrait or likeness of any living person shall be engraved or placed upon any of the bonds, securities, notes, or postal currency of the United States."

Maybe the rumors of bad health are true and they're getting ready 🤞

Law, what law?

An explanation of the legislation on an archived page from the Treasury’s website noted that the act “was caused by an uproar over the actions of the chief of the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Spencer Clark,” who had “placed himself on a five-cent note and had a large quantity of them printed before it was noticed.”

That webpage has been removed from the Treasury’s website.

A Treasury spokesman did not immediately respond to a request for comment about the legality of featuring Mr. Trump on the coin.

I hope so too, but I’m sure it’s just sycophants doing sycophant stuff.

Do you think they've bothered to trademark it? Could get some coins custom printed like this and beat them to market

[-] silence7@slrpnk.net 3 points 1 month ago

In general, the US makes it illegal to produce anything which people could be reasonably expected to confuse for actual US currency unless you're doing at the behest of the government.

It's probably a lot more effective to build a stamping machine which re-stamps them with a Traitor label on the head, and a Russian flag on the back.

Movie magic means you can get away with it by adding a little "Not legal tender; for motion picture use only" on there, but I do like your idea

This is so awesome. I can add it to my collection of commemorative Star Wars coins. I bet it’ll appreciate in value 🤣

I figure it’ll be like Nazi memorabilia in a few years.
