Honestly, it sounds like the cop was trying to be respectful while looking up their (potential) files.

Changing your name and changing the paperwork identifying your gender and then acting offended when officials need help tracking your identity is not a play to get sympathy from the people who are on the fence about gender issues.

The person in question was filming at a bus station, which could be a confrontational activity when police are present; I’m not sure if you need to identify yourself in Canada in that situation.

In any case it seems like a tempest in a teapot and a whole lot of complaining about someone who was trying to handle the situation as well as they were able. It’s not like the officer spent the next hour interrogating them using the wrong name.

Changing your name and changing the paperwork identifying your gender

Human rights

officials need help tracking your identity

this contradicts what you said right before, is she has her documents in order, he has no business digging up her deadname

is not a play to get sympathy from the people who are on the fence

these people can fuck off to the sun at this point, siding with literal nazis

It’s not like the officer spent the next hour interrogating them using the wrong name.

Her. And it's not like I called you nazi for a whole hour, just once.

I’m glad you are passionate about this. It’s important to have people with views on all sides.

But calling someone a nazi for simply acknowledging that there are people who don’t actively promote trans rights on the internet? That’s not helping your case.

[-] traceur402@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 5 days ago

I think this holding some imaginary group's approval overhead like a carrot on a stick is nazi crap too, for what it's worth

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 7 points 5 days ago

You and your attitude are a detriment to the fight. Shut the fuck up and stop making this harder.

[-] corsicanguppy@lemmy.ca 6 points 5 days ago

literal nazis

You lost? Those aren't even figurative Nazis like American cops; and absolutely not literal Nazis. Please stop calling Canadians Nazis just for effect.

[-] panathea@lemmy.blahaj.zone 14 points 5 days ago

Still could have used "legal name" but, yeah, doesn't sound like she was trying to humiliate her or anything.

[-] frongt@lemmy.zip 5 points 5 days ago

Yup. Asking for previous names is pretty standard when doing government identity stuff.

[-] marcela@lemmy.blahaj.zone 8 points 5 days ago

If she has her documents in order he has no business disrespecting a protected characteristic so blatantly. Do you have any previous girl names by any chance? Just asking, because you don't come down as quite manly, lol

Sorry what?

That's weird, please don't say things like that to people.

[-] Hacksaw@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 days ago

the officers had demanded she stop filming and give her name, which she refused

Oh no she was filming.... Definitely worth spending police time investigating. If they can't articulate a suspected crime that can't detain you or order you to present documentation.

Stop the boot licking. This isn't a case of a rightful arrest where she was impeding the investigation by not revealing past legal names and aliases.

She's a professional victim. Your friendly reminder that being trans doesn't have anything to do with whether or not someone is a good person.

[-] marcela@lemmy.blahaj.zone 19 points 5 days ago

I will only concede to that truism when the idea that being trans makes you unworthy of respect is eradicated.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 4 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

So you automatically assume trans folks are good people? OK. I'm trans. I am now a great human being. You have to believe that. You just said so.

People like you use "trans" to virtue signal and it's disgusting. Works quite well around here though!

[-] FleetwoodLinux@lemmy.zip 7 points 5 days ago

If you read their comment you'd know that's not what they were saying. All they're suggesting is that being trans doesn't automatically make someone unworthy of respect and that the idea that it does needs to go away. This notably says nothing about trans people are automatically perfect beings as you seem to want to believe they said.

[-] shalafi@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

They were replying to:

trans doesn't have anything to do with whether or not someone is a good person

Saying that, while true, they wouldn't validate the belief until trans disrespect is done with. That's fucking silly at best and detrimental at worst.

Bunch of angry (hateful?) people in this thread didn't even watch the video, yet know all about what happened.
