I have never attempted honor mode because the idea that I can put hours into a game and it all get fucked by one mistake scares me too much lol
Ever since I failed to do a Mein Leben run for Wolfenstein 2, I've pretty much given up trying to go completionist on any game with an ironman achievement.
How? Overpowered to the point of being outright broken character builds, long rests, speed potions/haste, and knowing when to take each encounter.

It's definitely a 2nd playthrough experience though. There are some things that are bullshit that I wouldn't know about on my first playthrough, instant-kill mechanics or falling where I didn't realize I would.
Yeah, Honor Mode is not just like "hard mode +". It is "fuck you, you think you remember the encounters? hope you get it in one"
if you have enough game knowledge, many things are possible. There are streamers who full clear the game solo without multiclassing, cheesing or using the forbidden dark art of barrelmancy. You just need to know which fights to avoid until certain breakpoints, when to flee combat, how to skirmish and kite with the mobile feat, how to quickly get your build online, etc. You also use shovel (the little demon, not the tool) a lot to trigger fights so you don't get surprised.
For example, you can get to level 4 without any combat whatsoever after the tutorial. Just by using enhanced leap and featherfall and jumping around doing dialogue checks disguised as drow. Level 5 is the major power spike where the player becomes a lot stronger (Level 3 spells and Extra Attack). Once you're 5 you can basically solo all honor mode combat with the proper gear and elixirs and tactics.
There are a couple of mandatory fights you can't flee from (Act 2 boss has one in particular). You do need to prepare for Myrkul with Doom Hammer, darkness arrows or spells, lots of grenades, lots of speed pots, etc. You also need crit immunity (adamantine shield or armor for the most part), a death ward/cheat death effect (half-orc is the meta but not required) and complete knowledge of everything that can paralyze you (fuck hold person, gnome is the 2nd best in the meta for this reason). Those things are game over at some point if you don't have a way to prevent it or get ahead of it.
I'm not ashamed that I did attempt barrelmancy with Ansur, but it ended up doing basically nothing and then Gale did his scorching ray thing and 2 shot the fucker. My cheese consisted entirely of Open Hand Monk Laezel, Tavern Brawler throw barb karlach, ABSOLUTELY BROKEN AS FUCK Scorching Ray 11sorc/1warlock Gale, and 6/6pallylock Wyll with 30 AC
I'm more worried/paranoid about save breaking
i did have save corrupt at some point late act 2/early act 3 and i was able to find the save, copy it and rename it. then put it back in the correct spot and everything was good. got the achievement, golden dice, all that. it was incredibly disheartening and for basically the last half of my game i was unsure if it would "count" but it did so if that's all that's holding you back i wouldn't worry too hard. just copy your save data whenever you quit for the day if you're super paranoid
