I have LineageOS for MicroG 22.2 on my phone. I have also rooted my phone using Magisk.

I want to update my LineageOS version (newer build of 22.2, not to 23), and I want to confirm that the process I plan to take would be correct.

  1. I know to uninstall Magisk, then install the update without rebooting, then install Magisk to the inactive slot.
  2. Since I'm not using MindTheGapps, I'm pretty sure I don't need to reboot into recovery to sideload anything. Therefore, I can just reboot as normal.

For LineageOS for MicroG, is this all I need to do or am I missing something?

For updates between minor versions, I just use the LOS updater in settings. I haven't seen any suggestions to uninstall Magisk beforehand, is that device specific perhaps?

I do usually need to patch and flash a file to get root again after installation.

This method is to preserve root after updating instead of having to reflash it again.

TIL. Will have to look it up for future updates. Preserving root is really the only drawback of updating LOS/mG.

what's this other slot thing, can you explain it a bit? I've seen the option but never used it.

I do it the stupid way, rarely update LOS precisely because I have to reinstall magisk again.

Modern phones (after about 2016) use two boot slots for for the bootloader.

Per non_burglar... It's called A/B boot. The purpose is to enable live update. Update while using the device without interruption, then when it finishes, the next reboot uses the new version. Thus, an update/upgrade is actually updating the "slot" not currently in use.

This is how I remember it is supposed to work, but at some point I had problems with it. Lately I've been downloading the boot image to patch and flash it.
