Moving to NYC for free hrt in my drinking water.
It's better to get it from donations, rather than having it completely funded by private corporations with their own interests like every other NYC mayor does.
Why are there "transition expenses"? Isn't this just a normal passing of the batton in the ebb and flow of the city?
Seems like another avenue to set up for corruption. Like those large inagural ~~donations~~ bribes.
Transition expenses would be many things, basically the operating expenses of him and his staff from now to Jan 1. For example, all of the people he is bringing on like Lina Khan, need salaries, office space, transportation costs, and the other running expenses that are needed before he has the key to city hall.
I'm sure that there will also be some of the money for parties and celebrations, for example I just saw a post of his volunteer appreciation party.
This campaign is to avoid such large bribes that you bring up. He wants to fund the transition with individual donations rather than have Doordash and AIPAC foot the bill as most do.

Nah, it's pretty normal. The transition expenses for the mayor in my town were also around $5mil and we only have 5000 people!
Sadly it bankrupted us, so now the local police just volunteer to shake us down for cash and rob our grandmas. /s
(NYC is insane, everything is 100x extra there)
