Hillary Clinton is facing a deluge of criticism after stating that young Americans' growing support for Palestinians is influenced by "totally made-up" videos on TikTok and suggesting that American youth - including young Jews - "don't know history and don't understand" Israel's war on Gaza.

Speaking on Tuesday at a summit hosted by the right-wing Israeli paper Israel Hayom in New York City, the former Democratic presidential candidate expressed her concerns that “smart, well-educated young people” in America and around the world are getting a lot of their information, including about Israel and Palestine, from social media platforms like TikTok.

The former US secretary of state described it as "serious problem for democracy", remarking that when she attempted to have "reasonable discussions" with young people, it was challenging because “they did not know history, they had very little context, and what they were being told on social media was not just one-sided, it was pure propaganda".

Look, lady, at some point the prior history doesn't matter. The history we're experiencing right the fuck now is a single day, a single attack, by Hamas responded to by two fucking solid years of calculated extermination and nullification of the Palestinian people.

It doesn't fucking matter what happened thirty god damned years ago when the average age in Gaza before Oct 7th 2023 was fucking sixteen! Guess what Hillary you fucking idiot, 16 year olds haven't been alive long enough to have had anything to fucking do with that history!

The fucking audacity of her ass to be talking about the "history!"

Of all people, this bitch deserved to lose to Trump. She even used her connections to promote him in the media because she was fucksure she would end up in the general election against Jeb Bush. That's what you get for fucking over Bernie Sanders!

Agreed. These "centrists" can go sit on a cactus

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 11 points 3 weeks ago

We need to stop calling them centrists and call a spade a spade. They're conservatives, plain and simple.

[-] Cruxifux@feddit.nl 3 points 3 weeks ago

I don’t even like using that stupid left-right sliding scale to describe American politicians anymore. That’s not what most of these people are. They are just conduits for oligarchy to filter money from the working class to the elites and don’t hold any real personal ideology beyond that. They campaign on divisive social issues but for the majority of them that’s really where it truly ends within the context of political ideology as a working class man OR as someone who studies the philosophy of politics understands it.

[-] minnow@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

You've successfully and correctly identified the problem with using the "left-right sliding scale" to describe America as being that there is no left.

[-] Ryanmiller70@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 weeks ago

More like Pokemon Go to the grave

[-] Sanctus@lemmy.world 18 points 3 weeks ago

Go fight Donnie over Bubba's dick and shut the fuck up. Genocide is bad, mmmkay? Can't believe its hard to grasp.

[-] WhatAmLemmy@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

It's only hard to grasp because her and the entire politician class have been receiving ~~donations~~ bribes from Israel for decades.

[-] Gates9@sh.itjust.works 14 points 3 weeks ago

Hillary Clinton is literally a psychopath

gee maybe you should ask your mentor, arch fucking ghoul nixon enabler Henry Kissinger for some advice IN HELL

[-] Tinks@lemmy.world 8 points 3 weeks ago

I spent two years in college studying the history of the Middle East and specifically the conflict between Israel and Palestine. I have never been on TikTok. Then where the fuck did my pro-Palestine views come from? I know the history very well and Israel has been unreasonable assholes from the beginning. Yes, Hamas and Palestine need to stop leading with violence, but when you're fighting for your country's literal existence it's a bit of a moral grey area. The whole situation is a shit show and it infuriates me that Israel has so much support from the US. Without the 800lb gorilla backing them I feel like they'd have been forced to negotiate a reasonable solution long ago. Instead, here we are with a wildly disproportionate response that is 2 years long and the US has effectively cheered them on.

Hilary and her entire generation of politicians can get fucked.

[-] DickFiasco@sh.itjust.works 6 points 3 weeks ago

Ah yes, because some historical context will certainly justify the genocide.

[-] mrdown@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

Historical context show that palestinians was victim of settler colonialism and ethrnic cleansing

[-] Falafelicious@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

Even then it doesn't. Palestinians have been there for thousands of years. They didn't just appear overnight. They're the remnants of Canaanites and Jews who stayed after they were exiled. Many of them adopted Islam and Arab culture during the conquests. Arabs didn't come in and wipe out the indigenous population and replace them. Same with Egyptian, Libyan, and Turkish people. That's why they're not all the same and have drastically different cultures and languages, and not just standard Arabic.

[-] Vrijgezelopkamers@lemmy.world 6 points 3 weeks ago

Prime example of how boomers lack media literacy skills.

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 5 points 3 weeks ago

That's weird because I've never been on that app, am older, and probably hold some similar views. So where are my views coming from? You just have to have a heart and then you can see things correctly. It's only fair to hold standards against everyone. Israel doesn't get a pass. Not on morality.

[-] BassTurd@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Hillary... You're barely a has-been at best, and Bill cuck at worst. Kindly fuck off into obscurity and even more irrelevance, nobody wants to hear your dog shit, conservative opinion.

[-] Archangel1313@lemmy.ca 3 points 3 weeks ago

I can't believe people still pay her to speak at these events. What a waste of money.

[-] UnderpantsWeevil@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

Not at all. She's a node in a national network of reactionary plutocrats. What you're hearing is the echo of dozens of NYC billionaires and their multi-millionaire subordinates all chanting the same thing.

Hillary is a megaphone one group of rich people use to talk to another

[-] alias_qr_rainmaker@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

I think the Google Maps view of the whole fucking Middle East is why people support Palestine

"There didn't used to be a hole there....something ain't right"

[-] Xanthobilly@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Better yet, just look at historical maps of the region and see how long the Zionist effort has been going on. She’s out of touch and THATS WHY SHE LOST TO TRUMP.

[-] Geobloke@aussie.zone 0 points 3 weeks ago

Just had a look, unfortunately google maps doesn't look like it has been updated with the more recent photos. The only indication that something is amiss is how pretty much everything is "temporarily closed."

[-] zr0@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 3 weeks ago

No one likes you or your opinions, Hillary. Your time was over when you lost to Piggy. That was 11 years ago. Now just stfu.

[-] PKscope@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

While I concede it's not only possible, but in fact, likely that many people are unaware of the 10 volume set of War and Peace size novels which recount the history of conflict in the Middle East, I find it incredibly out-of-touch that she can't understand that the starving and murder of an entire ethnic group is considered abhorrent by a large amount of the youth.

We don't need to know every facet to know genocide when we see it. I'm so tired of the constant Israel propaganda here in the states. You'd think they were the superpower and we were completely beholden to them in every way with the amount of kowtowing our politicians do. It's insane.

[-] MagnificentSteiner@lemmy.zip 2 points 3 weeks ago

Even if you read the history of Palestine for the last 100 years it only reinforces that Israel is a far-right apartheid state hellbent on the extermination of the inhabitants of that land in the name of Jewish supremacy.

[-] epicthundercat@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

She blamed Bernie Sanders for her failure and got with a dude in the Epstein files. Why would anyone trust her judgment??

[-] AoxoMoxoA@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Hey lady ! What the fuck happened to your face !? You look maga

[-] mlg@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

No its because Tik-Tok (until it got acquired by Oracle) didn't ban Palestinian content like FB, X, and YouTube.

It's infuriating that you can't even find even half decent footage of any warzone on literally any media outlet because for some magical reason it gets deleted almost immediately on social media, which leaves it in limbo on whatsapp forwards.

[-] billwashere@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

Why are these asshats so reluctant to admit that Isreal is in the wrong?!?

[-] Floon@lemmy.ml 2 points 3 weeks ago

She's not wrong about folks not knowing a lot of the history and background, but she is kind of missing the disproportionate collective punishment aspect of things. Netanyahu is forming peoples' opinions.

[-] cupcakezealot@piefed.blahaj.zone 1 points 3 weeks ago

i mean in a way tiktok is to blame or views on palestine... because tiktok was the first time you could see actual on the ground reporting from gaza instead of the sanitized version of the conflict in the us media. this is a good thing.

[-] AshMan85@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Hillary should worry more about Bill being in the epstein files and stfu

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

She should have divorced his ass years ago but she had her own ambitions. Fuck her

[-] DrFistington@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Fuck you bitch. We should have had Bernie Sanders as our president, instead we got Hilary as a failed candidate

[-] CharlesDarwin@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

She might be right about young people not having much context as a general rule - I've seen this kind of Dunning-Kruger thing before when someone in their teens/twenties first comes across something and they start to have some political awakening. Think of the way that some people fall into the most maximalist of positions on the spectrum and how cringe it often seems, often to later versions of that very person, LOL.

Anyway, I think the cracks on Israel being some united front on our "special relationship" with them and as far as the average U.S. citizen supporting it w/o question have been starting long before TikTok was even a thing.

And most of the people I've talked to over the years, or things I've seen others write/say online has had plenty of context. Hell, Chomsky has been out there talking about this for decades. It's just that the gatekeeping corporate media chokehold on people being able to talk to one another about this, en masse has been loosened, starting in the late 90s.

Used to be someone could yell "anti-semite" at anyone questioning us doing Israel's every whim and that was the end of the conversation. That tactic's effectiveness started to erode with the rise of the 'net. Are some of the people that obsess about Israel/Gaza and Jews/Palestinians anti-semitic? Of fucking course they are. Is everyone? Hell no.

[-] Vupware@lemmy.zip 1 points 3 weeks ago

There's a large gap between disliking and wishing for death, lol

[-] OldChicoAle@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

If you have the power to influence politics that will lead to the death of innocents, I think it's okay. Don't be a fucking political figure if you can't handle the heat, Clinton. It's like saying "omg don't bully celebrities". They literally put themselves in public view. Of course people will say shit. This isn't news. What else were they expecting? Everyone is nice and friendly? No, you come to expect that in the public eye.

[-] SoftestSapphic@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

Hillary Clinton is a pedophile

[-] lmmarsano@lemmynsfw.com 1 points 3 weeks ago

Speaking on Tuesday at a summit hosted by the right-wing Israeli paper Israel Hayom in New York City

She's catering to the far-right Israeli crowd under the illusion that interest group isn't popularly considered toxic & waning in influence/political power.

[-] BarbecueCowboy@lemmy.dbzer0.com 0 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I think you can kind of stretch it to be true if you try real hard but it's stupid to blame TikTok for this. TikTok skews younger, and this is a cause that is popular with the younger generation, so yes TikTok will trend as more supportive of this cause and will reinforce those views via algorithm and the algorithm does not necessarily have to care if things are factual or not so popular things will not always be factual. It's a lot of words to not say anything useful, so she's basically one step away from shitposting on Lemmy right now.

Her comments about not knowing the history are interesting to think about though, because I think she's mostly talking about the news coverage some of us grew up with. Remember that we used to think we could trust our news and there's been a lot of coverage on this historically. Most over around 30 have a pretty good memory of the coverage around 9/11 and the 'war on terror' and are pretty much done thinking about the conflict after finding out that the Palestinian government is ruled by Hamas and will at best say "I feel bad for the people who have to live in Palestine". It's even worse when you get to the 40s-50s range and have someone old enough to have watched the news when modern Palestine was kind of forming into it's current form in the 80s. Somewhere in between is anyone who at any point in time heard any coverage at all about the original charter Hamas was founded on, it's rough. Definitely didn't invent it and they weren't the only ones using the tactic, but for a lot of us, Hamas were also the first guys you heard about when you first learned the term 'Suicide Bombing' on the news too. I don't really want to see the numbers, but I do wonder who holds the record for the most suicide bombings they've publicly claimed responsibility for, we definitely at least knew who these guys were. Some people say you have to separate the people from their government and then the government from their past, but that statement resonates less and less depending on how old the person you're talking to is. Just an interesting retrospective. I still think the basis of the comment is kind of stupid, but it does bring to mind some interesting thoughts.

Interesting numbers, other sources out there will say much the same, but I've always felt that pew research bias is pretty minimal: https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2024/04/02/younger-americans-stand-out-in-their-views-of-the-israel-hamas-war/
