The US are really working hard to get prohibition, 30's great depression, and McCarthyism all at once.

[-] Tja@programming.dev 2 points 4 months ago

Some other things from the 30s, too.

[-] BoycottTwitter@lemmy.zip 8 points 4 months ago

I've been sending emails to hotel companies and urging them to oppose this. I urge you to contact your congresspeople and also companies in the travel, hospitality and tourism industry and demand they oppose this policy and more broadly ask them to stand up to Trump because he's causing people to rightfully boycott the US.

Also to everyone who is boycotting the US thank you so so much, I'm really grateful and as are so many Americans who also hate what the Trump regime is doing. The more people who boycott the more pressure it will put on companies to finally stand up against the Trump regime.

[-] mirshafie@europe.pub 1 points 4 months ago

Yeah man, just remember we love you guys despite your insane government.

"In addition to social media histories, Customs and Border Protection would add other new data collection fields, including email addresses and telephone numbers used in the last five years, as well as the addresses and names of family members, the notice reads."

Wtf I was planning to visit NYC but this is crazy man.

[-] Treczoks@lemmy.world 6 points 4 months ago

Yet another reason to avoid the US as a tourist. Looks like hotels and airlines did not bribe Trump sufficiently.

[-] k0e3@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

Seriously, this is so stupid. I'm never setting foot in US soil ever again.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

What if we Holy Roman Empire and the feds just become a figurehead element?

This is our daily reminder that the Republican party has revoked the US Constitution in its entirety.

[-] stoy@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 months ago

Ok so if I have to travel to the US for work, I will now require my employer to give me a burner phone with a burner number.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

[-] floofloof@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

It depends on their relationship with the social media companies. There's a good chance companies like Meta have already given the authorities a lot of data on their users. US law enforcement might already know about some of your accounts based on your identity, and then claiming you have none might not work well.

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 2 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

If you can't prove Social Media history, you don't get in, they arrest you, and deport you without due process to a life sentence in an El Salvador torture prison where you'll never be heard from again.

Just tell your employer you're not going.

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

My employer issues us with a wiped laptop that we can restore from cloud storage over our VPN once we're in-country. Before we return, we back it up and scrub it again. When I go to the US, I always bring a low-functioning burner phone as well.

How will they prove that I have any social media history?

Hard to say what the US government knows, or admits to knowing, about your social media usage. I almost completely stopped using social media a few years ago, except for Lemmy, and overwrote all my posts with lorem ipsum, as well as never having accessed it before that without using a VPN and doing some other obfuscation, so it'd take some effort to associate me with anything but some boring Facebook and LinkedIn updates I maintain so that certain people can still get in touch with me.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 1 points 4 months ago

If it's a US based company, the NSA has all of your web traffic to the site.

[-] tangeli@piefed.social 1 points 4 months ago

Have you heard about 'age verification' to 'protect the children'? You too will be age verified. They will know all your accounts. That's the whole point of age verification. It is to eliminate anonymity.

[-] stoy@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago

I am well aware of the bullshit that the politicians are using abused kids to push through.

[-] the_riviera_kid@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

People are already boycotting the us, they don't need another reason.

[-] Typotyper@sh.itjust.works 2 points 4 months ago

Tourism is only down 30% or so. So maybe they do need more reasons.

You think it's going to stop there? US citizens will soon have to do the same, or be on the no fly list.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 1 points 4 months ago

Those lazy fucks, they've already had those data for years!

How on earth can the people who voted for this piece of shit not see him for the coward that he is?

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 4 months ago

I guess I'm going have to get some sort of Social Media account that I don't currently use, and keep up with fake postings, just so I have something to show the Redhats when they stop my on the street and say "Ihre papiere, bitte!"

[-] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 3 points 4 months ago

Soon it will be easier to visit North Korea than the USA, which I suspect is the plan.

[-] skozzii@lemmy.ca 3 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

We have already postponed our Disney trip until the cheeto is gone.

I am prepared to go to Europe or Japan instead though if America can't figure its issues out.

[-] D_C@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

Or, and hear me out on this, he can fuck right off.

Then again I'm not the target for this type of tyrannical despotism because there's absolutely no chance I'd ever willingly visit that place.

[-] Tronn4@lemmy.world 3 points 4 months ago

You're not the target yet

[-] slickgoat@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

It's like getting banned from smacking my own balls with a hammer.

Oh noes!

[-] phutatorius@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago

You realize that you don't have to go to Florida?

But how else am I supposed to pet the alligators? Do you seriously expect me to go all the way to Africa to pet the crocodiles in the Nile instead?

[-] Foni@lemmy.zip 2 points 4 months ago

I feel sorry for anyone who has to go for work; I imagine tourists will choose another place to go.

[-] Mirshe@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

A lot of places are finding workarounds in order to not deal with this and potentially open up serious legal avenues. I know my company is actively avoiding sending anyone here from anywhere else because of shit like this.

[-] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 1 points 4 months ago

We have special cell phones for travel to China and the US. However all travel to those hellholes has to be approved by the CEO and will only be approved of it is absolutely necessary for contract negotiations.

[-] AbsolutelyClawless@piefed.social 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

I wish my employer did that. Instead, people go freely back with their company issued phones and notebooks. 🙄 All the security we have as certification requirements is moot when we bring these devices back into our network like it's totally fine.

[-] CircaV@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

Another reason to never set foot in the fascist states of dumberikkka ever again!!

[-] Ziggurat@jlai.lu 2 points 4 months ago

I don't even remember all the reddit account I had in the previous 5 years

[-] Diplomjodler3@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Off to El Salvador with you!

[-] Eheran@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Why did you have more than 1?

[-] Iheartcheese@lemmy.world 2 points 4 months ago

Posting.

Porn.

Weird porn.

Furry porn.

Backing myself up in arguments.

[-] comrade_twisty@feddit.org 1 points 4 months ago

I basically made a new throw away account everytime I needed to post in some stupid support forum that only existed on reddit.

Unfortunately, many companies think reddit is a valid place for support forums these days. I try to avoid any such companies now.

[-] Tower@lemmy.zip 1 points 4 months ago

I'll take open and indexable Reddit support forums over walled off Discord servers any day.

[-] FreshParsnip@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

I don't know why anyone is still visiting the Untied States but I hope this deters them

[-] flightyhobler@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

I'll start creating and selling accounts.

[-] 9point6@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

And I suppose I'll continue my plan of staying the hell away until this administration is long gone

This feels pretty hard to enforce, are they gonna let people self select what they provide or are they perhaps going to give a list of services to give accounts for? The latter would have me looking either like a ghost that disappeared about 7 years ago (for most public social media) or one that disappeared about 3 years ago (if Reddit is included)

What happens to people who don't use social media at all? Are they going to be treated with suspicion?

[-] skisnow@lemmy.ca 2 points 4 months ago

until this administration is long gone

Based on past performance, the next Democrat administration will repeal maybe 50% of these changes at most.

[-] dual_sport_dork@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

We're probably going to find out eventually. For instance, I have never once in my life had any manner of account for any traditional social media. Just reddit (not anymore) and here. That's it.

So good luck with that, fuckers.

[-] DaddleDew@lemmy.world 1 points 4 months ago

Ha! I deleted my Facebook account more than 5 years ago.

Like I would ever want to visit the US under Trump to begin with.

[-] Mikina@programming.dev 1 points 4 months ago

If I'm not mistaken, people who said they don't have any are beeing held for questioning and interrogations, or maybe even denied access. I vaguely remember reading an article about this a while back, so it may not help you as much as you think.

They can (how long can they hold you based on suspicion alone?) and will cause you a lot of trouble if they don't like what you give them.
