For anyone not aware, this happens regularly, and has happened regularly for a long time. Recent events have made it seem more newsworthy, so mainstream press is reporting it like its a big fucking deal, but this kind of airspace testing has been standard Russian practice for a long time. Not saying it's a good thing, but it doesn't represent any kind of sudden escalation.

It tends to be tit-for-tat as well. British ships challenge Russian coastlines, American subs emerge inside areas of Russian control, French planes overfly Russian military bases...

All this gets reported in Russian media as provocative, which reinforces the rationale for further conflict with Western nations.

When these countries enter a state of detente, the maneuvers don't stop happening. State news agencies simply stop using the incidents to agitate for further conflicts
