I know they banned an anti-vaxxer who only joined to post misinformation. I’m fine with that. That’s not an unpopular opinion. That’s an attempt to harm others and that shouldn’t be tolerated. I don’t really care either way, I just blocked the user.
Bad science isn't an opinion.
Some “unpopular” opinions are blatant misinformation propaganda, or bad attempts to troll people. Mods absolutely should remove this trash.
It's the paradox of these subs. 50% of the posts reduce to "people think I'm an asshole but I dont agree with them." Another 40% are just agenda posting trolls.
The rare 10% or so which aren't just cringe misanthrope or barely disguised bigotry are uninteresting. "I don't think Steak is very good." Cool story. "Being a parent isn't impressive." Sure but who cares? That's why these subs are just destined to be dumb.
Depends. Was it right wing hatred posing as “controversy”? Thats usually what it is when someone is here whining loudly about it, in my experience.
So you're saying it was unpopular, but somehow not relevant to the sub?
In that case, whining is not an opinion.
Source?
Impossible to give one.

Removed Post Permanently Deleted
reason: this is technically against some rules
Very well-defined reason 🙄 and to be clear, this wasn't my post or anything. I was arguing against it until the entire post mysteriously disappeared
Can you tell us what it was
The OP thought furries are weird and appeal to pedophiles. Primary arguments were that they're often animation-based, which makes it for children (lol), but that furry culture is pretty hard-tied to yiff.
There were one or two fair points but it was mostly just ignorant/misguided points. I don't think that's in any way basis for removal, especially not in this comm.
Not having seen the OG post and going solely off what you've said, that post to me falls in the grey area of someone who is misguided but maybe could get various opinions in a post, and someone who is abusing a conversational platform to spread hate. I do think at least a minimal amount of review on the comments should be a part in deciding if a topic is inappropriate for the forum, but sometimes it doesn't matter and the topic doesn't belong in this community.
If someone came in and claimed that the Nazi party should be in power because all Jews are evil, that should be removed. There is no positive conversation that can come from that, and a user will just use it to talk hate speech. There's a line between bad unpopular opinion and hate speech, and usually the latter is what gets removed.
Unpopular Opinion
Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!
How voting works:
Vote the opposite of the norm.
If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.
Guidelines:
Tag your post, if possible (not required)
- If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
- If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].
Rules:
1. NO POLITICS
Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.
2. Be civil.
Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.
3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.
Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.
4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...
Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.
5. No trolling.
This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.
6. Defend your opinion
This is a bit of a mix of rules 4 and 5 to help foster higher quality posts. You are expected to defend your unpopular opinion in the post body. We don't expect a whole manifesto (please, no manifestos), but you should at least provide some details as to why you hold the position you do.
Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/
