This is a tired and oft-repeated adage at this point, but... all the elements of good desktop UI were basically figured out by 2010. Everything since then has been project managers trying to justify their own existence.

On the upside, Macs have become some of the best hardware to run Linux and emulators.

I always wondered why light mode became so painful to use and its cos CRTs and old LCD displays werent that bright so white was more of a grey. The problem with light mode now is every fekin display is 3 billion nits so it just scorches my eyes. The white in turn then needs to be more grey for it to be accurate to what ye olde computers looked like or at least let me tune the colour myself

I got fewer headaches at work when I switched over to using light mode, but also turned my monitor's brightness way down. It felt weird initially, but now it seems normal to me, and my co-worker's monitors seem kind of painfully bright to look at.

Probably what i should do but im lazy and monitor brightness controls are never nice to get to or adjust. Its the nit agenda

that's my feeling too. light mode allows the screen itself to be much darker and still have some contrast

This makes so much sense in retrospect. It wasn't until the last ten years my (admittedly very sensitive) eyes started bothering me while using a computer. I'm in dark mode, yellowed display, brightness all the way down, and it's like staring into the sun for me.

If you can turn the brightness of the screen down it's not so bad to use light mode sometimes.

My only use for light mode is when im programming in my garden in summer

i prefer light mode generally but i do run my monitors with the brightness waaaaaay down and the color temperature set to the yellowest

alex-aware about a decade ago I had a dev friend of mine say "I use OSX because I want Linux with professionally designed UI"
