So I am running linuxmint on my ASUS vivobook, suddenly my apps flicker between normal, maximized & Fullscreen.

It happened spontaneously, are anyone going through this same issue ?? Or am I alone in this ?

UPDATE: it is suddenly okay again, I better pray to the machine spirit.

Based on some quick research into this, the windows are likely jumping sizes because of something like a stuck key, a shortcut, the hot‑corner, the graphics driver, or the compositor being triggered unintentionally. I'd say you should first test for any stuck keys that could be the cause (IE: Super, Alt + F10/Space) with xev – multiple events = sticky key. Or you could just plug in an external keyboard and if it stops, the built‑in keyboard is at fault.

If stuck keys aren’t the issue, try turning off hot corners + window tiling in the settings, then restart the device. If it's still happening after this, checking that you’re using the correct graphics driver would be the move. You can run inxi -Gx to adjust the driver.

If none of this fixes the issue, peep the recent updates in /var/log/apt/history.log for any packages which were recently updated that could cause the problem. You could also make a fresh user account to see if the problem is system‑wide or confined to your config. Once you find and correct the trigger, the flickering and whatnot will stop, you just have to figure out what's causing it.

Reminds me of when I was getting pissed off that, on my work computer, Windows would randomly close Teams Windows and browser tabs, exactly every 59 seconds.

Till I found out that the windows version of caffeine hits the F15 key every 59 seconds by default. I had previously set up PowerToys to map an "extra" key on my keyboard to do Ctrl+W. That "extra" key actually turned out to be F15.

How about a fresh re-install ? BTW the problem occured suddenly, it was fine yesteday & I already use an external keyboard. So might be an built-in issue ?

When did you last update the OS?

Edit: Before doing a reinstall, I'd make a new user account to see if it's happening there first. Reinstalls are a last resort as there's no going back with it.

You mean apt update && apt upgrade -y ? Well day before yesterday.

Is your F11 key jammed or something?

Nope. I barely use it. Funny enough it does not happen with the file manager (yet)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
