Edit: Sigh.... I got the dystopia wrong. Apparently everyone is apathetic in 1984 of their own free will and just drink, smoke and do morphine.

Brave New World is apathy through euphoria through soma.
Which yeah, drugged euphoria is not happiness.

We gotta get you the good stuff.

There are definitely drugs that make you happy.

I’m afraid you’re confusing it with Brave New World

Yeah sorry, the drug in 1984 is apparently just morphine and drinking yourself to death.

Wild how they both are so dystopian but 1984 is just straight up political fiction with like no SciFi and my brain was trying to add more

Thought this too. Soma. No idea why ive remembered that so long, I never even finished BNW and put it down almost a decade ago

Yes this. And is a drug that makes you happy really science fiction? There are plenty that work on dopamine, serotonin and oxytocin receptors. Though I suppose happiness is something more nebulous and complex than a handful of chemicals.

Tf you mean?

Ecstacy exists for real.

Yeah and that's not even a joke.

I'm gonna use more pretentious words just to reiterate the values of this succinct and correct comment.

Serotonergic drugs, also sometimes known as empathogens or entactogens (enhancing empathy and tactile sensation) have been shown to honestly be able to take care of depression terminally ill people have, for up to months, with a single dose.

Ofc there should be therapists as well, it's not as simple as giving someone unfamiliar drugs telling them to eat them and that's it. No for the terminally ill for instance you'd want a therapist there to help work out the experience of the session.

But for anyone somewhat healthy and young and looking to experience something like that, just go to a rave. Can't tell you which though, as stimulants also have the people who use dopaminergic drugs and those don't exactly make one happy.

Or just read up on what mdma is how to use it safely and look up some artist you like from the EDM scene (so that itd be higher chances of other people rolling as well) and go.

Genuinely the happiest nights of my life some of them. Some not as much, went a bit beyond therapy. Lol.

Rumor has it that molly is typically laced with some nasty shit these days.

Read the fucking book

Please read the fucking book

[-] Krauerking@lemy.lol 1 points 2 months ago

I did. I just misremembered the plot and hoped everyone was so apathetic cause drugs.

Sorry to have failed you.

This mea culpa is not quite as filling as it should be. Need some deep face down arse up genuflexion.

Just kidding.

The fact you owned the mistake is enough.

Both books are excellent

A "Showerthought" is a simple term used to describe the thoughts that pop into your head while you're doing everyday things like taking a shower, driving, or just daydreaming. The most popular seem to be lighthearted clever little truths, hidden in daily life.

Here are some examples to inspire your own showerthoughts:

Rules

  1. All posts must be showerthoughts
  2. The entire showerthought must be in the title
  3. No politics
    • If your topic is in a grey area, please phrase it to emphasize the fascinating aspects, not the dramatic aspects. You can do this by avoiding overly politicized terms such as "capitalism" and "communism". If you must make comparisons, you can say something is different without saying something is better/worse.
    • A good place for politics is c/politicaldiscussion
  4. Posts must be original/unique
  5. Adhere to Lemmy's Code of Conduct and the TOS

If you made it this far, showerthoughts is accepting new mods. This community is generally tame so its not a lot of work, but having a few more mods would help reports get addressed a little sooner.

Whats it like to be a mod? Reports just show up as messages in your Lemmy inbox, and if a different mod has already addressed the report, the message goes away and you never worry about it.
