that's like saying apples and pears are the same thing because they're both fruits

[-] coolman@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

More like saying Fuji apples and pink lady apples are the same. They're not, but most people can't tell the difference

[-] 20cello@lemmy.world 3 points 4 days ago

Fruits that belong to the same family tho

[-] kali_fornication@lemmy.world 2 points 4 days ago

The klan has always been well represented in law enforcement.

But I imagine much switched to other non proscribed groups after the big scandal with the grand wizard bitey bitey sex raping that young woman in indiana or whatever that saw their peak influence dashed back in the day, after the coverup failed. What was it 1920s ish very generally they previously opened their others from blacks to leftists, unionists, socialists, jews, and the like, and had went on a national recruitment campaign that saw them explode in popularity. Until that scandal and some enterprising journalists made them persona non grata.

But they are an undercurrent, and the offshoot orgs that do not carry that stigma that follow the same strategies that I presume exist. They are in your local police forces too to a degree.

Not quite accurate to say they are the klan though. They are much more than one hate group. They are protecters of property and capital in an age of robber barons emerging, they are pursuing the scapegoats for the harms caused by those robber barons. And most of all, they are Nazis.

Nazis, are the worst.

Left-wing rage gave us Katyn. Let’s not pretend the issue isn’t assholes, and every group has assholes.

[-] NaibofTabr@infosec.pub 7 points 4 days ago

Also the Bolsheviks. And Maoists.

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 2 points 4 days ago

Fair, a 4-axis model (still extremely flawed) with authority/liberty would better fit here to differentiate the authleft from the rest of us.

[-] BossDj@piefed.social 8 points 5 days ago

Right wing tried to organize to fight for gun rights. But then black people armed themselves, so they backed off on that idea and have stuck with rage against the poor ever since

[-] blinfabian@feddit.nl 5 points 4 days ago

genuinly curious: has the right not done at least 1 good thing? they must've right?

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 6 points 4 days ago

Yeah, they've um uh, the thing that time, with the err stuff?

There were some right wing impulses in the abolition movement. Lots of people didn’t like slavery because it competed with free white labor and depressed wages.

[-] bstix@feddit.dk 1 points 4 days ago

That's a damn good question.

I'm not going to share my thoughts on it, but I will absolutely encourage everyone to think about it themselves.

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social -1 points 5 days ago

Well, great… kkk was founded by the southern democrats historically….

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 26 points 5 days ago

Well they're not leftists, so it tracks

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social -2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

They were at the time I assume…

Racism is not a left or right issue is all I’m saying.

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 14 points 5 days ago

The Democrats were anti-capitalist in 1870?

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 5 days ago

Was anyone? What is the the question or is it rhetorical I need to look it up actually myself I’m not some expert on kkk or post bellum civil war politics myself but I’m interested in it was just commenting

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 13 points 5 days ago

It's rhetorical, I'm trying to say at no point have the Dems ever been leftists. They are a more socially progressive right wing party.

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Ok fine lol … except Biden, he was fdr 2.0…. right? 👀

[-] Deceptichum@quokk.au 8 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

No.

And No for FDR.

[-] hector@lemmy.today 3 points 5 days ago

/s right? I hope so, seeing you all stroke off biden and obama is dispiriting. They failed. We need a new deal, not more whatever the fuck biden was.

[-] Alcoholicorn@mander.xyz 3 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yes, there were literally communists who fled Germany during 1848 and would join the union army.

Enough that a former revolutionary, Franz Sigle, was promoted to general, because German immigrants who'd also fled in 1848 looked up to the guy and were willing to join to serve under the guy.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

Was anyone?

Uh, yes? Maybe not a major US party, but yes of course.

No major party in the US has ever been leftist, and the historical Democrats being discussed here (the racist segregationists who invented the KKK) were the opposite of leftist.

[-] Rothe@piefed.social 2 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

You assume wrong. And it definitely is. You complete lack of knowledge of everything which you so confidently claim is quite impressive.

[-] Hideakikarate@sh.itjust.works 17 points 5 days ago

Well, great… kkk was founded by the southern democrats historically….

I love when people like to treat this like a "got ya" comment. Democrats IN NAME founded the KKK. Democrats of that time are more aligned with Republicans of today, and vice-versa. The KKK was founded in 1865.. The Democratic Party was founded in 1828 while the Republican Party dates back to 1854. By the 1980's, the party swap was all but complete.

[-] pressanykeynow@lemmy.world 3 points 5 days ago

Democrats IN NAME

Isn't it true for the US Democratic Party of today? I mean they surely don't have much democracy within their party and they are definitely not "left" in general.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 4 points 4 days ago

It's not comparable at all. Democrats were literally the party of slavery. Then Roosevelt came along with The New Deal, pushing them to the left. Then the civil rights movement began, and the "Dixiecrats" (racist southern Democrats) had enough and left the party over it.

Racist, anti-integrationist Dixiecrats like Strom Thurmond remained hardcore Republicans until the day they died.

The "Democrats" that created the KKK are the basis for the modern Republican party.

[-] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 4 days ago

Not meant to be a gotcha, just what happened historically….

Kind of relevant to today in many ways… the Dems will most definitely switch sides instead of passing any kind of progressive legislation..

We have a uni-party

[-] GrabtharsHammer@lemmy.world 7 points 4 days ago

Computers were people who did arithmetic when it was needed. It does not follow that your laptop is a little foldy person.

[-] prole@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 4 days ago

kkk was founded by the southern democrats historically

🙄

[-] TrickDacy@lemmy.world 1 points 4 days ago
[-] DancingBear@midwest.social 1 points 4 days ago

And now we have a uniparty

[-] Hexarei@beehaw.org 0 points 4 days ago

The parties basically swapped roles though, they were founded by the people that today would be the Republican party based on platform and beliefs
