And some people on Lemmy were worried that the cold would keep Minnesotans indoors lol their fears were clearly unfounded

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 18 points 2 months ago

Per Midwest culture, rain is the weather that keeps the most people indoors.

[-] mercano@lemmy.world 11 points 2 months ago

I went to college in Ohio. I much preferred 30° and precipitating to 35° and precipitating, especially as a pedestrian walking to classes. Snow you can brush off before you go in, a cold rain just soaks in.

[-] Semi_Hemi_Demigod@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Cold and dry is uncomfortable. Cold and wet is dead.

[-] dumples@piefed.social 2 points 2 months ago

So such things as too cold. You just aren't wearing enough layers.

[-] WanderWisley@lemmy.world 19 points 2 months ago

If Minneapolis can do this in below zero temperatures then we all can.

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 17 points 2 months ago

I initially thought: Yes!

Then: Oh, it must be Saturday for this to be happening at all.

I checked the date. It’s not Saturday. In addition the weather is awful.

I came back around to: Yes!

Do protests need to be sustained to be effective? Of course. Widespread? Absolutely. Regardless, the standard guardrails on protest comfort we’ve witnessed thus far are broken here, in a good way. Cascade effects may follow.

The problem is if it remains local to one city, that’s easy peasy for authorities to squelch.

[-] peopleproblems@lemmy.world 15 points 2 months ago

A lot of people underestimate just how fucking cold it was today.

It's really fucking cold.

[-] elevenbones@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 months ago

Im a local and I walked to work at 10am and it was -20, only a few blocks luckily

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

As a California can we trade weather? -20 sounds so much nicer than 50 something.

[-] EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 16 points 2 months ago

"But why don't Americans protest? All they do is sit back and take it up the ass!" I hear every European crying as they ignore this right alongside all the other protests.

[-] ScoffingLizard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 7 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I love how it's a bajillion degrees below zero and they are all outside protesting, flipping shit. Yeah, Americans don't do anything. Fuck y'all that say it.

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

We have a significant population of people who think vaccines are bad. You think they'll do anything for society?

[-] teolan@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Because just standing outside is not how a protest achieves anything. True protests must be disruptive and last. The Yellow jackets burned down the avenue des champs Elysées every Saturday for multiple months. The protests following Nahel's murder (very similar to that of Renee good in some aspects) burned down multiple police stations.

Standing protests like this a regular occurrence in France, but those are not the ones you hear about. Their only role is so build momentum and make people feel united.

Real change happens only through either much stronger protests or through actions like the whistles and following ice around making them feel unwelcome 24/7.

[-] chaitae3@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

It was true when I said it and I'm proud of everyone for what they've achieved since then.

[-] EldritchFeminity@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago

The protests last year were some of the largest in US history. There have been smaller protests popping up constantly since the first few months of the regime.

And this is going on during a (one day) state wide general strike in Minnesota

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

"Delicious protests. Finally, some good fucking"

[-] azdle@news.idlestate.org 11 points 2 months ago

Heh, I can actually pick myself out in that picture.

And just to confirm, yes, it was really fucking cold out.

[-] Bonesince1997@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

[-] Gammelfisch@lemmy.world 5 points 2 months ago

After watching the latest shooting video. FUCK ICE, they are trigger happy lunatics.

[-] abbiistabbii@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 2 months ago

That's why they're in Minneapolis, they want to shoot people and they want to trigger riots so Trump can bring in the big guns as it were.

[-] altphoto@lemmy.today 2 points 2 months ago

I think they were all shouting booerns! Right?

Nah!

[-] Typhoon@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 months ago

This is amazing but the protests need to be sustained until things change. Nothing will change if you set a date for when the protests end.

[-] usernamesAreTricky@lemmy.ml 17 points 2 months ago

Protests in Minnesota have been going on constantly every day in multiple places, the media is just hardly reporting on it. They are not small either. People have also formed entire network to monitor ICE and make sure that people can respond fast anywhere they go

[-] meh@piefed.blahaj.zone 7 points 2 months ago

this right here. every news source is refering to that crowd as "thousands". most protests dont even get a mention in local papers.

[-] Zephorah@discuss.online 4 points 2 months ago

The problem here, as in local to Minnesota, is it’s too local. It’s easy for authorities to gather enough resources for 1 city.

But Minnesotans are likely the only population that’s been brought to the breaking point just yet. (Trump spite for Walz, probably.)

[-] meh@piefed.blahaj.zone 6 points 2 months ago

im sure most of whats happening here isnt getting past the geofencing and content mods in regular social media. but they have not had enough resources to control even individual neighborhoods. even after bringing in more agents than the entire combined police force of the most populated metro area in the state. every increase in violance by ice drives more volunteers into community patrols. the administration cant subdue one medium sized midwestern city. they're weak and its showing.

[-] SocialMediaRefugee@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Trump has some obsession with Minnesota.

[-] Vile_port_aloo@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

This is how change is created, hope it continues and they get the results humanity needs.

[-] PlushySD@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I'm not an American, watched Dare Devil Born Again last year and thought wow that police task force the King Pin set up was bad... Didn't think you guys would face the real thing in the US. This is dystopian come true. Well, FUCK ICE from across the globe.
