When million dollar AI companies pirate everything in the world

Silence

When one single person pirates something

Jail time

Billion dollar. And they're not making a single penny of profit to boot (not that it's good either way), and destroying the planet for 0 reason.

This makes me so pissed

Copyright laws are stupid. Copyright should expire the same way patents expire, after 10 years.

[-] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml 30 points 2 days ago

Copyright should not exist. You cant fence ideas. This bs only serves capitalists

[-] 4am@lemmy.zip 42 points 2 days ago

I think some form needs to exist, even under communism; or else how would you earn for your labor without someone else taking your work and exploiting it?

I agree it should be like 10 years though, and infringement shouldn’t be some wild number, takedowns 100% should not be “shoot first ask questions later”, etc

[-] Petter1@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 3 hours ago

I imagine communism as a system where we have a central free open knowledge base. Everything, every idea is there, so if you add yours it is you who added it and nobody can say they were it

I imagine it as a mix of git and science papers, I imagine a reputation based system of trust, changes are logged and there is always a documentation on what was changed and why

On the same system, you could as well do voting and stuff

The clue to this setup is, that there is no entity controlling it, but all of that is built upon “smart-contracts” stored (or at least the hashes of the changes) on a ledger, every person alive has their unique wallet/ID (like a birth certificate), so you can setup voting without an entity that is able to abuse it’s power

You could setup all laws like this

And to the argument that nobody would work, if they could not earn more than others doing nothing: no human ever does nothing, we are bored of nothing, we would get creative and innovative (as you see with FOSS stuff for example)

It would be a beautiful world where people would take time to create unbelievable art and others would invent mind blowing tech just for good representation and cheering of the community

After all, people want to be admired, and this is just as effective as money to motivate. You see that in the SCENE, but on many more levels as well

It only breaks if people are forced to screw others over in order to get food and sleep, in order to survive.

[-] Spectrism@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Communism means a moneyless society. There is no "earning for your labor" anymore and in turn no real loss for the artist that prevents them from having access to basic necessities, nor any real incentive for others to illegally copy someone's work in the first place. So no, communism doesn't really need any kind of copyright. Making it mandatory to credit the original artist could be mandatory, but that's about it.

Though I do agree with your second paragraph for the time being, where money earned through labor is required to survive.

Noo no, if ppl dont retire off working once, how will you sell ppl the fantasy of easy retirement off one lucky opportunity

[-] huquad@lemmy.ml 14 points 2 days ago

What's to keep Disney from poaching everyone's ideas? IP protection isn't a bad thing in itself. IP protection in perpetuity is the problem. 10-20 years seems fair.

[-] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml 4 points 2 days ago

Ideas are not products of individuals, but of societies. Artists and intellectuals need copyright nowdays because those jobs usually lead you to starvation under capitalism (no, i dont consider academics as a good example of intellectuals). And history is full of irony, because it will probably be capitalism that will take copyright down because its an obstacle to developing AI

[-] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 3 points 2 days ago

You cant fence ideas.

Yeah, you can't fence ideas using copyright, that's what patents are for.

As someone with a bookshelf dedicated to manga, there isn't a universe where I pay for seeing manga digitally.

Sell me physical stuff, then it's a fair deal.

Punitive damages: up to 5x losses

So zero?

[-] goferking0@lemmy.sdf.org 22 points 1 day ago

Except in media studio math that means infinity

[-] mexicancartel@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 1 day ago

"Five times zero is undefined, hence it is infinite"

Don't get too surprised. Look what happens in Italy or Spain with soccer. Same idiot stuff that only targets the less tech-savvy.

This will only improve the sailing abilities of those who love the high seas.

I don't use Discord and that's the only other place these scanlation groups use outside of their sites. If the sites go down, it will legitimately be hard to access the content.

[-] TWeaK@lemmy.today 13 points 2 days ago

If it's similar to the football streaming then primarily they'll be targeting those selling pirated material.

[-] NostraDavid@programming.dev 2 points 1 day ago

Note: if we throw out copyright, it's OK for LLM companies to just steal any and all data under the sun. Example: Anthropic buys books, and just digitizes them, then uses that data to train their LLMs

It's a nasty side effect.

On the other hand: No company can claim anything you've generated from their LLMs.

[-] GilloutineBreast@lemmy.ml 1 points 7 hours ago

Let's be real it's already okay for LLM companies steal anything and everything, they just don't say it out loud. A bunch of them were proven to have pirated, but suffered no consequences then, probably won't in the future.

But we currently have copyright laws and AI companies stole everything ANYWAY and NOTHING HAPPENED. Don't you see that copyright is just a tool from big capital to stop true innovation and creative freedom?

There is copyright for everything and artists still struggle today. Copyright is just another tool to make companies OWN their workers work.

Abolish copyright and see artists flourish. See your local artist create custom art for your favourite movie without getting crushed if they get famous. See movies getting made by truly creative minds funded by YOU and not studios that want to sell toys and phones. Have they lost the ability to become billionaires from a hit? Should we feel sorry for that? NO ONE should own so much.

I know, it's hard to bring nuance to this. The current copyright system is completely fucked. I think we still need some sort of copyright, but one that expires after like 10 years after first publication. I would actually be fine with everything being used to train AI models, if AI wouldn't require ungodly amounts of resources and the companies wouldn't be owned by tech bro assholes. If it would belong to us all, be free to use and not burn down our world even quicker, AI would be fine.

You need a Google, Apple or Facebook account to sign up for Manta. Even if you want to pay, it'll cost you more than money.

[-] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 4 points 2 days ago

Wait what, they don't run their own accounts?

[-] Skaudottir@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

I used Manta with the android app and deleted my account, hoping to make a new account not connected to Google and pay that way. But I couldn't log in with anything other than Google, Apple or Facebook. Figured it was an app thing and opened Manta in a browser. However the same thing showed up when I wanted to sign up. So if you ever find a way, let me know.

[-] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 8 points 2 days ago

I've never heard of the site until now. But indeed, there is no such "Register new account" page, it all goes to the stupid "Sign in with the Big 3" modal. What a fucking joke.

It doesn't help that I learned this site operates on a "gem" economy, and I just do not fucking understand why commercial manga sites do this. Steam charges you cash for games, Amazon and Netflix charge cash for movies and series, even the Google Play Store just uses USD (or whatever local currency). Why do manga sites operate like a fucking pachinko parlor?

[-] Skaudottir@piefed.social 5 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

Yeah, it didn't do that years ago. You do get some series, if you just sign up for the base subscription. I don't know if these are made with the site and the rest are licensed, which is why you need to pay extra to read them?
But the enshittification is real. People lose the sense of how mu h money they spend, when you have to buy tokens to pay. And you can never buy the correct amount, so you end up having to pay more for enough tokens to get what you want.
It's shit and I just took this as a sign, to not participate anymore. I won't be sailing the seas, but I absolutely get the people who do.

Edit for grammar

[-] HarkMahlberg@kbin.earth 2 points 2 days ago

Well you said it best, "it costs more than money."

[-] Fokeu@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I'm not reading their shit anyways but I have a feeling that this might backfire soon.

[-] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml -1 points 2 days ago

And people wonder why their birthrate is plummeting

[-] zaphod@sopuli.xyz 21 points 2 days ago

I think that's more because they work themselves to death, not because they're not allowed to pirate manhwa.

[-] FreudianCafe@lemmy.ml -2 points 2 days ago

I think people nowdays are unable to understand sarcasm anymore

[-] Throbbing_banjo@lemmy.dbzer0.com -1 points 2 days ago
[-] hexagonwin@lemmy.today 12 points 2 days ago

it's obviously a typo of 'their' lol

[-] themachinestops@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

I copied this from piracy subreddit didn't notice the typo. I changed it to a better title.
