As a Canadian I'd like to see a 5 year term so we don't spend the people's money on a whim, just because the time feels right. At any rate, we need election reform in Canada.
At the very least, the party in power should not be able to decide the timing of elections.
Ontario's last election was a farce. Opposition parties had no time to prepare, while Ford capitalized on being able to get all the media attention he wanted with his little trump act. Not democratic at all.
Didn't carney recently say that an election would not be instigated by the liberals? Some chats with a conservative premier changed his mind, the same premier who's early "emergency" election was not justified and followed suspiciously close to a new, also unjustified, tax payout?
Who said his mind changed? This "news" is just Ford advising Carney he should do something.
Just seems odd to even mention they discussed it. Its comes off as either ford bragging about a power grab or carney considering an election.
That makes it an excellent reason for news to run with it. So many potential clicks!!
Something about taking advice from a guy who took three years to finish grade 7 seems like a bad idea.
The Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi just pulled the same move and benifited. It's an anti democratic move but the safe money would be on it working. PP is still a threat Carney can scare people from Green or NDP and I'm sure many Conservative votes were won over by Carney classic Conservativeness.
There's nothing anti-democratic about a minority government calling an early election - that's a feature of parliamentary democracy, not a bug.
Conservative votes were won over because PP started leaning too heavily into Trump ideas and tactics.
