As a history teacher, I've met a few who would definitely beg to differ. They're mostly deluded armchair cosplayers or still licking boots from their time in the military.

If you study history intently and don't come to the conclusion that we must continually topple oppressors and promote communal welfare and accountability, you're doing it wrong.

[-] notwhoyouthink@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 weeks ago

Thank you for all that you do, seriously.

[-] iltoroargento@lemmy.sdf.org 6 points 3 weeks ago

Much appreciated, here, friend. I have tried other jobs/careers and, honestly, I couldn't see myself anywhere else (at least for a while). Definitely a labor of love.

I worked in the south (professor) for quite a while. There are a decent number of historians who I've met who went into the profession carrying the all of their southern baggage into things to eventually come out hard against the same principles later in their careers.

He's a perfect example of someone who is really into history for the wrong reasons. History should not be glorified, it should be used to reflect what is happening in the present.

[-] django@discuss.tchncs.de 9 points 3 weeks ago

But what if I was the fuhrer?

[-] Fierro@piefed.social 9 points 3 weeks ago

That's how the Caesar in fallout new vegas came to be, isn't it? He was the only one who cared about history and understood the basic concept that history tends to repeat itself so he filled the role before anyone else could.

[-] PugJesus@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, but Edward Sallow deserves that INT 4 in his SPECIAL score.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 3 points 3 weeks ago

The mole rat at Quarry Junction has a higher INT score BTW.

[-] unexposedhazard@discuss.tchncs.de 7 points 3 weeks ago

Well he doesnt teach history, he teaches fantasy.

Eh, not necessarily. Here in the States, "conservative History teacher who's only there because he wants to be a football coach" is a very particular genre of guy. Bonus points if he's a military history nerd

[-] HeyThisIsntTheYMCA@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

our entry into the genre was an english teacher that we had to learn how to push around as freshmen.

[-] SkunkWorkz@lemmy.world 14 points 3 weeks ago

Are they? The current secretary general of NATO is a history teacher and he was also the leader of the Dutch right wing liberal party. He was the prime minister of the Netherlands for 14 years and pushed the country full libtard.

[-] coredev@programming.dev 6 points 3 weeks ago

He would probably be counted as left in the us tho

[-] PugJesus@piefed.social 4 points 3 weeks ago

Some people just want to watch the world burn

[-] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Remember that most Americans don't use the word Liberal like we do - we mean liberal in terms of selling everything off to corporations that will rob us blind while they man liberal as in socially liberal.

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 4 points 3 weeks ago

Which as an aside goes back to the 1800s more specifically Southern slavers using the term liberal as short hand for basically everyone who wasn't a slaver. This is a rather old dialect difference between American English and British English.

Also as an aside, John Brown did nothing wrong and Sherman didn't go far enough.

[-] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

That was indeed an interesting aside, thanks!

The classic socially liberal (Voltaire and shit) and the corpo lib aren’t always mutually exclusive. Like a lib can be for gay rights and for laissez-faire free markets. It not every social liberal is a progressive. Like many social libs are pro gay rights because the progressives fought for those rights and made that socially acceptable to be for gay rights. But Trans rights is for them a step too far. So those libs are still right of center.

[-] RecursiveParadox@lemmy.world 1 points 3 weeks ago

While such a state does occur in practice for a period of time, your last sentence shows where it inevitably ends up.

[-] explodicle@sh.itjust.works 11 points 3 weeks ago

I didn't put the pieces together until years later, but my 7th grade history teacher was literally a fascist who endorsed eugenics. Not disagreeing with your general point though.

[-] vacuumflower@lemmy.sdf.org 3 points 3 weeks ago

I was lucky (in Russia) to have geography and biology teachers who loved history. While the history teacher was good at organizing play disputes, but what they were telling of history was entertaining, but had not much to do with history, mostly like telling anecdotes.

Still, I thought those play disputes were stupid, but they taught me something about democracy and economics. Which is why I'm still ancap. I have seen socialism in a nutshell in those play disputes. It's different from arguing in the interwebs, far more enlightening. I might agree with many popular opinions on many things, but I'm still ancap.

I'd say mine were staunchly conservative. Not empire lovers, but very happy to be on the winning side and finding the battles themselves more interesting than the issues leading up to them and happy to swallow whatever convenient excuse aligns with their upbringing ("the communists were killing the intellectuals" (sometimes true) or "the communists were too divided to lead" (often true), etc.)

[-] vaultdweller013@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 weeks ago

Gonna guess that you are Spannish? Of at least that is my guess, maybe Portuguese but I don't know anything about Portugal after Napoleon outside of Salazar being a pseudo fascist.

[-] tetris11@feddit.uk 2 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

UK education, but yeah likely referencing some of battles somewhere in the mediterranean

[-] tatterdemalion@programming.dev 7 points 3 weeks ago

I have some childhood trauma from a right wing history teacher.

[-] Etzello@midwest.social 1 points 3 weeks ago

What happened?

[-] HuntressHimbo@lemmy.zip 4 points 3 weeks ago

I was lucky enough to get Zinn as required reading when I was still a weird conservative child. History teachers can be great

[-] Formfiller@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago* (last edited 3 weeks ago)

I had an American history teacher in jr college that taught the civil war was about states rights and we had to buy his crappy right wing history book for class. It was entertaining but it was a bullshit class. I guess I’m lucky that my executive functioning disorder allows me to critically think hard AF. Got my transfer credit

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 3 points 3 weeks ago

Yeah, I have a history degree. That combined with good Critical Thinking Skills, and you end up standing in the middle of humanity screaming "WHY AREN'T YOU PEOPLE FREAKING OUT ABOUT THIS? THEY TAUGHT US ABOUT THIS IN SCHOOL! DON'T YOU REMEMBER WHAT THIS LEADS TO?"

It's very frustrating.

[-] daannii@lemmy.world 3 points 3 weeks ago

Seems to be high school level are conservative and college professors are progressive.

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 4 points 3 weeks ago

As the meme says, the college professors studied history.

[-] CaptPretentious@lemmy.world 2 points 3 weeks ago

American k-12 has been basically daycare for a long time. With various activities labeled as education. Not the faults of the teachers.
