God damnit, Stop. America, especially under its current leadership, is not an ally. Stop enabling them, they won't remember our help.

[-] shads@lemy.lol 11 points 1 week ago

Pfft after all the AUKUS nonsense, you think we are backing down from the brink of jumping in the crazy bus with the US? That's optimistic of you. We are going to ride this bomb all the way into the ground.

I haven't even heard the usual suspects bleating about how many Australians will be losing their homes when interest rates spike because evangelicals in the US can't get it up unless they are killing Arabs.

But the oil must flow...

Can you imagine if the only one who can drive are transport workers, miners, farmers and EV drivers?

Those fuckin’ kiwis aren’t going to know what hit ‘em!

What if the close the cook strait?

[-] LemmyTryThisAgain@lemmy.world 17 points 1 week ago

Seriously Albo and his whole party have shown they are no different than the ones they call out

[-] fizzle@quokk.au 6 points 1 week ago

I agree. I doubt I'll vote for Albo again. They've moved to the right, trying to be the eternal party of government.

[-] Fleur_@aussie.zone 12 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Please for the love of god never give either of the majors your first preference. You get to rank all the parties don't waste 90% of your ballet by just defaulting to the most popular ones

[-] fizzle@quokk.au 1 points 1 week ago

In the past centre left has been my first preference.

Im not really a greens voter.

[-] eureka@aussie.zone 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

A reminder to all: there's far more to the ballot than who's on television! IIRC Greens were only 4th or so on my senate ballot, Labor were almost at 10th.

While I have plenty of pragmatic criticisms of The Greens, I can't abide by what Labor has done to unions and other parts of the labour movement, not to mention the frequent other betrayals which enabled this crisis and the resulting PHON populist campaign to be so potent.

[-] Fleur_@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

You're still wasting your preferences by voting Labor first. Labor or liberal are essentially guaranteed to be in the last 2 preferences for almost every seat in the country. You can put them 2nd to last and they'll still count your vote towards them in preference flows.

[-] king_comrade@lemmy.world 0 points 1 week ago

Why's that, mate?

[-] shirro@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

This government is being nitpicked to death from all sides while desperately clinging to the center of politics and trying not to present a target. The real war isn't Iran but the ceaseless information war cooking peoples brains.

The official word from the government is that we are considering offering assistance to gulf countries but have ruled out deployment in Iran. Has that changed? When it does I will be out on the streets with half a million others.

[-] makingStuffForFun@lemmy.ml 13 points 1 week ago

So our soldiers will head off, and die, to divert attention from the pedo president.

Sickening

The Nightly

Fuck oligarch run, funded, and owned newsmedia. This outlet is a wolf in sheeps clothing.

[-] maniacalmanicmania@aussie.zone 2 points 1 week ago

As in this is a right wing hit job on Labor and nothing more?

Not really, the problem i have is the ownership and what that certainly means. It could be a left leaning article in this case.

But The Nightly is a publication with the obvious purpose to make an impression on and guide the discourse of the millenial and younger generations. This i expect is because their traditional mastheads and their distribution channels aren't gaining great traction with these generations, and the expected conservative movement coming with age hasn't occurred.

[-] Fleur_@aussie.zone 6 points 1 week ago

Fuck this shit

[-] ProfThadBach@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Please don't do this. Be better than us.

[-] Embargo@lemmy.zip 6 points 1 week ago

The Labor government are cowards. They will absolutely march Australians into another illegal conflict even if it's just in order to appease the U.S.

[-] fizzle@quokk.au 7 points 1 week ago

You're right, but the Liberals and Nationals are further up the Yanks ass than Labor - let's not pretend it's a Labor problem.

[-] Embargo@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 week ago

Oh, I would never even suggest such a thing. Australia don't live in a two party hellscape like the US so there's that... I guess.

[-] king_comrade@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Two political groups dominate the Australian political spectrum, forming a de facto two-party system. Only the ALP or LNP have ever held power. In addition, they're near identical in belief leaving little choice for voters.

[-] NigelFrobisher@aussie.zone 3 points 1 week ago

You want us to be better than us?

[-] Geobloke@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Look, the USA broke the strait of Hormuz. We didn't ask for that too happen, but the glass is all over the floor (to stretch a metaphor) and now the more sober people at the party need to clean up the mess

[-] LogicalFallacy@lemmy.zip 1 points 6 days ago

Holy shit. So you support AUS going to war for the USA? Again!? Fucking whipped is what you are.

[-] grue@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Not sure "clean[ing] up the mess" means helping the US, though (I say as an American).

[-] fizzle@quokk.au 5 points 1 week ago

This is old news already.

Wong already acknowledged that we have been asked to defend neighboring countries.

She did not disclose which but likely UAE.

It's only sensible to prep armed forces for that, even if they haven't given their final approval yet.

[-] AllNewTypeFace@leminal.space 2 points 1 week ago

If Trump called for a Vietnam-scale deployment, how long would it take Australia to bring in the draft and train new conscripts to readiness?

[-] fizzle@quokk.au 3 points 1 week ago

I don't think there's really any appetite for that.

In the case of vietnam there was at least a perceived threat in the way of the spread of communism through our "back yard". Australian soldiers, at least when they shipped out, believed they were protecting their loved ones.

short of a dirty bomb on Australian soil, I just can't see how anyone would support a draft.

[-] arbilp3@aussie.zone 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

We have US operations and facilities in the Northern Territory. If Iranian intelligence showed that these were being used to aid the American assault on Iran in any way, they'd have every right to destroy them. We could be a legitimate target. If during the early days of this despicable war we're already thinking of aiding Arab gulf states ruled by dictator families put there by the US, we are already active in this conflict, not just there for defensive purposes (according to the lame explanation we are being given by our government).

I believe many Australians would not support a draft but others would, PLUS we would be blasted by war propaganda (which we already are). I'd like to see all those older men who are so pro-war go and enlist and leave our young people alone.
