A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is of an Iranian soldier exulting in the launch of a ballistic missile aimed towards the imperialists.

short summary this week: US doing pretty bad and Iran doing pretty good all things considered, Strait of Hormuz is closed and will almost certainly remain so until the end of the war, Trump has no idea what to do, global economic crisis from strait closure is basically guaranteed at this point but who will ultimately benefit most and who will ultimately lose most is still up in the air.

longish summary is below in the spoiler tags

longish summary

While there are still major debates raging about how badly things are actually going right now and what the post-conflict map may look like, as we blaze past the two week mark on this conflict, it's becoming ever more obvious to almost everybody involved that this war is not going according to plan, if there ever was one. US airstrikes are, from what I can best determine, still mostly done with relatively less powerful (but still very dangerous!) and much less plentiful standoff munitions launched from bombers, though certain border and coastal areas are being struck with more powerful and more plentiful short-range guided bombs. This indicates that Iranian air defense is still sufficiently functional throughout most of Iran that the kinds of true carpet bombing done against Korea and Vietnam in the past (and Gaza very recently) is still too risky, though their airspace is still very much under assault, as we appear to have images of small groups of Western fighters breaching relatively deep into the country. Under some kind of Iranian pressure (drones? missiles? speedboats?) one aircraft carrier has retreated to a thousand kilometers from Iran, hiding behind the mountains of Oman; the other is sitting in the Red Sea, rather pointedly out of range of Yemen. As such, the ranges that Western aircraft must travel to bombard Iran is increasing, which reduces their frequency and increases strain on maintenance and logistics in the medium and long term.

While there is tons to say about the current social, economic, and military state of Iran, I don't think I have a reliable enough picture to give a good summary beyond "they aren't close to defeat or regime change". What has instead captured much of the world's attention is the continuing blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, which has inspired some of the most delusional statements I have seen so far in my life, which is sincerely a profound achievement. For those out of the loop: the strait is currently closed to all shipping except those going to very particular countries (I've seen China and Bangladesh mentioned, and apparently India is in the process of working something out and may succeed or fail). This is because most ships are not risking the trip due to the ~20 tankers and container ships that Iran has already struck and disabled in the strait and in the Persian Gulf. Additionally, the threat from Iran's military to Navy ships is such that attempting to create a convoy to guide tankers through it is suicidal to both the Navy and merchant ships. Right now it cannot be done, and it very well might be the case that it could never be done, simply due to the combination of Iran's naval forces (hundreds, perhaps thousands, of armed, specialized speedboats designed for exactly this purpose), their drones (in the tens of thousands), their torpedoes, and if all else fails, their naval mines.

The Western reaction to this has been so moronic that it has almost integer underflowed into being philosophical: what does it truly mean for a passage to be "closed"? Has Iran truly "closed" the strait, or is the risk of traversing it simply too high for these cowardly sailors (who, for some strange reason, seem to care about their "lives" and "families")? How is it possible for Iran to have closed the strait if, according to the West, Iran's military has been totally obliterated? All these questions and more plague the minds of those who cannot accept the now-proven fact that there are indeed military forces on this planet that the US Navy with all its aircraft carriers and destroyers and submarines cannot defeat; and one of those minds is, rather hilariously, Trump himself. His thrice-daily positive affirmations that Iran has been defeated are taking on an increasingly deranged and almost pitiable tone; the lamentations of a man who has finally found a situation where him merely stating that something is true is insufficient to change the situation one iota. Despite stating that some kind of naval compact or alliance is being established to protect shipping, every Western country so far - from the UK, to France, to Japan, to Australia - has publicly stated that they will not risk their ships to do so. All this as the continued blockade yet further guarantees a worldwide energy, production, transportation, and food crisis that will have major global ramifications for at least the rest of the decade and almost certainly beyond.

If the anti-imperialists play their cards right, the US could lose much from this crisis, and others, like China and Russia, could gain a great deal. To quote Nia Frome (co-founder of Red Sails): "An effective Marxist has to be enough of an accelerationist/pervert to treat the obviously bad things that are going to happen as the political opportunities they are."

This is not exactly News but whatever, I feel like this bizarre sense of both glee and horror that the entire Global North is realizing the shit we've been talking about here for fucking ever about the US military being a paper tiger and unable to sustain any kind of long term war with an even remotely close near peer power, has no industrial capacity to build things en masse and a massive resource reliance on China, has a class of leaders that is functionally incapable of realpolitik, planning, or understanding of material reality, that missile defense is only so effective and eventually you run out and missiles land hits, and that air power can cause mass death and suffering but cannot win wars against an enemy committed to taking hits. It's Cassandra's Curse exploding all at once or something, truly insane times we live in. Having mainstream publications like the Economist writing shit that's basically like "bruv America's got no missiles left and can't make any more" is a fever dream. Like read this:

Mr Vance and others in Mr Trump’s orbit came to office arguing that America had wasted blood and treasure in the post-2001 wars in the Middle East, that the armed forces were woefully over-extended and that America ought to husband its resources in preparation for any future conflict with China. Instead the war in Iran is cannibalising forces in Asia—a marine expeditionary unit has been diverted from Japan and parts of a THAAD system from South Korea—while eroding the readiness of units that might be needed there in the years to come. “There is no sugar-coating this situation,” argues Tom Karako, also of CSIS. “The scale of recent munition expenditures and the degradation of US missile-defence capability may well undercut deterrence in the Pacific for the remainder of this decade.” (per https://archive.is/9QbGK#selection-1555.0-1567.107)

In celebration of this odd mood I wish all of here and the people of Iran a happy Nowruz; here's this Nowruz song I saw in concert once that randomly gets stuck in my head: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GmZu4tbV13Q

Based on the footage we've seen so far, Islamic Resistance in Iraq's FPV drone operators are like 2 year olds in comparison to the skill level of Russian and Ukrainian drone pilots. And yet they've systematically destroyed the defenses of the largest and best protected US embassy in the world in the span of three days. A small preview of the future.

I'm fully confident in Iran's ability to get a drone academy spun up like Russia and Ukraine have done if this conflict continues. The skill floor will rise rapidly as these groups gain experience. The Russians are training tens of thousands of drone pilots a year. They have experts to spare.

I had a $600,000 over 5 years NSF Physics grant terminated last year because our grant mentioned "polarization" which was included in the banned terms list. We were discussing the polarization of light. We never got the grant reinstated.

Colleague had one terminated bc it studied ecosystem diversity, as in plants? 🤦‍♂️

DOGE bros relied on keyword searches to terminate grants and federal jobs, without human research/thought. Similarly, AI without meaningful human oversight will, without doubt, not always produce good results. Regulations and limits are necessary.

Enemy fighter jet operations over central Iran reduce sharply after F-35 strike

ArticleIranian air defense systems have successfully reduced military aggression by American and Israeli fighter jets in the central regions of the country after the F-35 aircraft was struck, a highly-placed intelligence source told Press TV.

According to the source, Iran's advanced and integrated air defense network has inflicted multiple blows against enemy invading aircraft, forcing a decrease in the tempo of operations over central Iran.

"The multiple strikes by Iran's integrated air defense system against American and Israeli invading aircraft have led to a significant reduction in military operations by American and Israeli fighter jets in the central regions of the country," the source said.

The source further noted that the enemy had focused on harassment and terrorist actions in central Iran but has so far failed to achieve its objectives.

"After striking the F-35, the pace of military operations has decreased, although aircraft and drones are still being used for reconnaissance purposes," he added.

The intelligence source also revealed that the number of downed drones has reached nearly 200. Citing defensive innovations deployed against enemy aircraft, he said the rate of strikes against enemy warplanes is likely to increase in the coming days.

"Given the defensive innovations against enemy aircraft, it appears that in the coming days, the rate of strikes against enemy warplanes will increase," the source said.

On March 19, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) aerospace division struck the crown jewel of the US Air Force – the F-35 Lightning II stealth fighter – irrevocably reshaping the strategic calculus of the ongoing US-Israeli aggression, as per experts.

For nearly two decades, the F-35 program stood as the pinnacle of American military dominance – a multi-trillion-dollar, fifth-generation platform designed to pierce the world's most advanced air defenses with total impunity.

That myth was shattered over the skies of central Iran, where the IRGC deployed the domestically built air defense system to expose vulnerabilities of the F-35 aircraft.

As the aggression enters its fourth week, Iran's integrated air defense network has not only endured the heaviest aerial bombardment but has systematically dismantled the technological arrogance of the US-Israeli war machine.

You radical tankies love to paint pictures of economic doom and gloom - and yeah okay, 20% of oil and gas production might be gone for years, and it will hit the less fortunate the hardest.

But there is a sort of bright side - and I haven't seen this mentioned anywhere so far - which is, global CO2 emissions are almost guaranteed to go down his year (because of shortages) and will also almost certainly stay lower over the next 3-5 years, as many countries will actively search for renewables to replace at least part of their existing fossil fuel infrastructure; again mostly out of necessity. Right?

It's quite possible that this war did more to switch societies around the globe to renewable energies than any other measure (save for China, of course) at a time when it really mattered.

Iran may have just just locked in a double victory for us and our Queen - less Zionazi influence AND less CO2!

The crazy thing about all this is that Trump could've attacked Iran, I don't know, a month into his presidency. Before all the "invading Greenland" stuff, before "Have you said thank you even once?" and if this situation happened then it would put European leaders in a much more difficult position. They'd have to pick a side, and those who cooperate would then have a harder time going against Trump because they committed, and those that didn't cooperate, their lack of cooperation could be used as a pretext to fuck with them. And the mood early on was like, "We just have to comply and appease him to weather the storm."

But by showing his hand first, he's made it incredibly easy for everyone to say they've had enough of his shit and he's on his own. It doesn't make any sense to me.

Only explanations I can see is that Trump has hit cognitive decline to the point that he doesn't know how to not look like a loser anymore, or it really was unplanned and Israel forced their hand.

Btw, can someone explain to me why the US asked for China's help with the straight? Does this accomplish anything other than making the US look weak and desperate?

North Korea Just Overtook the U.S. in Destroyer Construction.

spoiler

North Korean shipyards have overtaken those of the United States in the construction of ocean-going surface combat ships, with the shipbuilding industry having launched two destroyers in 2025, and scheduled to launch two more every year for the next five years under the next Five Year Plan, bringing total numbers in the water to 12 by the end of 2030. The U.S., by contrast, has been building Arleigh Burke class destroyers at rates of just 1.6 per year.

While the contraction in U.S. production of surface warships has declined much more slowly than the contraction of the civilian shipbuilding industry, the fall in the number of surface combat ships, and in the total tonnage launched per year has nevertheless been tremendous. North Korea, by contrast, had negligible industry for producing modern service ships until the 2020s, with limited resources concentrated on the submarine fleet.

Although unfortunately the Korean People’s Navy likely doesn’t have as advanced systems as the usn does, it does show how unserious the us currently is about shipbuilding.

China sends Cuba its first shipment of 60,000 tons of rice - Prensa Latina

Article

In the message from the official account on X, the diplomatic headquarters added that "in the face of adversity, the solidarity of true friends prevails and demonstrates that #CubaIsNotAlone."

China has stated on several occasions that it will continue its "support and assistance" to Cuba in the face of repeated threats from the United States, and condemned Washington's pressures that "compromise regional peace and stability."

Recently, the Chinese ambassador to Cuba, Hua Xin, denounced the impact of the United States blockade against the Cuban people and reaffirmed his country's support in the face of the current intensification of that policy.

The chief diplomat stressed that his country will continue its support in defending sovereignty and national security, while further strengthening cooperation in key sectors such as energy and food.

Among the projects underway, he mentioned the synchronization of solar parks donated by China to the national grid, the implementation of solar power systems in isolated homes and social centers, and the delivery of food assistance, including the shipment of thousands of tons of rice.

Been here in Tehran for the past couple of days, here are a few observations.

  • Striking contrast, despite the ongoing military confrontation, daily life largely continues. Shops, restaurants, and malls are open, clear shift from the paralyzed atmosphere of last year’s 12-day war.
  • Iranian authorities are navigating on two layers. State rhetoric clearly frames this as an existential conflict, yet there is a concerted domestic effort to project normalcy and stability for residents. All indicators suggest the government is bracing for a protracted, multi-month conflict.
  • Because Tehran is such a huge city, the physical toll of the conflict isn't spotted. Destruction is localized, though the damage is unmistakable in certain districts. Meanwhile, state mobilization remains highly visible, with several pro-government rallies taking place across various neighborhoods.
  • Following a deceptively calm day yesterday, airstrikes targeted local fuel depots post-midnight. The escalation continued into this morning with a massive blast heard toward the city center, followed by at least two more explosions in the northern suburbs.
  • These strikes on critical energy infrastructure represent a significant pressure on the state and residents. Aside from the day to day impact, the scene, the smoke, the smell all have their own effects.

An interesting update regarding yesterday's Iranian air defenses hit on a US imperialist "stealth" F-35 warplane:

According to NPR, “the pilot is in stable condition with shrapnel wounds, and the F-35 made a hard landing and won’t be returning to service anytime soon.”

https://thecradle.co/articles/sri-lanka-denied-us-request-to-land-armed-warplanes-at-civilian-airport

MoA commented on the curious "hard landing" wording:

Reportedly the pilot was injured and the plane made a ‘hard landing’ – which likely means that the pilot ejected before the jet crashed down.

The moment an RT crew in southern Lebanon was targeted by an IOF drone strike. Thankfully they all survived despite injuries. I wonder if Russia will have a diplomatic response.

The IRGC warned Washington to evacuate all US-owned businesses in West Asia:

"We are warning the defeated US regime to evacuate all American businesses in the region. In addition, we urge the residents of areas located near the industrial facilities, in which Americans are the shareholders to leave these territories to avoid possible damage," Fars quoted the IRGC statement as saying.

It said the strikes may be carried out in the coming hours.

The Guardian update

12m ago

A fresh ballistic missile launch from Iran has been detected, with the Jerusalem area identified as a potential target, as sirens sound once again — the fourth alert within the space of an hour. Loud explosions are echoing across the city. Despite repeated claims by Israel and the US that Iran’s airspace is under control, Tehran has continued to penetrate Israel’s defences, with missiles reaching the skies over the holy city and triggering successive warnings.

There's a new feature to missile sirens here in Israel. Whenever you hear one, especially if they are not in your district, you hear the rumble of jets. That tells me that Israel is running out of interceptor missiles and must scramble jets every time. Does that make sense?

The real reason this is happening is because Iran has successfully taken out all the 4 X-band radars across the middle east -- these cost billions of dollars, decades to build, and are irreplaceable at current procurement rates. X-band radars are CRITICAL for detecting incoming missile-strikes from a long-range, but more importantly: FOR DISCRIMINATING BETWEEN ACTUAL MISSILE WARHEADS, CHAFF, SUBMUNITIONS, BOOSTER STAGES, OR OTHER MISCELLANEOUS DEBRIS. Without this, the ENTIRE missile defense strategy of Israel collapses, as has been witnessed in the past week, because it becomes impossible to smartly utilize interceptors, and instead full clips of multi-million dollar upper-tier interceptors get wasted on nonsense, essentially making interception rapidly unsustainable. The dead giveaway of Israel's interception doctrine having collapsed was Iran utilizing Khorramshahr-4 missiles with submunition payloads: this would SPECIFICALLY be reserved for phases of the war where Israel both has few interceptors and also no ability to distinguish between interceptors and chaff/penetration aids/misc debris. Otherwise, Israel could use smart-identification to send an interceptor to hit the Khorramshahr-4 warhead BEFORE submunitions separate, wasting Iran's expensive submunition warheads.

These submunition warheads have a CEP of a few kilometers, they are literally designed to pepper entire airbases, destroying air frames, destroying several runways at once, destroying refueling systems, and decreasing the sortie generation rate at each airbase significantly. This produces an exponentially profitable situation for Iran where enemy defenses scale down at a simultaneous rate that enemy offenses do, both at non-linear rates. This means that every single time ANY MISSILE LAUNCH is detected by Israel, they have to get as many air assets airborne as is humanly possible or risk having them destroyed as the submunitions can even penetrate bunkers and hardened airframe shelters. Without this, the Israeli Airforce literally gets ground down to zero airframes in a matter of days. This takes expensive fuel, expensive pilot on-duty time, and has the net result of reducing combat readiness. If Iran steps up the frequency of attacks, it also means that eventually Israel has to evac the planes to a foreign country, dropping their offensive sortie capability to zero, essentially surrendering in the war to Iran.

infinite meth doses upon the Israeli pilot population (https://hexbear.net/post/7856493/6980933)

Case in point: USAF C-17 unable to land at Nevatim and flying donuts at low altitude at about the same time the missiles were incoming

Sanders, Van Hollen move to block new U.S. arms sales to Israel

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) introduced a Joint Resolution of Disapproval on Thursday targeting roughly $659 million in proposed arms sales, including $298 million for 5,000 small-diameter bombs, $209 million for 10,000 500-pound bombs, and $151.8 million for 12,000 1,000-pound bombs.

Under the Arms Export Control Act, the Senate Foreign Relations Committee will have five days to act. If it does not, Sanders and co-sponsors Sens. Chris Van Hollen (D-MD), Jeff Merkley (D-OR), and Peter Welch (D-VT) can force a floor vote through a privileged motion that cannot be filibustered and requires a simple majority to pass.

Highly doubt this is actually going to amount to anything but respect for doing.... uh bare minimum.

Brazil confirms shipment of more than 20,000 tons of food to Cuba - Prensa Latina

Article

Brasilia, March 19 (Prensa Latina) Brazil confirmed the shipment of 20,800 tons of food as humanitarian aid to Cuba, in response to the complex situation facing the island's population today.

The information was released by the Secretary for Latin America and the Caribbean of the Brazilian Foreign Ministry, Gisela Padovan, who assured the press on Wednesday that the South American giant maintains its usual good relations with the Caribbean nation and continues to closely monitor its humanitarian situation.

According to Brazil's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the donations include 20,000 tons of rice, 150 tons of beans, 150 tons of polished rice, and 500 tons of powdered milk, and are channeled through the World Food Programme.

Additionally, a shipment of medicines, including tuberculosis treatments and vaccines, was sent by air and arrived in Cuba this week, as part of the Brazilian government's support efforts.

Our relations remain the same as always: good, with plenty of dialogue and consensus. There are no specific changes, but we are very concerned about the humanitarian situation of the Cuban people, the diplomat said regarding bilateral ties.

The goal is to ensure that the Cuban population, which has already endured decades of hardship, does not suffer further harm due to the political situation. Brazil will always have this humanitarian concern, Padovan concluded.

Brazil's aid comes amid a severe crisis in Cuba, following the tightening of the US embargo after President Donald Trump threatened in January to impose tariffs on those who supply fuel to the island.

Earlier this month, Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva criticized the persecution of Cuba and suggested that the situation there is not the result of a lack of productivity, but rather of those who want to see it suffering.

During the opening of the Ministerial Meeting of the 39th FAO Regional Conference for Latin America and the Caribbean, the president stated that Cuba is not going hungry because it does not know how to produce or build its own energy.

"Cuba is going hungry because they don't want it to have certain things that everyone should have," Lula said about the Caribbean country, which has been subjected to Washington's economic, commercial and financial blockade for more than 60 years.

In addition to this government assistance, numerous organizations and activists from the South American giant are mobilizing efforts to send medicines, food, and solar panels to the Caribbean territory.

Several Brazilians are part of the Our America convoy to Cuba, which arrives this week on the island with participants from various countries to bring aid and show their solidarity.
