A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is of the three leaders of the constitutive states of the Alliance of Sahel States (Mali's Assimi Goïta, Niger's Abdourahamane Tchiani, and Burkina Faso's Ibrahim Traoré) marching together in Bamako, Mali.

At the start of last week concluded the Summit of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES in French), in which, among other significant news, was the announcement of the creation of a unified military force for the alliance - called, rather straightforwardly, the Unified Force - which currently consists of about 5000 soldiers. Strictly speaking, joint military operations between the three countries had already been taking place for over a year before this point, but I imagine this organization streamlines the internal processes and makes it truly official.

Mali's Goïta delivered a speech during the summit in which he stated there were three main threats to the alliance: military, economic, and media. While this new military force is a major effort to combat military threats, the three countries have also mutually launched television, radio, and print media organizations to combat disinformation and psychological warfare. The economic aspect is the most tricky aspect of all, as (albeit decaying) American hegemony is not friendly to states which seek an independent economic path, most especially if that path does not directly benefit Western international corporations. Nonetheless, the three countries are doing what they can; they mutually launched an AES passport earlier in 2025, and this month, Mali has taken a bold move, recovering $1.2 billion after renegotiating mining deals with mining corporations after a comprehensive audit. Gold mining in Mali is a major sector of the economy, comprising about 20% of annual government revenue.

The three countries have also withdrawn from ECOWAS. The remaining countries consist of a small collection of West African countries, most significantly among them Nigeria and Côte d’Ivoire. ECOWAS is increasingly seen by the AES leadership - quite rightfully - as an organization which seeks to contain the radical shift in West Africa and return the region to the neocolonial French-governed status quo. As I talked about in a semi-recent news megathread, Nigeria is experiencing its own suite of internal problems, so perhaps in the coming years, ECOWAS will crumble from within and the AES can push back the terrorist organizations threatening them.

Image is sourced from this article depicting the 28th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, which took place at the same time as the 47th ASEAN Summit.

Last week concluded the 47th summit of ASEAN in Malaysia as well as a swathe of concurrent summits surrounding ASEAN. For those unfamiliar, formally, China is not a member of ASEAN, but is part of the ASEAN Plus Three (as part of the "Three", alongside Japan and Occupied Southern Korea). And while not really ASEAN, there is also a yet wider organization, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which tacks on Australia and New Zealand to the group of countries that are currently in ASEAN (which is the single largest trade bloc on the planet). At the summit, Timor-Leste was officially introduced into ASEAN, making it the 11th country to do and the first since Cambodia in 1999.

Many important figures throughout Asia, as well as Trump, Ramaphosa, and Lula, attended the event. As you can imagine, Trump's appearance was not exactly positive - signing four rather coerced bilateral deals there, including with Malaysia, which forced those countries to buy American goods in exchange for certain exemptions from Trump's high tariff regime. The US is currently in a bit of a panic due to China restricting access to rare earths, a critical component of many weapons technologies (and electronics in general) and is looking around for countries to help supply them. After the summit, the US and China signed a deal related to tariffs and rare earths, but it seems very unlikely that this is the end of the saga; the US politically, economically, and militarily cannot tolerate China's existence as a sovereign actor and will try to overcome them until the American Empire topples.

Meanwhile, China did as they ordinarily do, and urged higher regional integration and trade without high tariffs, as well as adherence to the Global Governance Initiative (which, as we here never tire of noting, is an interesting thing to try and encourage while the US only more feverishly violates the sovereignty of nations everywhere). One hopes they're supplying a bit more than just speeches to Venezuela, Cuba, and beyond, as the US prepares to start bombing.

Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.

However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.

Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Image is from this article, showing a march by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela Youth. The preamble's information came from a few sources, such as here, here, and here.

Over the last few weeks, pressure on Venezuela from the US has mounted as their newest proxy, Gonzalez, lost the election to Maduro. The Trump administration now alleges that Maduro is the mastermind behind the "Cartel of Suns," raised the bounty on Maduro's head from $25 million to $50 million, and is working to deploy troops and naval assets to the region.

While I would not consider myself an expert, I believe an explicit boots-on-the-ground campaign by the US in Venezuela would be, at best, implausible, though the administration has not explicitly denied it (and even if it did deny it, denials by the US are merely confirmations that are being delayed). What seems much more likely is an intensification of a subversive campaign against Venezuela which seeks to further isolate it, with intelligence from the US given to whatever groups and individuals exist inside the country. There are certainly some parallels in regard to recent US belligerence towards Mexico, with both countries being implicitly or explicitly threatened with military force under the guise of "preventing drug trafficking" - and, of course, spreading drugs is one of America's greatest specialities.

Will this work? I don't know, though I am optimistic about Venezuela's chances. The Venezuelan government does seem to be taking this threat with a refreshing degree of seriousness - with over 4 million militia members being activated across the country as of August 18th, as well as a call from Maduro to the armed forces to be on high alert. The socialist youth of Venezuela are being mobilized in defense of the revolution.

Palestinian Factions Sign Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity 2024-07-23 18:49

On July 23, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi attended in Beijing the closing ceremony of the reconciliation talks of Palestinian factions and witnessed the signing of the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity by 14 Palestinian factions.

In his remarks, Wang Yi noted that since entering the new era, President Xi Jinping has put forward proposals and propositions on addressing the Palestinian question, contributing Chinese wisdom and solution for addressing the question. Now, 14 Palestinian factions are gathering in Beijing with the greater good of their nation in mind. This is an important historical moment in the Palestinian liberation cause. China commends the reconciliation efforts made by all the factions, and congratulates them on the success of the Beijing dialogue and the signing of the Beijing Declaration.

Wang Yi pointed out that only when Palestinian factions speak as one can the voice of justice be loud and clear, and only when they join hands and march forward shoulder to shoulder can they succeed in their national liberation cause. The most important consensus from the Beijing talks is to achieve the reconciliation and unity among the 14 factions; the core outcome is the affirmation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people; the biggest highlight is the agreement on establishing an interim government of national reconciliation focusing on the post-conflict reconstruction of Gaza; and the strongest call is for truly establishing an independent State of Palestine in accordance with relevant U.N. resolutions. The key to the Palestinian reconciliation process is to bolster confidence, keep to the right direction, and make incremental progress. Only by making continuous efforts to build consensus and put it into practice can the reconciliation process yield more and more substantive progress and greater unity. Reconciliation is the internal affair of Palestinian factions, and cannot happen without international support. On the path toward reconciliation, China shares the same direction and destination with Arab and Islamic countries.

Wang Yi noted that the Palestinian question is at the core of the Middle East issue. China never has any selfish interests on the Palestinian question. China was among the first countries to recognize the PLO and the State of Palestine. China all along firmly supports the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights. We value fairness and advocate for justice. At present, the Gaza conflict drags on, its spillovers continue to spread, and multiple regional conflicts are interconnected. To help get out of the current conflict and predicament, China proposes a three-step initiative:

The first step is to achieve comprehensive, lasting and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible, and ensure access to humanitarian aid and rescue on the ground. The international community should build more synergy for ending the hostilities and establishing a ceasefire.

The second step is to make joint efforts toward post-conflict governance of Gaza under the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine.” Gaza is an inseparable, integral part of Palestine. Restarting post-conflict reconstruction as soon as possible is an urgent priority. The international community needs to support Palestinian factions in establishing an interim national consensus government and realizing effective management of Gaza and the West Bank.

The third step is to help Palestine become a full member state of the U.N. and get down to implementing the two-State solution. It is important to support the convening of a broad-based, more authoritative, and more effective international peace conference to work out a timetable and road map for the two-State solution.

Ceasefire and humanitarian rescue are pressing priorities. “Palestinians governing Palestine” is the basic principle for the post-conflict governance of Gaza. The two-State solution is the fundamental way forward. The international community should support the parties in taking the three steps in real earnest.

Wang Yi noted that intra-Palestinian reconciliation will bring hope and a future to the Palestinian people. It is an important step toward resolving the Palestinian question and achieving peace and stability in the Middle East. Unwavering efforts must be continually made in this direction. China sincerely hopes that Palestinian factions will achieve reconciliation and, on that basis, realize independent statehood at an early date. We will strengthen communication and coordination with the relevant parties and make joint efforts for the implementation of the Beijing Declaration.

Head of the Fatah delegation Mr. Mahmoud al-Aloul and head of the Hamas delegation Mr. Musa Abu Marzouk delivered remarks on behalf of the Palestinian factions. They noted that China holds an important place in the heart of Palestinian people, and expressed sincere appreciation for President Xi Jinping and China’s unchanging, firm support and selfless assistance to Palestine over a long period of time. They spoke highly of China’s acting as a responsible major country and upholding justice for Palestine in international fora. They expressed deep appreciation for China’s strong support for intra-Palestinian dialogue and reconciliation. They stated their readiness to implement the consensus, strengthen unity among factions, advance the reconciliation process, and work for an early solution to the question of Palestine.

Diplomatic envoys to China or their representatives from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Russia and Türkiye as well as representatives from 14 main Palestinian factions attended the closing ceremony.

CEBU — Days before Christmas, a 55-year-old woman peasant leader was shot dead in her home late Monday night, December 23, in sitio Makilo, barangay Camansi, Kabankalan City, Negros Occidental.

Warlita Jimenez was inside her bedroom when two armed men wearing bonnets forcibly entered their house at around 11:00 p.m. and shot her four times, according to accounts from her family. She died on the spot.

Jimenez was a local leader of a farmers’ organization and had been active in campaigns for land rights in the area.

Jocel Anecito, daughter of Warlita Jimenez, broke down in her mother’s bedroom after learning the news. “We haven’t even moved on (and) now another life in our family has been taken,” Anecito told 99.7 Brigada Kabankalan.

Jimenez was the wife of Joseph Jimenez, another farmer-leader who was killed on November 30, 2022, after being captured by soldiers of the military’s 15th Infantry Battalion. He was killed alongside Ericson Acosta, a peace consultant of the National Democratic Front (NDF) in Negros.

Following her husband’s death, Jimenez was reportedly subjected to repeated harassment by state forces. Rights groups said she was frequently summoned to barangay offices and pressured to surrender as an alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA), accusations Jimenez’s family denied.

Targeted killings

Citing the threats, harassment, and red-tagging Warlita Jimenez had faced, Human Rights Advocates Negros (HRAN) alleged that government soldiers may be behind her killing, according to a report by 99.7 Brigada Kabankalan.

In the same report, 15th Infantry Battalion commander Lieutenant Colonel Elmar Salvador denied HRAN’s allegations, saying the military does not target innocent civilians and claiming that the New People’s Army (NPA) was responsible.

Farmers groups debunked the military’s claims.

According to a joint statement by national peasant groups Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP) and Tanggol Magsasaka, both Warlita and Joseph were members of Paghiliusa sang mga Magagmay nga Mangunguma kag Mamumugon sa Brgy. Camansi (PAMMACA), a local farmers association facing a land dispute with the hacienda-owning Sola family.

The groups said the Sola clan has been “…violently ejecting and exploiting peasants in Kabankalan since the 1940s.” The statement also alleged that the clan “…continues to employ goons and coercion against farmers with rightful claims to over 140 hectares of agrarian reform lands in the city.”

The military dismantled PAMMACA after Joseph’s death and began repeatedly harassing and forcing Warlita and other Camansi residents to surrender as members of the NPA. Warlita repeatedly rejected these accusations and sought assistance from the regional office of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR).

Human rights alliance Karapatan said the killing took place amid a pattern of violence targeting peasant leaders and their families in Negros since the implementation of Memorandum Order No. 32 (MO 32). Issued by former president Rodrigo Duterte in 2018, MO 32 placed the island, along with parts of Bicol and Eastern Visayas, under heightened militarization to address what his administration described as “lawless violence” and “acts of terror” in the regions.

Cristina Palabay, Karapatan secretary general, said the attack took place even as families across the country were marking the Christmas season.

“The murder of Warlita Jimenez reflects the climate of fear and violence faced by farming communities in Negros,” Palabay said, citing continued reports of harassment, surveillance, and killings of peasant leaders.

The family of Warlita, together with rights advocates including the September 21 Movement–South Negros (S21M) and Human Rights Advocates in Negros (HRAN), is calling for an immediate and independent investigation into her killing and urging authorities to identify and hold those responsible to account.

“Her death outpaced the snail-paced investigation by the Commission on Human Rights into the killing of her husband. Not content with killing Joseph Jimenez and Ericson Acosta, they have now targeted Warlita Jimenez,” HRAN told 99.7 Brigada Kabankalan. (RVO)

On 5 January I will go on trial at Kingston Crown Court charged with an offence under Section12 of the Terrorism Act 2000. The maximum penalty if found guilty is 14 years in gaol. There are others due to follow me.

You might be forgiven for thinking that my ‘offence’ was preparing a bomb intended for the Israeli Embassy. In fact, it was disagreeing with government policy and received opinion.

I was arrested on 20 December 2023 by Counter-Terrorism Police in a dawn raid under the Terrorism Act 2000. My ‘crime’ was posting a tweet, one month previously, saying that I supported the Palestinian resistance against the Israeli Defence Forces.

The anti-terrorism police are reminiscent of the Thought Police (Thinkpol) in George Orwell’s 1984, who spent their time hunting down “thought crime.” Britain’s equivalent of seized my electronic devices – computers, laptop, mobile phone etc. When I applied to the courts to recover these items, the police justified their retention by saying that they provided a ‘highly relevant insight’ into my mind.

The aim of Orwell’s Thought Police was to enforce mental conformity, ensuring citizens police their own minds. In his Expert Witness Statement in the Case for the Deproscription of Hamas, Jonathan Cook, a journalist who has worked on The Guardian, The Observer and The Times amongst other papers and a recipient of the Martha Gellhorn Special Prize for Journalism in 2011, wrote:

Over the past several months, I have been watching with growing professional alarm – and personal trepidation – what I can only describe as a campaign of political intimidation and persecution of a number of journalists in the UK. The journalists who have been targeted share one thing in common: they report and comment on Israel’s actions in Gaza from a critical perspective that judges those actions to be genocidal…

This war is more dangerous, more complex, and more difficult than the war with Iraq between 1980 and 1988

The situation during the war with Iraq was clear: they fired missiles, and we knew where to strike. But today, they surround us from all sides, apply pressure on us, obstruct our trade, and raise public expectations inside society in various fields.

https://www.the-independent.com/news/world/middle-east/gaza-israel-palestinians-ceasefire-families-killed-b2887779.html

Jaber al-Attar, a 51-year-old doctor living in northern Gaza, was elated when the news arrived of a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, bringing an end to two years of relentless bombardment. But just four weeks after it was announced, he received a phone call on his way to work at Al-Awda Hospital in Nuseirat to say that his daughter, Maysaa, had been killed by Israeli drone fire as she sheltered in a tent. “There is absolutely no safety; there is no hope for us to have any security,” he tells The Independent from the same tent in the Al-Atatra area of Beit Lahia, where he is living after being displaced. “I spent my life in hardship and misery.” Jaber’s daughter is one of at least 410 Palestinians to be killed since the ceasefire came into effect on 10 October, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry.

During a victory lap speech in the Knesset, US president Donald Trump had promised “peace for all eternity”. But for Gazans, the nightmare has not ended: it is a ceasefire in name only. In addition to the more than 400 Palestinians who have been killed, the health ministry says that 1,134 have been injured by Israeli shelling and gunfire. At least three Israeli troops have also been killed by Palestinian militants, while two people were killed on Friday in what police called a "rolling terror attack" in northern Israel. Images show a landscape unchanged by two months of peace, with apartments razed to the ground and families wandering among the rubble. Humanitarian agencies continue to warn that nowhere near enough aid is entering the strip, which has been in the grip of a hunger crisis for most of the year. “From the very first moment, and every day, morning and evening, there is gunfire and artillery shelling in the yellow and non-yellow zones. There is no peace of mind. There is nowhere else for us to go. There is nothing but your own destroyed place,” says Jaber. “We are still suffering to this day. There is heavy gunfire and intense shelling, but this is the state of our country: a tragedy we did not choose.”

The deadliest night of the “ceasefire” so far came on 29 October, when at least 109 Palestinians were killed by Israeli forces during an overnight attack. The Israeli military said the attack was a response to the killing of an IDF soldier by Hamas. The militant group said it had “no connection” to the incident. Dozens more Palestinians, including children, have been killed after crossing the “yellow line”. This refers to the boundary which Israeli forces agreed to withdraw from under Mr Trump’s ceasefire, but Gazans say its position is constantly changing – with deadly consequences. The Israeli military says its operations, in particular within the yellow line, are “carried out to address direct threats from terrorist organisations in Gaza”.

But in one particularly horrific incident, two young boys – Fadi, 8, and Jumaa, 11 – had gone out to gather firewood for their wheelchair-bound father in Beni Suhaila, near Khan Younis. They were killed by a drone strike near a school sheltering displaced people. The IDF described the children as “two suspects who crossed the yellow line, conducted suspicious activities on the ground, and approached IDF troops operating in the southern Gaza Strip, posing an immediate threat to them”. Israel says it has abided by the terms of the ceasefire, and has repeatedly described victims of its attacks as suspected terrorists.

A dispute over aid is also ongoing, with humanitarian groups warning that far less aid than required is entering the strip. Hamas claims fewer trucks are entering Gaza than had been agreed, but Israel maintains that it is fulfilling all of its obligations under Mr Trump’s plan. As Israel and Hamas continue to trade blows, the suffering of ordinary Palestinians continues. Since his daughter’s death, Jaber says he has suffered psychologically, his weight plummeting from 100kg to 75kg. “I used to own three houses, and now I’m homeless in a tent,” he says.

Imad Abu Shawish, a 38-year-old freelance journalist, has seen the horror of post-ceasefire Gaza up close. On 22 November, he sifted through the rubble of an Israeli airstrike on a residential building in Nuseirat, which killed 11 members of the Abu Shawish family, including two married couples and seven children. Only one daughter from the two families survived: 19-year-old Batoul. Imad pulled her from under the flattened building with his own hands. “There is absolutely no safety, no safety at all,” he tells The Independent. “My life has changed drastically. My eating and drinking habits have changed. My emotional and psychological behaviour has changed. My feelings towards others have changed. I am still in shock, deeply traumatised.” He continues: “I don’t know where I am or what I am going through. What happened to me? I still don’t have an answer. I’ve become terrified, anxious, fearful, and panicky. Perhaps it’s because I’m afraid the war will return at any moment and we’ll be killed. “I don’t think these bad feelings will easily disappear from our minds. We need internal healing and psychological treatment.”

Palestinians have also been suffering in severe winter weather, with strong winds and torrential rains tearing apart tents housing hundreds of thousands of homeless families. “Everyone’s tents are flooded,” says Abed al-Moneim al-Zein, a 60-year-old from northern Gaza who is currently displaced in Khan Younis. “There aren’t enough tents, mattresses, or blankets.” His brother Ameen, a 56-year-old from Beit Lahia with a wife and three daughters, was killed 19 days after the ceasefire came into effect. “Ameen loved his city dearly; he adored it,” recalls Abed. “He was always smiling and participated in all the city’s events, from celebrations to football matches. “The area he went to wasn’t a yellow zone. He went looking for shelter after losing his home. It was a school in the city centre.”

Abed continued: “Life is nonexistent. There are no basic necessities. We live in fear, tension, anxiety, and terror. The war has affected us immensely, beyond human endurance.” The Israeli military said in a statement: “IDF troops under the Southern Command are deployed in the area in accordance with the ceasefire framework and will continue to act to remove any immediate threat. “In contrast, Hamas is not fulfilling its part of the agreement and has violated the ceasefire hundreds of times.”

Snip:

Syrian citizens of the Alawite minority sect took to the streets on 28 December to protest against government violence and sectarian persecution, in line with a call made by the community’s religious leader a day earlier.

Members of the minority sect protested in the Alawite neighborhoods of the central governorate of Homs, and in several towns and cities on the country’s coast, including Tartous, Jableh, and Latakia. Protests also erupted in Hama governorate, including in the city of Masyaf.

The protesters also expressed anger over the killing of eight Alawite civilians and the injury of over a dozen others in a terror blast at a mosque a few days earlier.

According to local media reports, government forces have attacked protesters in several areas, firing live ammunition to disperse crowds and making arrests at random.
