A reminder that as the US continues to threaten countries around the world, fedposting is to be very much avoided (even with qualifiers like "in Minecraft") and comments containing it will be removed.

Image is of a Russian missile impacting Ukraine.

As we rapidly approach the fourth anniversary of the beginning of the Ukraine War (an anniversary I absolutely did not expect would occur while the two sides were still in combat), we have seen Russia turn to a new strategy, starting late last year but intensifying in December and now January.

Russia seems intent to disconnect Ukrainian cities from the electrical grid by focussing bombing on thermal, gas, and hydro stations, causing major power blackouts across the country. Russia is also bombing substations relatively close to Ukraine's three nuclear power plants (Zaporzhye, the fourth, remains under Russia control), studiously avoiding hitting the premises of the NPPs themselves for obvious reasons. Even if they're far away from the NPPs, striking the substations does have risks, because if the nuclear reactors aren't shut off before the substations are bombed, there is a possibility that there will be insufficient backup power to prevent a meltdown - hence why Russia hasn't really attempted to do this for four years.

Most of the electricity generated in Ukraine comes from the nuclear power plants, both because of the infrastructure they had initially (Ukraine was 7th in the world in nuclear electricity generation before the war) and because Russia has bombed most non-nuclear power stations and substations already. Over the last couple weeks, we have seen Ukrainian media fly into a frenzy about long-lasting blackouts, especially in the middle of winter. After the Zionist entity destroyed virtually all civilian infrastructure in Gaza while the West cheered on, they now appear to have changed their mind on whether such strikes are an effective and humanitarian option to subject millions of people to.

Regardless of whether you personally believe these Russian strikes are justified (I'm pretty iffy myself), it must be stressed that Ukraine has been bombing Russian tankers and oil refineries and power stations for a long time now, so in a sense, this is a retaliation. It's also remarkable, compared to Western wars, that Ukraine was even still allowed to possess a functioning electrical grid for nearly four years into a war of this magnitude. That all being said, while Ukrainian strikes have been somewhat but not overly impactful on the Russian oil sector, the response is clearly very asymmetrical: Ukraine's power grid is, according to Ukrainian energy corporations, now 70% degraded and is virtually impossible to now repair, and blackouts can last most of the day.

For everybody's sake, I hope a ceasefire and peace deal will be reached soon. But after four years of seeing opportunities for an end to this war squandered over and over, I'm not holding my breath.

Image is sourced from this article depicting the 28th ASEAN Plus Three Summit, which took place at the same time as the 47th ASEAN Summit.

Last week concluded the 47th summit of ASEAN in Malaysia as well as a swathe of concurrent summits surrounding ASEAN. For those unfamiliar, formally, China is not a member of ASEAN, but is part of the ASEAN Plus Three (as part of the "Three", alongside Japan and Occupied Southern Korea). And while not really ASEAN, there is also a yet wider organization, the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership, which tacks on Australia and New Zealand to the group of countries that are currently in ASEAN (which is the single largest trade bloc on the planet). At the summit, Timor-Leste was officially introduced into ASEAN, making it the 11th country to do and the first since Cambodia in 1999.

Many important figures throughout Asia, as well as Trump, Ramaphosa, and Lula, attended the event. As you can imagine, Trump's appearance was not exactly positive - signing four rather coerced bilateral deals there, including with Malaysia, which forced those countries to buy American goods in exchange for certain exemptions from Trump's high tariff regime. The US is currently in a bit of a panic due to China restricting access to rare earths, a critical component of many weapons technologies (and electronics in general) and is looking around for countries to help supply them. After the summit, the US and China signed a deal related to tariffs and rare earths, but it seems very unlikely that this is the end of the saga; the US politically, economically, and militarily cannot tolerate China's existence as a sovereign actor and will try to overcome them until the American Empire topples.

Meanwhile, China did as they ordinarily do, and urged higher regional integration and trade without high tariffs, as well as adherence to the Global Governance Initiative (which, as we here never tire of noting, is an interesting thing to try and encourage while the US only more feverishly violates the sovereignty of nations everywhere). One hopes they're supplying a bit more than just speeches to Venezuela, Cuba, and beyond, as the US prepares to start bombing.

Those who were around in the early days of the news megathread may remember Pedro Castillo, the left-leaning leader of Peru who was deposed in December 2022. He was replaced by Dina Boluarte, the first woman to be President of Peru, who described herself as a progressive but afterwards routinely sided with Peruvian conservatives and American interests. To say she was unpopular is an understatement of titanic proportions - she descended to such lows that she was, at one point, the single most unpopular leader on the planet. As with most deeply unpopular leaders that side with the West, she kept power for a bafflingly long time.

However, on October 10th, after a period of protests against the government, she was impeached and removed by Peru's Congress in a unanimous vote. José Jerí was sworn in as the new President, who was previously the President of the Congress and is a member of a centrist Peruvian party. The government is trying the classic strategy: keep doing the same thing as before, and sacrifice an unpopular figure - here, Boluarte - in the hopes that this appeases the crowd.

Is this strategy working? It doesn't really seem to be - protests are not only continuing, but strengthening, as it is clear that neoliberalism will not reformed and the brutality by police will not stop (there was very recently a high-profile case in which a musician, Mauricio Ruiz, was murdered). Controversies surrounding Jerí, including allegations of SA, are already being reported. If Jerí is deposed, the next person in line to try their hand at ruling will be the former army general Roberto Chiabra, who would be the ninth President in less than a decade.

Image is from this article, showing a march by the United Socialist Party of Venezuela Youth. The preamble's information came from a few sources, such as here, here, and here.

Over the last few weeks, pressure on Venezuela from the US has mounted as their newest proxy, Gonzalez, lost the election to Maduro. The Trump administration now alleges that Maduro is the mastermind behind the "Cartel of Suns," raised the bounty on Maduro's head from $25 million to $50 million, and is working to deploy troops and naval assets to the region.

While I would not consider myself an expert, I believe an explicit boots-on-the-ground campaign by the US in Venezuela would be, at best, implausible, though the administration has not explicitly denied it (and even if it did deny it, denials by the US are merely confirmations that are being delayed). What seems much more likely is an intensification of a subversive campaign against Venezuela which seeks to further isolate it, with intelligence from the US given to whatever groups and individuals exist inside the country. There are certainly some parallels in regard to recent US belligerence towards Mexico, with both countries being implicitly or explicitly threatened with military force under the guise of "preventing drug trafficking" - and, of course, spreading drugs is one of America's greatest specialities.

Will this work? I don't know, though I am optimistic about Venezuela's chances. The Venezuelan government does seem to be taking this threat with a refreshing degree of seriousness - with over 4 million militia members being activated across the country as of August 18th, as well as a call from Maduro to the armed forces to be on high alert. The socialist youth of Venezuela are being mobilized in defense of the revolution.

Palestinian Factions Sign Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity 2024-07-23 18:49

On July 23, 2024, Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Minister of Foreign Affairs Wang Yi attended in Beijing the closing ceremony of the reconciliation talks of Palestinian factions and witnessed the signing of the Beijing Declaration on Ending Division and Strengthening Palestinian National Unity by 14 Palestinian factions.

In his remarks, Wang Yi noted that since entering the new era, President Xi Jinping has put forward proposals and propositions on addressing the Palestinian question, contributing Chinese wisdom and solution for addressing the question. Now, 14 Palestinian factions are gathering in Beijing with the greater good of their nation in mind. This is an important historical moment in the Palestinian liberation cause. China commends the reconciliation efforts made by all the factions, and congratulates them on the success of the Beijing dialogue and the signing of the Beijing Declaration.

Wang Yi pointed out that only when Palestinian factions speak as one can the voice of justice be loud and clear, and only when they join hands and march forward shoulder to shoulder can they succeed in their national liberation cause. The most important consensus from the Beijing talks is to achieve the reconciliation and unity among the 14 factions; the core outcome is the affirmation of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) as the sole legitimate representative of all Palestinian people; the biggest highlight is the agreement on establishing an interim government of national reconciliation focusing on the post-conflict reconstruction of Gaza; and the strongest call is for truly establishing an independent State of Palestine in accordance with relevant U.N. resolutions. The key to the Palestinian reconciliation process is to bolster confidence, keep to the right direction, and make incremental progress. Only by making continuous efforts to build consensus and put it into practice can the reconciliation process yield more and more substantive progress and greater unity. Reconciliation is the internal affair of Palestinian factions, and cannot happen without international support. On the path toward reconciliation, China shares the same direction and destination with Arab and Islamic countries.

Wang Yi noted that the Palestinian question is at the core of the Middle East issue. China never has any selfish interests on the Palestinian question. China was among the first countries to recognize the PLO and the State of Palestine. China all along firmly supports the Palestinian people in restoring their legitimate national rights. We value fairness and advocate for justice. At present, the Gaza conflict drags on, its spillovers continue to spread, and multiple regional conflicts are interconnected. To help get out of the current conflict and predicament, China proposes a three-step initiative:

The first step is to achieve comprehensive, lasting and sustainable ceasefire in the Gaza Strip as soon as possible, and ensure access to humanitarian aid and rescue on the ground. The international community should build more synergy for ending the hostilities and establishing a ceasefire.

The second step is to make joint efforts toward post-conflict governance of Gaza under the principle of “Palestinians governing Palestine.” Gaza is an inseparable, integral part of Palestine. Restarting post-conflict reconstruction as soon as possible is an urgent priority. The international community needs to support Palestinian factions in establishing an interim national consensus government and realizing effective management of Gaza and the West Bank.

The third step is to help Palestine become a full member state of the U.N. and get down to implementing the two-State solution. It is important to support the convening of a broad-based, more authoritative, and more effective international peace conference to work out a timetable and road map for the two-State solution.

Ceasefire and humanitarian rescue are pressing priorities. “Palestinians governing Palestine” is the basic principle for the post-conflict governance of Gaza. The two-State solution is the fundamental way forward. The international community should support the parties in taking the three steps in real earnest.

Wang Yi noted that intra-Palestinian reconciliation will bring hope and a future to the Palestinian people. It is an important step toward resolving the Palestinian question and achieving peace and stability in the Middle East. Unwavering efforts must be continually made in this direction. China sincerely hopes that Palestinian factions will achieve reconciliation and, on that basis, realize independent statehood at an early date. We will strengthen communication and coordination with the relevant parties and make joint efforts for the implementation of the Beijing Declaration.

Head of the Fatah delegation Mr. Mahmoud al-Aloul and head of the Hamas delegation Mr. Musa Abu Marzouk delivered remarks on behalf of the Palestinian factions. They noted that China holds an important place in the heart of Palestinian people, and expressed sincere appreciation for President Xi Jinping and China’s unchanging, firm support and selfless assistance to Palestine over a long period of time. They spoke highly of China’s acting as a responsible major country and upholding justice for Palestine in international fora. They expressed deep appreciation for China’s strong support for intra-Palestinian dialogue and reconciliation. They stated their readiness to implement the consensus, strengthen unity among factions, advance the reconciliation process, and work for an early solution to the question of Palestine.

Diplomatic envoys to China or their representatives from Egypt, Algeria, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Russia and Türkiye as well as representatives from 14 main Palestinian factions attended the closing ceremony.

Ecuador's Foreign Ministry filed a formal note of protest on Tuesday after a US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent tried to enter the South American nation's consulate in Minneapolis before being stopped by a staffer inside the building.

In a statement released following the incident, the Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry said an ICE agent "attempted to enter the consulate premises," but "consulate officials immediately prevented" the officer from getting through the door, "thus ensuring the protection of Ecuadorians who were present at the time and activating emergency protocols."

The ministry said it "immediately presented a note of protest" to the US Embassy in Quito, Ecuador's capital, "so that acts of this nature are not repeated in any of Ecuador's consular offices in the United States."

Under international treaties, law enforcement officers of host nations are barred from entering foreign embassies and consulates without permission.

One eyewitness to the incident in Minneapolis, a flashpoint in the Trump administration's violent mass deportation efforts, told Reuters that they saw ICE agents "going after two people in the street, and then those people went into the consulate and the officers tried to go in after them."

Video footage posted to social media shows a consulate official walking quickly to the building's entryway and repeatedly telling an ICE agent that he "cannot enter."

The ICE agent can be heard telling the consulate staffer, "If you touch me, I will grab you."

BREAKING: In Minneapolis today, an ICE agent tried to force his way into the Ecuadorian consulate, a clear violation of international law, and was turned away by staff protecting people inside.

"ICE set off an international incident in Minneapolis today because agents tried to go into the Consulate of Ecuador without permission, and then yelled at their staff for trying to keep them out," Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a senior fellow at the American Immigration Council, wrote on social media.

"Note that there is a huge 'consulate of Ecuador' sign over the door," he added, pointing to an image of the building.

ICE

A disabled man has died because ICE have been detaining his carer father since October. Maher Tarabishi was arrested by the immigration militia in October 2025 whilst having a routine check in his home state of Texas. He was the sole carer of his 30-year-old son Wael, who had Pompe disease.

Disabled man’s health deteriorated after carer arrested

Originally from Jordan, Maher has been in the US since 1994. He has raised a family, worked, and pays taxes.  Maher was seeking asylum in Texas and had been permitted to remain in the country. But ICE arrested him anyway, whilst he was literally following the rules and attending an immigration appointment

As a result of his father’s imprisonment, Wael’s health deteriorated. He was admitted to hospital in December 2025. His feeding tube had become displaced, which caused his stomach to leak. He was in excruciating pain.

Government claims carer is a threat to national security

Their family and Wael’s doctors made a direct plea to Donald Trump at a press conference in December to release Maher.

Dr. Bilal Piracha, a medical advocate for the family said:

I’m not here to talk about immigration policy. I’m not talking about politics. We are talking about mercy. We are talking about humanity

However, the government is trying to claim that Maher is a member of Palestine Liberation Organization. Tricia McLaughlin, assistant secretary for public affairs with the Department of Homeland Security, said in a statement to The Dallas Morning News:

ICE’s successful arrest of Tarabishi shows clear evidence of the game-changing impact the Trump administration’s immigration enforcement efforts are having to restore common sense to our immigration system, strengthen national security and public safety in our country

The Tarabishi family say this is not true. They described him as someone who always follows rules and has never even got a speeding ticket. It’s pretty clear that Homeland Security had to scramble to justify this arrest.

On Instagram in December, Wael said of his father:

He was the person who would help me want to live for tomorrow, and now I don’t have anything to live for in this life. I don’t know what’s gonna happen to me now.

Wael contracted pneumonia and sepsis in the hospital. He died on 23 January 2026.

Let Taher say goodbye to his son that ICE killed

The family are now demanding that Taher be released so that he can attend his son’s funeral.

It would be beyond inhumane and grotesque for ICE to prevent Maher from attending his son’s funeral after the unspeakable pain and hardship his abduction has brought upon his family

If you’re in the US, you can help the Tarabishi family to get Maher released. This involves calling the detention centre, your representatives and Homeland Security.

What ICE are doing in the US is beyond reprehensible. His father should have been able to be with his son: those ICE officers have Wael’s death on their hands.

ReaderLink, the largest distributor of hardcover, trade, and paperback books to booksellers in North America, stopped distributing mass market paperbacks at the end of 2025.

Mass-market paperbacks are usually about 5-by-7 inches, printed on lower-quality materials, and designed with affordability in mind. Trade paperbacks, on the other hand, are a bit larger and use higher-quality paper, making them more durable.

www.presstv.ir ‘New crime’: Hamas condemns Israel for exhuming hundreds of graves in Gaza Presstv 4 - 5 minutes

The Palestinian resistance movement Hamas has denounced a “new crime” by the “criminal” Israeli regime, saying Israeli forces dug up hundreds of graves in a cemetery east of the besieged Gaza Strip while searching for the body of the last captive.

“This moral and legal lawlessness by the Zionist entity is possible only because the international system refuses to hold it accountable for crimes unprecedented in modern times,” Hamas spokesperson Hazem Qassem said on Tuesday.

His comments followed a warning from Euro-Med Human Rights Monitor, which described the Israeli army’s large-scale excavation east of Gaza City, carried out under the pretext of searching for the final Israeli captive, as deeply disturbing and a grave violation of humanitarian norms.

The organization stressed that Israel’s justification does not grant any legitimacy to violating the sanctity of Palestinian burial grounds or desecrating the remains of the dead. It said any search should be limited, tightly regulated, subject to stringent humanitarian safeguards and conducted under independent international oversight, conditions Israel has ignored.

Over the past two years, Israel has systematically destroyed cemeteries in the Gaza Strip, dug up and vandalised graves, tampered with bodies, and transferred dozens of remains.

On Monday, the Israeli military claimed it had recovered the remains of Ran Gvili, the last captive held in Gaza, and transferred them to the occupied territories. Gvili, an Israeli policeman, is believed to have been killed during the October 7, 2023, al-Aqsa Storm Operation.

Israel’s announcement came as Hamas confirmed it had fully met its obligations under the ceasefire agreement, saying the movement had devoted extensive efforts to locating the body and providing mediators with first-hand information that enabled the recovery.

Hamas emphasized that it has honored the first stage of the agreement “clearly and responsibly” and said the burden now lies on Israel to implement the remaining terms.

In a separate statement on Tuesday, Hamas denounced Israel for "withholding hundreds of bodies of Palestinian martyrs - whether those they seized from the Gaza Strip during the genocidal war or those that have been held for decades in cemeteries of numbers."

The movement said Israel’s refusal to return the bodies or disclose information about them constitutes a “brutal crime” and a blatant violation of basic human values, enabled by a shameful and complicit international silence.

Elsewhere in his remarks on Tuesday, Qassem said Israeli forces killed at least four Palestinians this morning after targeting them with aircraft while they were outside the so-called yellow line east of Gaza City.

The Hamas spokesperson said this attack, along with the broader pattern of ongoing assaults on Palestinians, reflects Israel’s determination to continue its genocidal war in the Gaza Strip. He described the strike as a blatant defiance of all efforts to secure a ceasefire and a clear violation of the agreement intended to halt the war.

Qassem added that any talk of ending the war, establishing peace mechanisms, or launching reconstruction efforts becomes meaningless amid the continued daily killing of civilians in the besieged territory.

Hamas has called on the guarantor countries to uphold their responsibilities by ensuring the implementation of all obligations stalled by the occupation, after its pretext had ended with the finding of the body of the last Israeli captive.

On Monday, Acting President Delcy Rodriguez categorically stated that the Venezuelan government does not respond to external orders and obeys exclusively the will of its people.

[...]

“There is reciprocity between the Venezuelan people, their authorities and their institutions. At this difficult moment for the country, I am happy to have the honor of representing Venezuelans and obeying the Venezuelan people.”

“We have no other external authority to obey. Regarding the personal threats I receive, I want you to know that I was already aware of them when I was sworn in as acting president.”

“We are not afraid. Nor are we afraid of respectful relations with the United States, but they must be based on respect for international law, interpersonal relations, dignity and Venezuelan history,” the acting president stated.

Snip:

A young Israeli woman named Noya Zion was shocked to discover her photograph being broadcast on Israel’s national television as that of a victim killed in the protests in Iran, illustrating how the Israeli regime spreads fake news about the recent unrest and the Islamic government’s response to it.

Zion, who has never set foot in Iran, was at home on Monday when she tuned into Israel’s Channel 12 News and saw her image displayed under a headline claiming "Four Jews Killed in Protests in Iran."

The report falsely identified her as Sanaz Javaherian, an alleged demonstrator whom the channel claimed had been arrested and beaten to death by Iranian security forces.

"I never thought this would happen to me in my life... I'm in my house!" Zion exclaimed in a video she quickly posted to social media, filming herself alongside the erroneous TV broadcast. "I'm here, I'm alive, sitting at home, and in half an hour I'm going to training. I've never been to Iran in my life."

An Israeli drone attack killed a television presenter who worked for Lebanon’s Al-Manar TV station in the southern Lebanese city of Tyre, according to the Lebanese group Hezbollah.

Hezbollah said the killing on Monday of presenter Ali Nour al-Din, who worked for the Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Manar, portends “the danger of Israel’s extended escalations [in Lebanon] to include the media community”.

Lebanese minister of information, Paul Morcos, condemned the Israeli strike in a post on X, saying the "ongoing targeting of journalists and media professionals constitutes a clear war crime and a blatant violation of international laws."

“We declare our solidarity and condolences to the media family, and call on the international community to fully assume its responsibilities and take urgent action to put an end to these violations and ensure the protection of media professionals in Lebanon,” the minister said.

In a separate attack, an Israeli drone strike killed Egyptian citizen Abdul Nabi Ramadan Ameen Al Sayed and Lebanese civilian Samer Hteit when it hit their car in Kfar Rumman in southern Lebanon, according to the Quds news network.
