every time they salute each other

That's how you know for sure it's fake. Soldiers in training don't salute each other. They only salute officers.

[-] Ilovethebomb@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

God damnit, I wanted this to be true so badly.

[-] CH3DD4R_G0BL1N@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 months ago

If it makes you feel better, it is 100% something marines would do (not the saluting). At least until higher ups started threatening

[-] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 months ago

You can be training for an invasion without being in basic training, or are we to assume there are no continuous improvement efforts in the military?

[-] OwOarchist@pawb.social 5 points 2 months ago

Who said anything about basic training?

Soldiers don't go around saluting each other, no matter what stage of training they're in.

[-] AlDente@sh.itjust.works -1 points 2 months ago

Deployed in the field, no. In garrison, yes.

[-] nulluser@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Soldiers salute comissioned officers regularly, except in very specific circumstances.

Soldiers salute non-commissioned officers (enlisted with rank sergeant and above) very rarely in very specific circumstances.

Soldiers (enlisted below the rank of sergeant) never salute each other except maybe as a joke. It's just not a thing.

Soldiers (enlisted below the rank of sergeant) never salute each other except maybe as a joke.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. The claim is that soldiers are jokingly saluting each other in honor of the Epstein class. I find it inconceivable that there aren't groups of corporals jokingly saluting each other over the Epstein/Israel/Trump situation, especially after headlines like these came out. I find it incredibly hard to image they aren't jokingly saluting like-minded NCOs as well. And surely, there are some lieutenants telling them all to knock it off.

The guy I was originally responding to seems to have a nothing-ever-happens mentality, and I couldn't disagree more.

[-] takeda@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

Halfway Post is also a satire site like The Onion.

[-] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

For sure, and this headline has been circulating for weeks. If no soldiers were jokingly saluting about the obvious military manipulation by the Epstein-class before, then some have surely been inspired by this satirical post.

[-] nomy@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 months ago

Did you serve at all or are you just saying things?

[-] Holytimes@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago

Asking basically every coworker I have that's served and that's like 4 navy guys 3 marines 4 army dudes. They all basically confirmed what that guy said.

If it was for a joke they 100% would sarcasticly have saluted each other and made dumb jokes.

[-] Gork@sopuli.xyz 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

He served it al dente, obviously

Edit: assuming it's a guy with a name like Al

[-] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Actually, the name is inspired by an anti-binary mentality. I tend to disagree with black and white labels, and instead believe that most things can be found on the gradient between two extremes. I think this is reinforced by the idea that change is constant, and if you were to somehow become the 100% embodiment of an idea, it would only last for an infinitely small period of time as you bounce off the binary rev limiter, since you can't go past it.

To me, al dente represents a place on the gradient that just feels right. Al dente literally means "to the tooth", and is found by taking a bite to check if pasta is starting to become cooked, while still retaining some firmness. It's not undercooked, and it's not overcooked.

On the topic of the OP, I see the outright dismissals as one of the binary extremes. Even if the screenshot was of a parody account, it seems obsurd to say that this isn't happening and is misinformation. Israel and the Epstein class have such an obviously significant influence over US military. Surely soldiers have noticed, and if no one was jokingly saluting "for Epstein" before, some would have been inspired by this headline since it has been circulating for a few weeks now.

[-] ayyy@sh.itjust.works 0 points 2 months ago

Source: your pasta extruder.

[-] AlDente@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 months ago* (last edited 2 months ago)

I guess you're right, saluting was just a fad and nobody does that in the military anymore, not even to joke about serving Israel and the Epstein-class. Although, I stand by the comment about not saluting when deployed. In combat zones, a salute can indicate to the enemy who is higher ranking, and is normally prohibited.

[-] elevenbones@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 months ago

Okey dokie!

[-] backalleycoyote@lemmy.today 18 points 2 months ago
[-] ShaggySnacks@lemmy.myserv.one 18 points 2 months ago

I have now deemed this true in my head cannon.

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

If it really is true, I cannot stress enough just how bad it is. Like, really really bad.

[-] Devadander@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Good. It’s a farce and should be treated as such

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago
[-] tmyakal@infosec.pub 6 points 2 months ago

Halfway Post is a satire site. This is not true.

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

yeah I didn't figure it was true. but had to say it still just in case. And whoever wrote it knew what they were implying / trying to generate internet feelings. Because again, it would be epic bad if troops in training, this early in, were THAT cynical.

[-] alekwithak@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Is this a Fallout 4 reference?

[-] jumperalex@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

No. An honest assessment about just how bad it is if you're troops are already THAT cynical before they even leave garrison and aren't trying to hide it. I doubt it's true though.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

Do you load that with regular cannonballs?

[-] SeductiveTortoise@piefed.social 13 points 2 months ago
[-] militaryintelligence@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago

Most of the armed forces are MAGA, trust me

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 16 points 2 months ago

Maybe. Many are just dumb 20+ yos who didn't have opportunities.

My cousin was unemployed for three years after HS and wracking up college debt. He's now in the military and knowing him, he probably is sarcastically saying "For Epstein".

[-] apftwb@lemmy.world 7 points 2 months ago
[-] Godric@lemmy.world 4 points 2 months ago

What gave it away?

[-] RampantParanoia2365@lemmy.world 6 points 2 months ago

Oh yeah, 6 and 7. Classic generation alphas. I liked generation alphas 4 and 5, personally.

[-] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 3 points 2 months ago

It's better than 6 7 because it actually means something

[-] bjoern_tantau@swg-empire.de 4 points 2 months ago

It doesn't mean anything if they still commit war crimes.

[-] bdonvr@thelemmy.club 1 points 2 months ago

Yeah but, they're committing war crimes ironically.

[-] FilthyShrooms@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Nah it just means they're willing to commit crimes against humanity for the Epstein class

[-] 48954246@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

67 is fine. It took me a while to realise that.

It has exactly the same rules as The Game except you win when you hear 67. I think that's pretty nice.

[-] JasonDJ@lemmy.zip 1 points 2 months ago

Unlike their service in Iran.

[-] brucethemoose@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Humerous…

…But I see a blue checkmark, and I downvote. Nothing personal, but I will not support Twitter even indirectly.

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

What a dumb hill to die on. It's a screenshot, we're not even on Twitter.

[-] scarabic@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

I have trouble believing that the military can’t control recruits in training.

[-] Telodzrum@lemmy.world 2 points 2 months ago

lol

I can tell you’ve never been in the military, then.

[-] scarabic@lemmy.world 0 points 2 months ago

Oh I haven’t. But isn’t the discipline pretty strict? I mean I’m sure they get all kinds of randos enlisting, but aren’t they controlled very strictly during their training, to prepare them to follow orders well later?

I’m genuinely curious here. Feel free to educate me.

[-] tux7350@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

Naw, people are people no matter the situation. If you were an asshole before you join it's not like you'll just not be an asshole. You gotta make a choice to change and some people absolutely don't take that path.

And you'd be surprised what people will do knowing the consequences. Some people really just don't give a fuck lol

For example, while on restriction for getting a dui, one guy was told to clean the company commanders office. Took that as an opportunity to stand on the officers desk with a mop and cartoonishly slosh water over all his paperwork / mop the computer ect ect. He only got 30 more days of restrictions for that.

Feel free to ask me whatever if you're curious.

Boot camp was filled with some of the funniest shit I ever experienced in my life. Sometimes you just take the PT punishment cuz the laugh was worth it. Sometimes your drill instructor even breaks.
