The song was written by Jackson Browne, at the age of 16. Nico's version is the first one released, wherein Browne played the guitar, being 19 at the time. He has later released his own proper version, in 1973 — meaning the song written by Browne and performed by Browne was effectively a cover (although demo recordings seem to exist from before 1967).
