Massacre was founded in 1980 in New York City by guitarist Fred Frith, bassist Bill Laswell and drummer Fred Maher as an improvising and experimental rock band. (Frith recently had his band Henry Cow split, Laswell and Maher were both in Material at the time.)

The album is a compilation of recordings made at Martin Bisi's OAO studio in Brooklyn, New York City in June 1981, and live recordings taken from the April 1981 Paris concerts. The '93 CD version contains a few more tracks than the original '81 release, from different live performances.

The band broke up shortly after — although all three continued to collaborate afterwards. Frith and Laswell reformed Massacre in 1998 with drummer Charles Hayward, and released four more albums. However, the '98 ‘Funny Valentine’ is already much mellower in sound, and Laswell was by then in habit of putting dub-ambient on all his records.

Recently watched the premiere of season 3, episode 1 of the animated show, People Watching on YouTube and this emotional heartbreaker was just pulling the tears straight out of me. I'm such a softy sometimes. Enjoy.

Usually the previous album ‘Unquestionable Presence’ is cited as a landmark in mixing jazz with metal and in the evolution of tech-death. But at least to me, it's difficult to hear jazz in there compared to ‘Elements’.

After this album the band broke up in 1994 until a live performance in 2006 and the new album ‘Jupiter’ in 2010.

The US promotional pressing of this 12" single was sent out to radio stations and media offices in the US in December 1985, before the retail release, and was never fully released.

This version has a better mix with proper bass, compared to the original — at least among YouTube uploads.

When people talk about the Led Zeppelin sound, they often start with power: volume, weight, excess. But a more revealing way to understand the band is through the guitars of Jimmy Page, not as objects, but as decisions. Each instrument Page picked marked a shift in language, ambition, and identity. Follow those choices closely enough, and the story of Led Zeppelin unfolds on its own.

There's also an instrumental version.
