Talisman (en.wikipedia.org)

One of my favorite board games!

  • The game is never-ending (if you so choose). The cards are reshuffled and taken back in the game once they have been used
  • You can become all-mighty if you want to
  • Can have many different endings (options are up to the players)
  • Has lots of addons, giving new areas, cards, player characters, functions and endings
  • Has a rather cheap (base) game in Steam as well
  • Lots of stuff to remember what you can do, once you have spells and items and followers

I've played the physical and digital versions a couple times and I couldn't stand the game either way. It is pure random madness that can take hours to end because of it. I can only assume it appeals to people who either like highly random games or just LOVE rolling dice.

Talisman actually joined my extremely short list of banned games.

Does the randomness come from the cards? Could you somehow pull cards from a certain pool to take away some extra randomness?

Also - the game length can be manipulated. Having a maximum turns or giving extra stats/items in the beginning etc. Creativism and experimentation can make the game more fun ๐Ÿ˜„

I played the steam version once with a mate who was into it. It's horrible. Time-consuming mess, bad design in so many instances. If you can: Avoid it.

Sorry to be so harsh about a game you like, but it brings out horrible memories.

Haha no worries!
My friends say the same and it's fine. I don't have much of an opinion of my own about it but it's better than no game I think ๐Ÿ˜„

And, well, it has other digital opportunities as well, such as in Tabletop Simulator.

Judging by the comments in this thread its seems to be pretty polarizing. That fits pretty well with how my friend loved it when we played it. But I think he played the physical copy before, so maybe he had good memories of playing it.

What do you like about it? I liked the concept when my friend told me about it, otherwise I would not have tried it, but the reality of it was just me randomly dying and having to restart while my friend got insanely powerful.

Wouldn't have tried the game all by myself at least! Friends introduced it and it was cool that way.

I don't think I mind dying in the game but it can become a problem if someone takes your items from where you died while you roll for a new character...your chances become much smaller to go back fast to the end-game.

Yeah i have to agree. The physical boardgame is a lot of fun but it does not translate at all in the steam version. Especially since there is no option to save the often very lengthy multiplayer matches.

Talisman is my favorite board game! I own all the expansions for the most recent printing.

If anyone wants to try it, just remember its an older game that isn't meant to be balanced. The feel is more like a fantasy quest with highly random elements, or a party game where fortunes can reverse quickly. There are strategies you can use to win consistently, but the game is more enjoyable if you take it as a story rather than something to be optimized.

(And if that isn't your thing, that's ok)

Yeah, and not every game or story is about winning (at least 100%).
Some stories can be intriguing especially because of some loss, and if you manage to come back afterwards.
