Wtf. I just switched...
I love how these data breach articles never go into what the next step are that someone should/could do to protect themselves, or what the company is doing now to make sure customers are protected, and possibly compensated for any potentially repercussions of said breach.
Also who is ultimately liable for the exposure of said information, and as a customer could I ask a company to delete all identifiable information on me while still maintaining an account?
I had my ID stolen once upon a time, had a credit card opened in my name and the whole bit. The bank that had this fraudulent card opened on me was no help, I was forced to figure out how to close it and pay it off. It was suggested to me to get a credit lock put on myself, worst mistake ever it made my financial life hell for the next few years even though whoever stole my identity had probably already tossed it out. My suggestion is watch your credit, do not pay a company to watch it all they do is take your money and laugh at you. Change your passwords, even if you use biometrics to log in with apps change your passwords; my suggestion get a password manager, I was using Apple’s password manager but than the boycott started happening so I moved 1Password earlier this year I started moving all my stuff to self hosted things and have started using Vaultwarden. Have your bank email you every time there is a transaction that happens with your account, sure it can get annoying but I found out I had a few stupid recurring charges that have now been stopped.
This one may hurt but change your email address; I personally have a different email address for everything I signup for, at first I went with Proton but I found out some of their politics did not really align with mine so I was forced to find another option. The company that hosts my blog/domain also has an unlimited emails package so I get very little spam almost nothing. I am sure you could go as far as change your phone number, I did not but I did look into getting a prepaid phone that would forward calls to my phone and block the ones I did not want but changed that plan when I found out that I could block unknown numbers and send them straight to voicemail and block unknown texts sending them to junk mail. I get very few spam/fraud phone calls now.
I stopped using Google services (minus youtube) and the occasional gmail account I will spin up to tell a company junk mail via Canada Post that “this person is dead and I would appreciate not getting mail for them again.” I use a pihole setup on my network as I understand it AdGuard or whatever the pihole alternative is is good some say better but I have stuck with pihole. I am worthless to advertisers, spammers, and scammers. Do you need to do as much as me? No, I went further than what most people reasonably should it was heck trying to get security clearance for my job several years back, but that was solely on part of the credit lock which I firmly suggest against.
What I do suggest is change your email, get a password manager hosted, or self hosted, and watch your credit. Borrowell.com is where I watch mine but remember use a new email account that does not forward to your main email(s) as you will get so much spam, and setup a pihole or something to block trackers and ads.
