Easy to forget how the Hindenburg government and its Weimer successor were as enthusiastic about murdering Communists as their Nazi successors. Also, how the subsequent West German government was enthusiastic about arresting, torturing, and executing anyone believed to be a communist sympathizer or organizer. Also, how the Christian Democrats that took control of East Germany following the collapse of the USSR were zealous in their campaign to uproot and abolish any kind of German Communist Party, going so far as to ban the DKP from running as recently as 2021.

When you hear the argument about how liberal governments are freer, fairer, and more egalitarian than their fascist peers, it's easy to forget how that tolerance for intolerance only seems to extend rightward. When these liberal parties flounder, it always ends up being due to leftists failing to come to their rescue, despite these same liberals out gunning for leftists in the years prior.
