they might've been feeding their babies through a hole in the tree where i assume the nest is. kept poking their head in and even went inside a few times!

I have several red-bellied woodpeckers in my neighborhood, last year one pair had a couple of chicks and I got to watch them grow into adults. They love peanuts and will fight other birds for them at the feeder.
