Met him when I was 11 and he was 15. He was the tough kid at school but always nice to me and stood up for younger kids. This experience was so formative, I based a lot of my personality around him.

Tried messaging him again in December but he deleted his account before reading it. Later found out he got arrested for trying to rob his neighbour's house and people were calling him a "smackhead" / heroin addict.

I always knew he was kind of a rebel but I never thought he'd end up like that.

Former heroin addict here.

The one thing we all have in common is that we are in some kind of pain that we are trying to escape—it is a painkiller after all. What people don’t know when they start is that it also kills all feelings of remorse or decency because you can’t feel the pain of embarrassment or social expectations. It is a sneaky high that doesn’t hook you at first, and the moment you wake up sick, you’re already on the wagon.

I’m sorry your friend wound up doing that, and I’m sorry for how it affected you. I hope you get to the point where you can integrate the awareness that addicts of hard drugs are victims of a chemical that is changing their entire perception of reality sometimes, and they often don’t understand what is really going on until the consequences become severe. I hope your friend gets the help they need to see what is happening to them and how to stop the damage.

I am looking for mods!

1. The "good" part of our community means we are pro-empathy and anti-harassment. However, we don't intend to make this a "safe space" where everyone has to be a saint. Sh*t happens, and life is messy. That's why we get things off our chests.

2. Bigotry is not allowed. That includes racism, sexism, ableism, homophobia, transphobia, xenophobia, and religiophobia. (If you want to vent about religion, that's fine; but religion is not inherently evil.)

3. Frustrated, venting, or angry posts are still welcome.

4. Posts and comments that bait, threaten, or incite harassment are not allowed.

5. If anyone offers mental, medical, or professional advice here, please remember to take it with a grain of salt. Seek out real professionals if needed.
