I'm torn between "Hahaha, get wreckt" and "oh god this is means that there's demand and it's going to justify the insane investment in infrastructure buildout even longer"

There's demand because it's basically free right now. Once the real cost starts being passed down to the end users that demand will almost entirely dry up. Demand doesn't mean it's worth the actual cost
Basically everyone I know that uses it, except for a few weirdos, doesn't really care. They see it as a novelty still, not a legit product.
Getting the computer to say funny things and generate funny images is not a way to sustain the largest economic sector ever conceived. Even if it succeeded in "replacing 80% of human workers" you've now destroyed the economy.
If had taken a half minute to think about it I'd likely have come to the same conclusion or similar.
is AI being adopted by the masses in spite of it all? Is the AI adoption being done by the corporations looking to put their own custom wrapper on a chapgpt instance just to keep up w the Jones's? Or is it just cooking some books?
