I'm testing out the SecureBlue distro, the concept is very cool and I am still learning my ways around it. Anyhow, SecureBlue came with its own hardened browser: Trivalent. It is great and coming from GrapheneOS on my phone, this feels like at home.

But... how the heck do you force a wifi portal to appear when you connect to pubic wifis like malls and hotels? I understand public wifi is not safe but thats another problem. I just want to know how to get online while travelling.

What i tried:

  1. go to 1.1.1.1 or neverssl.com like some sites suggested. Nothing happens

  2. use my phone wifi hotspot to download firefox. Then unharden firefox via some flags (otherwise firefox wouldnt run). Finally, connect to hotel wifi and use firefox to open the login portal.

  3. on sway, obviously nothing happened because its so minimal. .But on the gnome flavor, you can see a pop up to sign in. .On a normal distro, clicking that would open the portal. On this one, it doesnt work.

Any other suggestions? Some dns setting ? Unharden trivalent?

I understand you can use whatever browser you want on Linux, but because Trivalent is hardened i prefer to use just one. Like on Graphene with Vanadium.

Appreciate any inputs.

The login portal is hosted on the private network and known by the private network's DNS service. By bypassing the DNS server(s) provided by the hotel's network and using your own DNS you cannot obtain the login portal. That is unless you know the address of the portal and can enter it manually.

Reference your threat model, but the quick fix here is to connect without custom DNS or VPN, complete the login portal, and then change DNS settings/activate VPN.

I found the following on their Discord:

  1. try going to neverssl.com
  2. try ujust dns-selector reset, then try neverssl.com again
  3. try a non-Trivalent browser (e.g. Epiphany), then try neverssl.com again

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Linux is a family of open source Unix-like operating systems based on the Linux kernel, an operating system kernel first released on September 17, 1991 by Linus Torvalds. Linux is typically packaged in a Linux distribution (or distro for short).

Distributions include the Linux kernel and supporting system software and libraries, many of which are provided by the GNU Project. Many Linux distributions use the word "Linux" in their name, but the Free Software Foundation uses the name GNU/Linux to emphasize the importance of GNU software, causing some controversy.
