Gabe Newell Found "Unknown Life" 9,100m Deep

#steam #gabenewell #ocean

Gabe Newell, the visionary behind Steam and Valve, is quietly leading one of the most ambitious scientific expeditions in history through his marine research organization, Inkfish. By commissioning a billion-dollar fleet that includes the 111-meter flagship Leviathan and the newly commissioned superyacht Draak, Newell has enabled researchers to conduct deep-sea surveys in the Izu-Ogasawara and Japan trenches at depths exceeding 9,000 meters. This video explores the groundbreaking April 2026 data drop that cataloged 108 distinct life forms in the Hadal zone, including mysterious carnivorous sponges, record-breaking snailfish, and an unidentified organism so bizarre that the global scientific community cannot reach a consensus on its classification. As we uncover these alien-like species living in a world shaped by tectonic catastrophes, we reveal the profound engineering and scientific obsession required to map the final frontier on Earth.

Tried to listen to this video but the narrators voice is almost unbearable to listen to for more than 2 minutes. And additionally I can't deal with how unstructured the video is. Am I becoming old?

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 1 day ago

No. I also have a little bit of hard time listening to the way and voice he talks. I also speed up video a bit too. In fact I watch most narrated documentations at a faster rate. Doesn't help with the way he talks and the voice, but at least the speed problem is solved.

it's always "a billionaire did a thing", not "a billionaire paid some people to do a thing".

Funny how that works.

My Billionaire Capitalist Is Also a Marine Biologist isn't the weirdest anime title I've seen in the last five minutes, but is still not something I expected today.

Love some billionaires under water. Even better when they are kept there.

Gabe plays Subnautica in real life.

[-] codexarcanum@lemmy.dbzer0.com 10 points 2 days ago

So Gaben is also the Good Submarine Billionaire too, I guess? I mean, good on him for loaning his super-yacht and Leviathan submarine (IRL subnautica indeed) out to do some science.

From what I remember of when the news of his boat's creation was shared here on the threadi/fediverse, he expressly had it designed and built for this purpose. It's nice to get some news about it accomplishing something other than making him richer, for sure.
