I recently heard that the nerves controlling the pinkie and ring finger are intertwined to the degree that it's almost impossible for most people to move the pinkie and ring fingers without the other. Does it count as "independent" if one twitches while the other does the real moving? I think I may finally be special!

It's not nerves, but ligaments and tendons that are linked, in basic terms.

One can feel/see this my making a fist with the ring finger extended then manipulating it with the other hand. Or having some one else gently manipulate it

Ring finger and middle finger isn't it? If you place your hand on a flat surface and tuck your middle finger under itself your ring finger has issues moving.

Place your hand palm down on a flat surface (like a table).

Put your middle finger under your palm, leaving your other fingers outstretched. (Kind of like throwing the heavy metal horns, but with only the middle finger tucked in)

You can probably lift your index finger or pinkie finger up alone no problem. Lifting your ring finger alone will probably be hard, if not impossible, as long as you keep your middle finger tucked under your palm.

Curling either my pinkie or my middle finger also causes my ring finger to curl. Curling my ring finger doesn't affect my pinkie or middle finger, though.

To learn to play guitar I had to get my fingers to move more independently. Difficult at first but you can do it. I assume it is similar for other stringed instruments.

I’m gonna say no, it doesn’t count. Mainly cos I can move one with just a twitch from the other and I’m not special at all.

I have no issues moving any single finger independently. I just tested it. Maybe because I've played guitar, maybe because I'm a rock climber, or maybe I'm just a freak of nature. Or... maybe this is one of those Facebook claims that only 2% of people can do it, when really it's just a normal thing that everyone can do.

It was a science podcast that links sources. I'll go back and see where they got it from.

Then I guess I'm special. Neato!

I can’t pin my pinky down with my thumb to make a 3. It’s impossible for me to straighten my other fingers

Sibling! To make three I use the ok symbol.

The only way! I always wondered what’s different about my hand/wrist

[-] Steinawitz@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

This happens with my left hand but I can make a 'normal' three with my right hand.
