I'm loving Sync so far. I used the official reddit app ever since I was on Reddit. I sure was missing out.

I saw on the left bar there's two options "Remove ads" and "Sync Ultra". What's the difference? I understand ultra is a subscription that gets ad free browsing and more. However, remove ads looks to be a single purchase "add-on", i.e. no subscription. Is that the case? That would be nice down the line when sync for lemmy gets an official stable release.

There's also a price difference. Ultra is 1.99$/mo or 16.99$/yr, and remove ads is 12.99$.

Remove ads is 22 euros here. That's a massive difference from the old app. Almost ten times more I believe?

Crying in $34 Aussie dollaydoos.

A bit of a surprise; I know I was lucky to get the old Sync pro app for under $2 a decade ago, but wow.

[-] solrecon@lemmy.world 17 points 1 year ago

It's unfortunate that the price is up, but it's better than spending for a subscription for ad removal.

[-] AngrilyEatingMuffins@kbin.social 14 points 1 year ago

Is it better than just, you know, not using sync? This isn’t Reddit. There aren’t ads here.

[-] solrecon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I understand. I was using liftoff and that was pretty good for me (still have it as a backup). I also tried jebora and connect. Sync is definitely the most polished, even in beta. I'm not going to remove ads until I know I want to stick with sync, but it definitely feels like I'm headed that way.

Lemmy still has a lot less users than reddit. The dev can't rely on tens of thousands of users to buy the app for $1 each. I think he's doing a great job with this app and I don't mind supporting him.

Also, the addition of Sync to the lemmy ecosystem will draw a ton of new people in and help grow the platform.

I understand that I got a magnificent deal on Reddit Sync - I think it was on sale at the time.

I was ready to happily drop $15 on the ad free, but this is more than double that.

The pool of people willing to buy an app for Lemmy is a lot smaller than Reddit, so it makes sense to jack up the price.

[-] Zoldyck@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

Fair enough. It's still a lot of money though.

[-] ericisshort@lemmy.world 8 points 1 year ago

Is it though? It’s the price of a meal at a moderately priced restaurant or less than 2 months subscription of a streaming service, and you only ever have to pay for it once.

[-] AngrilyEatingMuffins@kbin.social 11 points 1 year ago

Considering it’s removing something it added in the first place? Yes

[-] ericisshort@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Ok, but how is that different from any other ad-supported media?

Because this one is built on the back of an anticapitalist project.

[-] Rossel@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 year ago

How is Lemmy an "anticapitalist project". I know the devs political orientation, but tech is tech, not really politically aligned by itself.
Besides, if it were anticapitalist, they should not have used the GPLv3 as their license, as it explicitly allows third parties to profit off the project.

My question is, what costs are associated with it? The app was essentially built, the dev needed to make some changes and link to the new API which should be free now? Generally curious, because I previously paid $3 for the pro app on Reddit.

[-] redcalcium@lemmy.institute 5 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Well, let's just do the math: the original pro version has over 100,000 downloads over it's 10 years of life. At $3, that means the dev earn at least $300,000 over 10 years, minus 30% play store fee. Let's say they earn at least $27,000 per year, which is almost twice the minimum wage at the very least.

Now lets do the math for Lemmy version: some metrics say we have 1 million users. Let's assume 10% of them are active users (100,000), and among those active users, lets assume 10% of them (10,000) buy Sync for Lemmy at $3 one time purchase (a very generous estimate). This means the dev will get $27,000 (after 30% cut from play store) from those users, ever. With this amount of money, the dev will need to earn their living somewhere else and abandon their app after a year.

[-] 1019throw@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I assume the dev didn't just make the app and think he can just retire, it was just one income stream for other stuff they develop and sell, but point taken.

[-] Deemo@bookwormstory.social 14 points 1 year ago

Its a 4x price increase Sync pro for reddit was about $4 (USD), sync for lemmy is $22 to remove ads

Ah meant I meant 5x (bad math strikes again 😓)

[-] Swarfega@lemm.ee 7 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

Strange. I paid £12.99
€22 is £18.90

[-] Spendies@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I bought Sync pro for $2 in 2013, but I assume it went up significantly in more recent years.

[-] forgotaboutlaye@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago

Yeah a bit steep - I'm hoping it's a bad calculation. OP said it's 12.99$, and other's have said 19.99$, so I have no idea where EUR22 comes from.

[-] alianne@lemmy.world 24 points 1 year ago

If you click on Sync Ultra in the left bar menu, it gives a list of everything currently included as well as a few features coming at a later time:

[-] solrecon@lemmy.world 10 points 1 year ago

Ultra sounds interesting for sure, but I'm not sure it's worth it. I might try 1 month later on. I think it's just because lemmy is smaller than reddit (for now :)) which makes these features less used, at least in the short term. Who knows, maybe in a couple years, it will be a no brainer.

[-] alianne@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I paid to remove ads immediately (which is also what I did with Sync for Reddit), but I'm also waiting to purchase Ultra to see if it gains any must-have features. The app is already great in its completely free version so anything else will just be cherries on top.

[-] grabyourmotherskeys@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

I'm doing it up support the dev. $2 a month CDN is a pretty small price to pay to support an app I use constantly! :)

[-] RanchOnPancakes@lemmy.world 14 points 1 year ago

Remove ads does exactly that and only that. Ultra has additional features. I don't have a link to what they are though. maybe someone else has that for you.

[-] solrecon@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

That's great that it's a one time removal of ads. I guess it kind of confused me that there were two separate options for removing ads, but I'm grateful.

[-] Razp@lemm.ee 12 points 1 year ago

Remove ads is a one time purchase that removes ads. Forever.

Ultra is a subscription service

[-] solrecon@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

I guess the reason I was confused is because typically there is no one time removal and everything is just a subscription. I appreciate that, at least for removing ads. The features in ultra are interesting but not worth it right now.

[-] kaput@jlai.lu 8 points 1 year ago

You guys have ads? I just started on lemmy and tried jerboa and connect for now.
What is so good about sync ?

[-] dreamfall@lemmy.world 18 points 1 year ago

Stylish looking app with smooth scrolling and so many great browsing options.

[-] heartfelthumburger@sopuli.xyz 17 points 1 year ago

Sync for Reddit was a hugely popular app before reddit practically shut down their api. I used it and missed it a lot, so glad to see it's gotten new life as a lemmy app.

[-] twistypencil@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I always used RIF, it was good. Any idea if that will be redone?

[-] EvilColeslaw@kbin.social 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

The developer, TalkLittle, has made another app but it's for Tildes instead of Lemmy or Kbin. It's invite -only so quite low population even compared to Fediverse instances. Plus iirc it's only text. No images, no video, etc

[-] twistypencil@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Huh, thanks for the info. I used RIF for years, didn't even know Apollo existed, so I guess I'll try sync, if I can get Aurora to unban me

[-] EvilColeslaw@kbin.social 2 points 1 year ago

Hi there! Looks like you linked to a Lemmy community using a URL instead of its name, which doesn't work well for people on different instances. Try fixing it like this: !boostforlemmy@lemmy.world

[-] ElBarto@lzrprt.sbs 9 points 1 year ago

Of all the android apps I tried and I tried them all, this is the smoothest feeling of them all, it's visually nice and the dev is highly dedicated to the app which you can feel using it.

I was using connect for the last week and I really liked that app, but Sync just feels better to me.

[-] dehydratedbagel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

I haven't seen a single ad or placeholder in Sync. Are they yet to be implemented?

[-] seacocker@lemmy.world 6 points 1 year ago

I just view Ultra to be covering the costs of continued development and server for cloud backup. It was a simple choice for me.
