Akala ko naman may gumawa na ng PH-centric instance. HAHAHAHA!

Gagawa pa naman sana ako ng account dun had it been the case (not that I'm making it my main, but who knows).

u/clock_age brought up the topic on the previous RD thread of getting more redditors to come here via pinned post at r/PH, which got me thinking. Maybe we should try revisiting the AMA commitments we received that never materialized, and get them to do it here on Lemmy now that they're less busy?

Leni Robredo, Ka Leody, Chel Diokno, and Risa Hontiveros were some of the ones who said "yes" but never got back to us after as the election got nearer. Their appearance here would not only attract redditors in droves but also put this place on the Lemmy map for being the first AMA (or "Lemmy Ask You" if you will).

Edit: LPUB = Lemmy Pick Ur Brain? lol

[-] theyawner@lemmy.world 5 points 1 year ago

While I would love to have more people in here, I personally feel like it might be more important to establish and reinforce what kind of culture we want to foster here; now that we have a newer canvass. There are some aspects of reddit culture that has come to annoy me and it's grating how I'm seeing more of the same on some parts of Lemmy. I can't quite put it into words, but r/ph felt exhausting these past years.

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I think there's already a budding culture here, born out of our weariness of what Reddit (and r/ph specifically) has become. However, since everyone of us has a slightly different idea what that culture is, it's a good idea to codify it.

If I must put it into words, I think it's like a combination of r/casualph and r/ph, perhaps with a heavier bias towards r/casualph from what I've observed. However, please take my words with a huge fistful of salt as I've never been a regular in r/casualph and have only been a lurker in r/ph.

[-] willnever_fadeaway@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

would be good engagement, I agree. But how will we have the newcomers want to stay here?

[-] decadentrebel@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

That's a good point. We had like 100+ members posting each day in the first two weeks and once Reddit reopened, they hightailed it out of here.

I guess the "AMA" is to draw attention to the community (not only from redditors but media mileage considering that Esquire and other rags like to craft articles from those) and get newer people to see it first and be aware that it exists. We'll worry about them staying later. All I know is, more users means higher chances of posts and higher chances of engagement.

[-] tahann@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I don't think it's a good idea to worry about retention later. If people are serious about anything worth doing, there should be plans.

Maybe we should figure out how this will be different from r/ph. If it's just the same, what's the benefit of migrating when you can get the same stuff from r/ph? Unless there's a clear answer to that, it will be hard to attract others.

Aside from a pinned post there, those who are still active there might want to directly target members who can create content or encourage engagements here. Members with bigger following or influence that can help attract others are good starting points. If you create interesting contents for them here (not available there), they might join, but of course everyone is motivated differently so learning more about them is important before you can influence them.

How this community is envisioned to be will affect the plans for retention of members. Aside from interesting contents, there should a certain way to treat newcomers to encourage engagement. I read somewhere that the insensitivity of old members keeps new members away. A group effort on a how to behave is needed.

I think this is a complicated project that deserves its own thread. Since this is a community effort, we should hear from other members as well.

[-] tahann@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

If you would allow me to pick your brain... How different or the same do you want this from r/ph? Is it just the number of members or engagement? How about the content? Do you miss insights from specific members?

Break it down, yo! (May sapi na naman ako.)

[-] decadentrebel@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

This place is kind of like r/PH when I first got there in 2016 but isn't as intimidating because there's a healthy balance of some r/CasualPH to not make it too serious or political. I like that.

More posts in the vein of why migrating abroad isn't as cracked up as everyone thinks and less about dramarama sa hapon like being your parent's insurance plan.

[-] bathalumang_peppa@lemmy.world 1 points 1 year ago

Hopefully with the release of other polished apps, there'll be an influx of active users here?

As much as I love FOSS, I admit na hindi ganoon kaganda experience ko with other lemmy apps (until Sync) and that's why I don't login that much. A lot of redditors, I assume, browse through phones at kung hindi ganoon ka-smooth experience with the app they're using, matuturn-off talaga yung iba to use lemmy. On the other hand, we need more engagement here not just by posting but commenting and having a discussion as well.

[-] starscar12@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago

Based on the data I've seen on r/Philippines (before I left the mod team), the majority of views are from mobile apps. The comments in !philippines@lemmy.world's daily discussion thread is just a speck compared to what r/Philippines has.

Man am I really not inspired to work recently. I mean, I do my work, just not driven to actually "work hard". Yeah, I know I'm a lazy bum and I'm working because it pays the bills, primarily. But man, it's like all I do now is to work eat and sleep. If this really is the routine of life then I'd rather just let go of it all. What an unwelcoming society this is. Kills interests and creativity and forces people down a path like forcing a square peg through a round hole. Sometimes I envy the people who have completely let go of their sanity and gave in to their "crazy". Thinking and trying to fit in somehow is such a pain. Survival hurts.

[-] willnever_fadeaway@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago

Wala na bang Tomi? Or hindi lang sya nai-stock sa grocery? Ilang buwan ko na sya hinahanap sa grocery, laging walang stock. 😔

Tomi corn snack

[-] Periwinkledot@lemmy.world 3 points 1 year ago

Meron pa naman ako nakikita sa Puregold.

[-] ako946659661@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Pwede na ba magdala ng reusable bag sa Puregold? Hina-harang kasi sya dati. 😔

[-] Periwinkledot@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Sa malapit samin pwede naman esp pag Wednesdays. (Province pala yung branch kaya may plastic bags pa rin sila).

[-] jerieljan@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 year ago

I usually find these nowadays at a 7-11 but I realized you're right, it's a lot harder to find and might be gone.

I hope not, I loved this when I was a kid.

[-] monknonoke@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago

Nakita ni mama at tita ang itty bitty tattoo ko and they already had this horrified expression. As usual, I just shrug those kinds of reactions off. With all due respect, not your body.

What does the tattoo mean? Lol, I just like it, there's seriously no deep meaning 😆 I just wanted to experience getting a tattoo and I didn't pick anything I'd regret in the future. Yung isa pa nga based sa random suggestion nung isang redditor dati.

And they definitely haven't seen the bigger one or know my future plans of wanting to get a bigger one than that hehehe. The body is a canvas and I want to put some art in it. What if I get exiled? How exciting. Chz.

Tapos ang lala daw ng tan line at ang itim ko na (ibang tao naman 'to). Yeah, that's what happens kapag pabalik-balik ka sa beach doing fun activities. Next location ko sa bundok naman, then back to the ocean 🤔

Way younger me would be insecure and stop all of those. Mas maganda maputi, mas malinis walang eme, mas ok puro cardio lang bc gaining muscles is for men and insert fear of looking too masculine ganon. There's also the obsession of losing weight, too.

It's nice not to mind everything and just do what you want. Nung nagawa ko yung gusto I find that whatever insecurities I had wala na kasi masaya na ako. Who cares? I got things to do and places to be. Ako naman din bahala if I'm going to put weight in their words or not. I like to think my judgement has gotten better, at least.

I should definitely invest in more sun protective clothes, tho. Mahirap na ma-sunburn. I also like my tan and tan lines. It reminds me of fun and peacefulness that I experienced. God forbid I think of that as an ugly thing.

It's just me. I'm just Ken. You are kenough.

Good morning Philippines!

Meron bang instance na di nagdedefederate ng ibang instances and hindi rin na-dedefederate ng bigger instances?

It's so annoying na yung mga communities na finfollow ko are in various instances that have defederated each other.

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 3 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

You can use this list to determine which instance blocks the least instances (BI close to zero), and at the same time, blocked by the least number of instances (BB close to zero).

A value of BI close to zero that may indicate that the instance admins use defederation as a last resort. At the same time, a value of BB close to zero could indicate a trusted instance. You can then inspect the instance's instances page (such as this one for lemm.ee) to see which instances it blocks.

There's also this tool that shows you which instances are federated or blocked from one another.

I say after all that though, that lemm.ee is a good place. However, sh.itjust.works is notable among the larger instances to refrain from blocking any instances.

[-] willnever_fadeaway@lemm.ee 2 points 1 year ago

I recommend lemm.ee too!

Masarap ba sa Mendokoro Ramen? May food truck pala dito until August 6.

Edit: Tried it. I liked it better than Nagi.

Today’s Ask PHlemmy: What’s an embarrassing phase you went through?

[-] willnever_fadeaway@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

The "wanting to get noticed" phase. Now I just don't care if I get noticed or not.

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 5 points 1 year ago

If being a weaboo wasn't embarrasing enough, I also went through the "hipster weaboo" phase. I rejected the likes of Naruto and Bleach and opting to watch the likes of Paranoia Agent, Serial Experiments Lain, and Paprika—the more ‘highbrow’ ones. Even the less artistic ones such as Welcome to the NHK, Aria (all three series), and Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, I picked up less because of how I enjoy it, but more about how “difficult it is for the mainstream” to get into.

Now, I think things have gotten better: I no longer care about the trash I watch, but I still avoid mainstream titles for different reasons (too shonen-y, too much lewd fanservice, focus on fight scenes, etc).

[-] decadentrebel@lemmy.world 4 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I really wish I got the chance to watch Evangelion, Serial Experiments Lain (ang cool pa naman nung keeb inspired by it), Ergo Proxy, and the likes when I was still into anime. Ngayon medyo mahirap na magsingit ng mga completed series sa schedule. I can only watch in a weekly episodic format.

[-] theyawner@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

It can be daunting as well, but participating in rewatch discussions has helped me delve into some of the older shows. I joined the Macross rewatch a few years back and it took us months to reach up until Delta. I saw most the shows in the list, but I might not have gone through Macross 7 just by myself. The only real problem though is the schedules for the post in order to properly participate in the discussions.

[-] megane_kun@lemm.ee 1 points 1 year ago* (last edited 1 year ago)

I kinda gave up on Evangelion because it's too much work. The rebuild is cool, but I think the original series (plus End of Evangelion) is a prerequisite to making sense of what the rebuild is offering to the viewer.

Serial Experiments Lain is just one season, but it requires you to pay attention (which is a common theme to these titles).

I didn't get to watch Ergo Proxy too, IDK why.

I think the fact that I wasn't really into the genre (and this happened during a time I was trying to explore what kinds of shows I'm into) made me burnt-out quickly.

Not only do those shows require close attention from the viewer, but I find that you can't watch a bunch of episodes in one sitting and “get it”. It has to percolate in your head for a time.

[-] 8rhn6t6s@lemmy.world 2 points 1 year ago

Napanood ko ergo proxy dahil nasa netflix hahaha same with eva. Both this year ko lang pinanood. Probably would not have watched if wala doon. Pero agree mejo wala rin ako na gets on both anime hahah

[-] ExploringLiterature@lemm.ee 4 points 1 year ago

Absolute people pleaser to a fault. I've had my pendulum period of adjustment (meaning I fluctuated between being too nice and being an asshole) over a couple of years ago. Glad to say that I'm at that Goldilocks spot of being courteous/tactful without being too much of a jerk (unless warranted).

Hindsight being 20/20, it was really painful to look back on just how much I bent my back over/hoops I had to jump through to just please people/avoid their displeasure. The rage upon finding out i was being duped/used is real, but I'm glad I had some sort of a support system to smooth out the rough edges of my temper. 0/10 would not let anyone go through this.

Remember: trashy peoples' opinion of you are a dime a dozen, and there are more than a dozen toxic people out there.

Choose wisely who you spend your fucks on.

An abandoned community for the Philippines and all things Filipino! 🇵🇭

Started out as a Reddit alternative during the blackout from Jun 12-21, 2023 with over 1k members in just a few days. Fizzled faster than the "I Didn't Do It" kid after a month until it became the internet's Centralia in less than a year.
