Coal, oil and gas businesses are desperate to distract, derail and delay the solution to our climate problem. That's why so many them are there at the conference.

Hope Cop28 sets their goal ambitiously. Fossil fuel companies are flush enough with cash. They can go play with carbon capture on their own and prove it works before we make any promises on it.

That's why they're so desperate to agree to a "phase down" and not a "phase out". Extraction increased but at a lower rate than demand increased? That could technically be a phase down. Extraction stayed the same emitted slightly less because of carbon capture? That could technically be a phase down.

They will not. COP28 is led by fossil fuel billionaires and oil executives. Their goal is to placate the public with the false message that everything is being taken care of and there is nothing to worry about.

COP28 is not a legitimate climate summit. It is a PR stunt for the fossil fuel industry with deadly deceptive messaging. We should not be posting articles about COP28 that aren't calling them out as fake.

I know its being led and run by oil company presidents. One can still hold false hope. Unlikely that some major promise will come tomorrow yet, they need to do better than just soapboxing for "carbon capture".

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
