If what they're saying is true, that it looked like they had to use so many resources to support the game it would fundamentally change them into a live services studio from a narrative driven single player studio, then I'm glad they took this decision.

And nothing of value was lost. Seriously, no one asked for this game to be online. Who gives a shit?

[-] dlpkl@lemmy.world 11 points 11 months ago

A lot of people did lol. Factions from TLOU was an amazing multiplayer mode. That, combined with the presumed quality of a potential MMO type game from them garnered a lot of hype. Just because you didn't ask for it or don't understand the anticipation doesn't mean there wasn't any.

I loved the last of us original multiplayer when it came out on PS3. I was actually very intrigued by this, it sucks that it's cancelled.

Well I'd love for an online game in a world crafted by naughty dog. No other online games really match their quality (maybe the division 2).

I'm happy with their decision. Their games have always been about a stellar single player story/experience.

It's refreshing to see a studio turn down a horde of cash to focus on their art.

Played the shit out of tlou multiplayer. It felt like something that got added to the game with little effort or creativity and it came out amazing. When TLOU2 was released I was saddened to hear that there would be no multiplayer yet but that it was coming. It didn't need to be much. It could have been the same multiplayer experience with some new maps. Uncharted3 and uncharted 4 multiplayer was great. The community really made the multiplayer what it was. That's where NickEh30 started making content I loved watching SanchoWest on YouTube going over some of his favorite plays.

Really sucks that companies get away with this "we'll finish out the game after the release" and there's no consequence. It was promised.

Aka- layoffs happened/are happening.

In ramping up to full production, the massive scope of our ambition became clear. To release and support The Last of Us Online we’d have to put all our studio resources behind supporting post launch content for years to come, severely impacting development on future single-player games. So, we had two paths in front of us: become a solely live service games studio or continue to focus on single-player narrative games that have defined Naughty Dog’s heritage.

No one asked for live service and I don’t think they mentioned it until now themselves.

If it was as good as they thought it was, they would make it work, sans live service.

[-] johntash@eviltoast.org 14 points 11 months ago

So many good multiplayer games weren't live service games and did just fine

Works better from a marketing and PR angle to spin it that it will be soo good that we need to focus everything on it vs. it’s gonna crash and burn like the first so let’s cut the losses now.

It had been mentioned previously. After Sony acquired Bungie, they put them to task on auditing a few other projects to figure out how to optimize the live service models of several upcoming games, with TLoU 2's multiplayer mode being among them. After Bungie's assessment was not overly favorable, the project was frozen (in news earlier this year) and now appears to have been officially canceled.

Damn. I was actually looking forward to it since I liked the factions mode on ps3. I wonder if people still play it

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

I can tell you that a lot of people are still playing it. I’ve tried just for the trophies as I ain’t interested in multiplayer.

[-] PieMePlenty@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Yeah I wasn't looking forward to a last of us live service game. I'm glad Sony didn't grab them by the balls and pushed more on this as I'm sure they'd jump at the opportunity to have a cash cow live service on their hands.

It did look like naughty dog was having a tough time with this one seeing how we've had no updates on it despite being in development for 4 years? Certainly didn't feel like their hart was in it. I hope this is a weight off their shoulders and now can focus on the next project.

But dead dead or mushroom zombie dead?

[-] Asudox@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Oh well. Even though it has been years since I played The last of us online and the normal game, it still kind of is sad seeing that online is going away. Was kind of fun.

[-] Pratai@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago* (last edited 11 months ago)

The only way TLoU would work as a successful online game is as a co-op. Nothing more.

PvP deathmatch belongs to Fortnite and crap like that.

[-] Renacles@discuss.tchncs.de 6 points 11 months ago

TLoU already had a multiplayer mode and it was great, they just had to do the same thing.

[-] bruhduh@lemmy.world 2 points 11 months ago

Sad that corporations don't do alot of split screen coop games like before, yeah there are solutions like universal split screen or nucleus coop but they are windows exclusive

[-] Dariusmiles2123@sh.itjust.works 1 points 11 months ago

I used to love coop games as a teenager. Now, as a family dad, it’d be more difficult, but I’m still playing a Way Out with my girlfriend.

I wonder if young people would still play coop now.

[-] bruhduh@lemmy.world 1 points 11 months ago

Xbox 360 rgh3 and ps4 hen is the best for it, calling friend or two over get some snacks, fire up console and play, that's what i like, try out streets of rogue, it has split screen coop for 4 people
