Is it weird that the only celebrity who's getting a public print of emissions is one that is despised by a political party for getting people out to vote?

I don't really care much about her, but this feels like "how do we get young people to not listen to this person... ah, let's go with emissions".

[-] thrawn@lemmy.world 36 points 10 months ago

I’m sure that doesn’t hurt, but I think it’s primarily from being #1 on that list of private jet emissions. Easiest to remember who #1 is and keep talking about that.

And well, she’s welcome to stop doing it. The republicans aren’t making her fly this much. I still think it’s a net positive if she inspires enough turnout to defeat Trump in 2024, but it’s still singularly her choice to send that plane up there and don’t think it’s that good for the environment.

Oh no. It's not good, and we should probably lambast the top 10 after the election. Right now, it just feels like the trap is communicating republican propaganda. We know how good they are for the environment, and the cost to the planet will be far greater...

Imagine spending ~$25,000 every time you want to go see or support your bf.

I balk at using a tank of petrol to go see my SO.

I won’t consider dating someone the next town over.

If we don't live in the same apartment building it's too far

From this, looks like an average US person carbon footprint is 16 tons of co2 per year, so this one relationship is about 35x more carbon intensive.

that should be a post of its own

We don’t need people to be allowed to be this rich. Is fucked.

[-] NewNewAccount@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

I don’t disagree but she’s not even a billionaire. There are much bigger problems than Taylor Swift.

[-] mosiacmango@lemm.ee 12 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

She actually is a billionaire after the era tour, but basically made her money via performing, not direct class warfare.

[-] crashoverride@lemmy.world 5 points 10 months ago

Let's not forget where she started from, though. She started in the clouds

[-] Tikiporch@lemmy.world 8 points 10 months ago

How do they think the team is getting around? Compost powered catapult?

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 7 points 10 months ago

Wouldn’t he be flying with his sports team anyway? And wouldn’t she be traveling as part of her touring schedule anyway?

[-] iraq_lobster@slrpnk.net 5 points 10 months ago

they need to exchange love liquids once and a while

[-] andrewrgross@slrpnk.net 8 points 10 months ago

She can just fly first class in a regular commercial plane. Private flight is just stupid.

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 7 points 10 months ago

Commercial flight isn't too great either. High speed rail is a lot nicer.

Not to mention; having your own plane is cool, but is it cooler than having your own train?

[-] iraq_lobster@slrpnk.net 6 points 10 months ago

no offense, but what do you do to make it to your european tour ? take a balloon ? ..

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago

I would honestly rather spend two weeks in the bilge of a container ship than eight hours on a plane so maybe they could do that.

[-] iraq_lobster@slrpnk.net 1 points 10 months ago

well, there's this thing called ego; when people feel themselves like way important, they like to approach things in a more exotic/exclusive way, which only few people would have access to, to keep nurturing such ego. i wouldn't really like to spend my journey in the bilge of a ship, but i get your point and upon which i agree: commuting in all its forms sucks

[-] imposedsensation@lemmynsfw.com 4 points 10 months ago

Gotta admit, bilge of a container ship is pretty fucking exclusive...

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 2 points 10 months ago

Just me and the rats

[-] Uglyhead@lemmy.world 4 points 10 months ago

The TAy Tay Train. I can see it now.

[-] Semi-Hemi-Demigod@kbin.social 3 points 10 months ago

She'd have some cute overalls and one of those engineer's caps and a smudge of dirt on her face and suddenly every woman under 30 looks like that.

[-] weird_nugget@lemmy.world 3 points 10 months ago

"Love liquids" is the new shiny addition to my vocabulary for 2024.

[-] iraq_lobster@slrpnk.net 2 points 10 months ago

time on Lemmy well spent

[-] Xariphon@kbin.social 4 points 10 months ago

Damn, I knew she was full of hot air, but...

[-] iraq_lobster@slrpnk.net 5 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

Discussion of climate, how it is changing, activism around that, the politics, and the energy systems change we need in order to stabilize things.

As a starting point, the burning of fossil fuels, and to a lesser extent deforestation and release of methane are responsible for the warming in recent decades: Graph of temperature as observed with significant warming, and simulated without added greenhouse gases and other anthropogentic changes, which shows no significant warming

How much each change to the atmosphere has warmed the world: IPCC AR6 Figure 2 - Thee bar charts: first chart: how much each gas has warmed the world. About 1C of total warming. Second chart: about 1.5C of total warming from well-mixed greenhouse gases, offset by 0.4C of cooling from aerosols and negligible influence from changes to solar output, volcanoes, and internal variability. Third chart: about 1.25C of warming from CO2, 0.5C from methane, and a bunch more in small quantities from other gases. About 0.5C of cooling with large error bars from SO2.

Recommended actions to cut greenhouse gas emissions in the near future:
