Hi comrades, welcome to the Improvement Megathread! unity

I plan to post a new weekly megathread here every Sunday. I think Sunday is a good day to review the previous week and make some plans for the following week. If somebody else wants to post a new megathread anytime, just let me know.

Here are some ideas for discussion:

  • Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week?

Even if you did only 1 push-up, read 1 page, meditated for 1 minute, or touched 1 blade of grass, let us know about it. When it comes to making progress, everything counts. The most important thing is to make progress, no matter how small.

  • What would you like to do next week?
  • What aspect of life would you like to improve?
  • Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.
  • If you don't have a continuous streak, did you manage to abstain from something for a day or more?
  • Did you come across some useful information or resource that might help others?

Of course, this is not a definitive list. And feel free to make a separate post in the comm for any of these topics. This is just a megathread for all the stuff that you want to share but don't feel like making a new post.

Let me know if you have any suggestions.

My first goal of the year has been to cut back on sugar consumption. I'm still at the stage of becoming aware how much sugar is in the stuff I normally eat and figuring out what I can cut out or replace. The easiest target so far is obviously cutting back on snacks, but it's also gonna be hard because I love my baked treats.

Thanks again @moonlake@hexbear.net for linking me that sugar free reddit!

Been sticking to my japanese duolingo for a week now. Feels good because I'm absolutely atrocious at sticking with any self-improvement. I haven't really learned much yet because I've got basic phrases from over a decade of being a weeb, but just keeping at it feels nice.

I studied Japanese intensely for five months and most of it stuck with me years after, very worthy of your time.

Do you want to share something you've done in the previous week?

picked up drawing, socialized, cleaned up my place, working, getting tasks done sooner, read a long journal article, gettig a surprise in on useless liberals, at least had regular walks

What would you like to do next week?

Past job shit, I wanna practice drawing whenever I get the video g'me bangs, also regular and more exercise, reading more academic things, reading more literature, reading more everything

Do you have any streaks? For example, "sober for one day." Feel free to post your streak every day in this thread.

1 week and a day no video g'mes

I want to lose weight so this week I installed the Waistline app from f-droid for weight tracking & calorie counting and setup an indoor trainer with my bike so I can ride in the mornings. Good luck to everyone working on their goals!

I've been working on weightloss the past week. Been using Noom, but only as a calorie counter and weight tracking. I find the simple routine of weighing myself daily and tracking calories is mostly enough to eliminate poor eating habits. And reducing environmental triggers (like I can't have a bag of chips sitting on the counter and be looking at it all day-- it has to go out of sight)

Tried out some new recipes that I loved, most involving chickpeas or black olives. For now, eating intentionally during the week and openly during the weekend is working for me.

Sounds good, I like chickpeas and olives. Do you have any cool recipe to share?

Self Improvement

285 readers
30 users here now

A community which focusses on improving yourself. This can be in many different ways - from improving physical health or appearance, to improving mental health, creating better habits, overcoming addictions, etc.

While material circumstances beyond our control do govern much of our daily lives, people do have agency and choices to make, whether that is as "simple" as disciplining yourself to not doomscroll, to as complex as recreating yourself to have many different hobbies and habits.

This is not a place where all we do is talk about improving "productivity" (in a workplace context) and similar terms and harmful lifestyles like "grindset". Self-improvement here is intended to make you a generally better and happier person, as well as a better communist, and any other roles you may have in your life.

Rules and guidelines:

  1. Posts should be about self-improvement. This is obviously a wide category, and can range from advice, to finding resources, to self-posts about needing to improve in a certain area, or how you have improved, and many other things.

  1. Use content warnings when discussing difficult subjects.

  1. Do not make medical decisions solely because of a discussion you have had with any person here (e.g. whether to take or not take medications; diagnoses; etc.) as we do not vet people. All medical problems should be discussed with a real-life medical professional.

  1. Do not post harmful advice here. If this is seen, then please report it and we shall remove it. If you are unsure about whether it's precisely harmful advice or not but feel uneasy about it, please report it anyway.

  1. Do not insult other users and their lifestyles or their habits (unless they ask, I suppose). This is a place for self-improvement. Critique and discussion about a course of action is encouraged over shit-flinging. Don't talk down to people.
