When I was younger, that was something that I didn’t consider whatsoever. Epitome of soypoint-1

I kinda wish I could turn it off and on but that hasn’t seemed possible. Feels like I’m always reading into what used to just be slop and can’t really pinpoint when things changed 😅

Does this make sense?

It's a genuine loss to lose your ability to engage in popular media, because that's the type of common art everyone shares and enjoys. But it's not your fault. It's the common art that's being produced.

Remove All American Media And Culture From Your Life

Oh this looks great!! It gets so fucking tiresome being bathed in American 'culture' every day.

What's wrong with analyzing movies? That's half the fun of watching them

[-] Hohsia@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago

Nothing whatsoever, but I just wish I could turn the part in my brain that reads into them on/off

Saw top gun with people awhile back and really killed the vibe lol

[-] culpritus@hexbear.net 17 points 9 months ago

My partner refers to me as the 'ruinor' when it comes to watching slop. I've learned to at least hold my comments until after the show is over. The only way to turn it off for me is to not watch closely and intently. Basically the more invested I am in the world building, the worse it is.

They just don't make slop like they used to.

[-] Hohsia@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago

Where is my mindless slop 😔

The way I see it, a bad movie can still be worth watching if it provides an entertaining perspective on someone's point of view. Even bad films can be learning experiences.

Remember the first lesson of Movie Mindset: Movies are more real than real life.

I’ve become an insufferable media companion in much the same way.

I see all the plot devices, I see all the tropes, especially the harmful ones and those I disagree with perpetuating. I see all the bad faith arguments and egregious illogic..

It’s frustrating for everyone involved. Wish it wasn’t so, but.. when you realize there are indeed boogeymen, you see them in the shadows because that’s where they hang out.

[-] FourteenEyes@hexbear.net 12 points 9 months ago

I also dislike watching shallow garbage devoid of anything to say

[-] AlkaliMarxist@hexbear.net 10 points 9 months ago

I feel the same way, I don't mind though, I wouldn't trade media literacy for the ability to enjoy trash more.

[-] Ithorian@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago

Yup, it does kinda suck. As long as it isn't too offensive though a couple hits of the bowl and I can forget it as far as it happens.

[-] EllenKelly@hexbear.net 9 points 9 months ago

I swear half the time I watch a movie I start planning an essay about how it's CIA propaganda

I wantched beasts of no nation a while ago and was going mad yelling at my television... maybe one day I will write it, I took notes...

solidarity comrades, it's a blessing and a curse

[-] DayOfDoom@hexbear.net 8 points 9 months ago

No, I'm still watching anime harem shows with ZERO shame, but ONE HUNDRED percent media-literacy.

[-] the_itsb@hexbear.net 7 points 9 months ago

If you need/want to watch trash to participate in social groups you care about, maybe try looking at it through a ridiculous lens?

Two Old Queens is a comedy movie review podcast hosted by two (younger Gen X?) gay movie buffs, each with wildly different tastes, in search of the Gayest Movie Ever. They're judging this based on sincere categories (like Positive Representation of Homosexuality, Gay Characters Played by Gay Actors, Actual Gay Characters, How Likely Are You To Recommend This Movie to a Gay Person, etc) and silly categories (like Wigs, Titular Theme Song, Drag Inspiration, Themes of Mothers, etc), rated based on the whims of whoever is present for that episode. Most movies score very poorly because it's a homophobic world, but roasting them is fun.

I've been listening to the old free episodes lately, and they are a fucking delight. I could see it inspiring someone to make a similar silly rating system for how communist a movie is. Maybe that person is you!

!!! That reminds me of the YouTube channel evasive

She has LGBT+ people comment on some films with those kinds themes that didn’t age particularly well

[-] the_itsb@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago

Oh that sounds like a channel I would like!! Thanks for the rec 🥂

Had dreams… Two of ’em. Both had my father in ’em. It’s peculiar. I’m older now then he ever was by twenty years. So, in a sense, he’s the younger man. Anyway, the first one I don’t remember too well but, it was about meetin’ him in town somewheres and he give me some money. I think I lost it. The second one, it was like we was both back in older times and I was on horseback goin’ through the mountains of a night. Goin’ through this pass in the mountains. It was cold and there was snow on the ground and he rode past me and kept on goin’. Never said nothin’ goin’ by – just rode on past. And he had his blanket wrapped around him and his head down. When he rode past, I seen he was carryin’ fire in a horn the way people used to do, and I-I could see the horn from the light inside of it – about the color of the moon. And in the dream I knew that he was goin’ on ahead and he was fixin’ to make a fire somewhere out there in all that dark and all that cold. And I knew that whenever I got there, he’d be there. And then I woke up.

yeah after age like 20 i just became very nitpicky about plots and stuff

honestly the dumber it gets the more fun i have, after a certain point. you circle back around. daniel radcliffe being a fart machine? peak movies for me now.

[-] MF_COOM@hexbear.net 4 points 9 months ago

Yeah def. It's a good thing though. My experience with slop is richer, but my appetite for non-slop also increases because the sloppiness of the slop is so much more apparent.

[-] GalaxyBrain@hexbear.net 3 points 9 months ago

I pretty much always analyzed movies and TV more than most, as a little kid I was super interested in special effects and film making (this was before everything was cgi). I enjoy looking into things, I enjoy analyzing things, more than I enjoy being entertained by slop for an hour and totally forgetting it. I don't have the capability to just 'turn my mind off and enjoy something' and I don't want to. I like thinking about stuff a lot

[-] delirious_owl@discuss.online 3 points 9 months ago

This is why Born In Flames is my fav movie.

All media is politics. Most Hollywood movies just perpetuate awful norms of capitalism and imperialism. Its refreshing when those evils aren't just taken for granted

[-] sooper_dooper_roofer@hexbear.net 1 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

I don't watch things

except for some mystery/detective shows because they're interesting
