It's insane this man is so invested in blocking aid to allies and bashing NATO. This is after he already killed the border bill so he could campaign on it. So what's the incentive?

So obvious Putin has him by the nuts. America's most belligerent enemy. And "patriots" will line up in droves to help him ruin this country.

Romney: Now, I know that the shock jocks and online instigators have riled up many in the far reaches of my party. But if your position is being cheered by Vladimir Putin, it's time to reconsider your position.

Can someone ELI5 what's going on here?

Like Dems want to support Ukraine, Trump doesn't, some GOP do. Which way will it go though?

[-] bluGill@kbin.social 8 points 9 months ago

Hard to say. Some republican, support trump. Some see trump as president and so don't want to burn bridges. some are isolationists. All three would vote against aid but for difqerent reasons.

Then there are republicans who oppose the soviet union and see russia as the same thing. Then there are those who support the military industry. Those who suphort ukrain for other reasons. These would all vote for aid.

finally there are those who want toekeepithair job and are guessing what voters care about in november. Hard to say whatethese will do.

many are in more than one group. Some will chenge their mind. people are complex.

You are talking about the R's from a decade and a half ago. Those folks all got tossed. The R's are bought by Putin and everyone knows it. They are just too cowardly to admit it and thus arrange the deck chairs to give cover.

"Cowardly" is not correct. They are cowards, but they aren't doing this cowardly. If they did it in the open, they'd be stopped for being traitors. They hide and gaslight in order to progress their plans, not to hide their face.

This is intelligent self-preservation of evil cowards. Not cowardly behavior.

This very article proves you are wrong.

Dems and independents generally support aid to Ukraine. Most Republicans did until their cult leader told them to not support it. Some Republicans who are bucking the orange mobster are getting death threats. Most Republicans are scared shitless of the malignant orange narcissist. More are stepping away every day. First it was Liz Cheney, then Adam Kinzinger. Mitt Romney bailed. It looks like Oklahoma Sen. James Lankford might be out soon too. There is a massive list of Republicans who have had enough of the MAGA shit.

The Senate Republicans are breaking away from Trump's position by voting for the bill. It is expected that the Republican controlled Congress will side with Trump and block the bill.

[-] mars296@kbin.social 1 points 9 months ago

The House won't pass the bill.

[-] TigrisMorte@kbin.social 3 points 9 months ago

Only found their spine since they know the lay abouts in the House shall carry Pootie's instructions out.

[-] BossDj@lemm.ee 3 points 9 months ago

Republicans mission was already completed. Their media got to say that Trump is still president in control, that Republicans stopped a Dem wish vote that was easy on the border, and they are in control of all negotiations.

Now they can quietly pass whatever they want, even if it's exactly the same bill or worse and their media will either completely ignore it like it didn't happen or praise them for owning the Dems and getting everything they demand. This will vary by the exact level of stupidity of their company's viewership

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 2 points 9 months ago

I mean they have that luxury. They know that the house is going to stop it, or at least do enough to give them political cover. So excuse me if I think this might be strategic voting.

[-] paddirn@lemmy.world 3 points 9 months ago

I see where you're going, but wouldn't they want to appear loyal to Trump, even if they knew the House is going to shoot it down? It seems like in the current GOP, there's not really much upside for them bucking Cheetoh Jesus and the rest of the party on this, since loyalty to the demagogue is #1 above all else. Senate GOP seems at least slightly more responsible than the House (not by much, but in some situations they appear to at least try to work on bipartisan proposals), whereas the House is about as bad as daytime talk shows.
