I knew a DJ 20 years ago. He got most of his stuff by visiting thrift stores and markets where he would buy anything and everything on vinyl for a cheap price.
Most probably use a music service of some sort. I don’t DJ anymore, but these are a few of my old favorites:
- Promo Only: https://promoonly.com — This one has been around forever. Pricey but recommended.
- MP3PoolOnline: https://mp3poolonline.com
- Direct Music Service: https://www.directmusicservice.com
I’m sure there are a whole lot more too!
I second promo only. Never been a dj but used it to find new music. Pirated ofc.
Jungle/DnB DJ/Producer here for the past 10 years. Juno download for anything I purchase. Email promo lists for everything else.
A lot of label owners (including myself) will email out new promo weeks before the official release. If you can help promote their music, they will add you to their promo contact list. I’m at the point now where I don’t need to buy anymore music and get stuff before most folks.
I still buy music when there’s something I hear that I must have, but not so much anymore.
Happy to answer any questions
A little bit of everything, some vinyl, some CD rips, some pirated… But I don’t use any pools/subscriptions.
It also depends on what genre you’re playing out. I find better Jungle|Dnb on Juno download compared to Beatport. For House or Techno, Beatport is better imo
Soulseek is still alive and thriving
I would check out Beatport
