They’re wide for a purpose. Material was designed for mobile uses, where you really don’t want the difference between “create post” and “nuke everything” to be a few pixels.

It’s the same if you learn to spot Bootstrap.
When I started material ui everything looked so off, but thankfully I never really have to interact with frontend stuff
