"on the money" suggestions: Portishead, Blue Foundation, Thievery Corporation, Zero 7

Similar (new artists): Pretty Lights, Glass Animals, Polica

And Tricky, don't forget Tricky.

Portishead was where my mind went first.

Of the first bunch, turns out I already listen to 3 outta 4 of those, so solid suggestions!

I've heard of the newer few, but never taken to the time to really dig in & listen to their tunes, so thanks! I'll have to give them (and Blue Foundation) a listen!

Haha that makes sense, those first couple were the big early triphop artists. The second set of artists are triphop-adjacent and/or influenced by the first set.

Are you the type of person who thinks about what specifically they like about music? If so, please share and I can try to give you some other suggestions if you want

The genre is "trip hop" and there's a ton of it to explore. If you're into it, you have literally weeks worth of music to find!

As a life long fan of Massive Attack, Im afraid I cannot tell you of any other band I found to match (matter of taste of course) but there are plenty good ones with a similar vibe

  • Tricky (of course, ex member of massive Attack)
  • IAMX (first few albums)
  • Sneaker Pimps
  • The thievery corporation (earlier stuff is more similar)
  • Portishead (good but very very melancholic)
  • Goldfrapp (early stuff)
  • DJ shadow
  • Yonderboi (all three albums are amazing, less electronic but he has a very special sound)
  • Ancient Astronauts
  • Nightmares on Wax

So, some of these would actually sound similar, many just give me the same vibe... As in, if you are playing a list of all those, it should more or less blend together...

Similar/same vibe's all good in my book, so cheers!

good list— I’ll add:

  • the streets
  • RJD2
[-] exanime@lemmy.today 3 points 8 months ago

Second RJD2.... Have not heard "the streets" so thanks for that one!

Hooverphonic!

I'm not big on trip-hop but they're my favorite. A friend also loves DJ Shadow.

[-] some_guy@lemmy.sdf.org 7 points 8 months ago

Not really, no. They're like Nine Inch Nails in that there are a lot of bands that you might like if you like them. But they're also completely different and unique in ways that don't apply to a lot of successful artists.

Someone mentioned Boards of Canada. If you like Massive Attack, you might also like them. They're great! But they don't sound like Massive Attack, imo. Best I can recommend is the first album by Sneaker Pimps. That also doesn't sound at all like Massive Attack. MA is just in their own league.

Fever Ray comes to mind but I'm skeptical they're the same genre. But it does scratch that particular itch, for me at least.

I think I've heard of'em but not heard their music, will have to check'em out!

[-] reddig33@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Check the producer of the albums you like. Often they’ll produce similar works with other artists.

Check out DJ food, London Funk All Stars, Amorphous Androgenous, Wagonchrist, Kruder and Dorfmeister, Clark, Crumb, Boards of Canada, and a lot of artists on Ninja Tune

I love trip hop and downtempo and my friend took me to an Animal Collective concert… it was a nightmare :c

[-] MMNT@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

A little less known, awesome band is Sofa Surfers.

[-] ALostInquirer@lemm.ee 2 points 8 months ago

No kiddin', name got me lookin' and Valid Without Photo as well as The Plan are right in line with the sorta sound I dig from Massive Attack and the like!

[-] jqubed@lemmy.world 2 points 8 months ago

Great thread! One name I haven’t seen mentioned in here is Supreme Beings of Leisure. Their album 11i was my introduction to them.
