Imagine the crumbliest crackers to ever crack but they’re well meaning liberals, who have expressed interest in learning more about diversity and inclusion. You are tasked with helping open their eyes to the racism they are immersed in and benefit from without scaring them out the gate with the specter of communism. This would be accomplished with regular meetings, probably once a month in frequency. Reading is ideal but we all know nobody does the reading. What films or documentaries are a good place to start that help open the door but are palatable to libs? Stuff like 13th

Wonder if Get Out wouldn't be worth it? It's a great horror movie and it's pretty clever in it's symbolism at least to white people who are usually daft.

Oooh great suggestion! The Jordan Peele stuff is all pretty heavy on these themes

Black Kkklansman

Sorry to Bother You

And, not about racism per se, but Fidel the Untold Story does a great job at explaining the Cuban revolution, and I have successfully changed the mine of at least 1 (one) liberal with it.

It's kinda funny you would recommend Black Kkklansman together with Sorry to Bother You. Boots had some words about it.

Liberal pipe dream version of 1970s America. The police take down the KKK and then they fire the ONE racist cop for being racist, everyone lives happily ever after.

Good luck creating future Antifa Super Soldiers. Cant wait to storm DC with them.

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

More likely to find these knitting scarves for the super soldiers but anything to introduce folks to reality right

Well our troops need to stay warm during the nuclear winter

Logistics are the backbone of any fighting force, they’ll be doing their part and say “I’m from Rio de class-traitor and I say liberate them all”

Inglorious Basterds.

I am not joking.

[-] Assian_Candor@hexbear.net 4 points 8 months ago

I will have to rewatch it I haven’t seen it in a long time. What makes it a good pick in your view?

[-] TC_209@hexbear.net 9 points 8 months ago* (last edited 8 months ago)

I goes under-the-radar because it's seen as just a "modern action movie" when it's actually a dramatic film about the importance of combating fascism by any means necessary.

Plus, Hitler takes like 50 bullets to the dome.

EDIT: I should mention that IB did play a role in pushing me away from wishy-washy liberalism towards leftism.

Might be a bit much, but The Spook Who Sat By The Door is an amazing flick.

Judas and the Black Messaih while it pretty much just pays lipservice to Hampton's politics in the first few minutes, it's still a pretty good movie.

This speech by Malcom X is really good and a still relevant piece on how black movements are captured and defanged. Might be a bit much.😅

Silverton Seige is pretty good, but might be outside your scope. "Follows three young freedom fighters who seek refuge in a South African bank in Silverton, and take the bank and its customers hostage and would only release them in exchange for the release of Nelson Mandela."

Django Unchained! Might be a much, but if you're playing Inglorious Basterds...

Thanks for the recommendation. Judas and the black messiah is a good one if only to introduce folks to Fred Hampton. I might add spike lee’s malcolm x to the list as well and maybe do the right thing

[-] JoeByeThen@hexbear.net 2 points 8 months ago

rat-salute-2 Oh, yeah, no doubt. It's still a good movie for showing how racist the system is at its roots. One of Gerald Horne's speeches on The Counter-Revolution of 1776 might be good in that regard, as well.

That MalcomX speech is a bit rough as it goes off on House N Words and Field N Words, but the back half of the speech is REALLY good. It's especially relevant in context of how BLM has basically been neutralized.

Grass is Greener is basically The 13th but with an entry point from the history marijuana. I think it's on Netflix.

Oh, that's one I haven't seen yet. It looks really cool!

Thanks for the suggestion!

Killers of the Flower Moon was very good

[-] ComradeVark@hexbear.net 3 points 8 months ago

La Haine, Paris is Burning, Black Panthers (1968) (could be a bit much?). Harlan County, USA and Matewan both have elements on including african americans in the unions.

I remember this being decent: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0492447/ (Black Gold, 2006) about global coffee production.

Great idea, the horrors of commodity production are always a good tool to shatter perspectives
