The State Bank of Vietnam’s disgraced inspection chief Do Thi Nhan said she regrets taking a bribe of US$5.2 million to cover up wrongdoing at Saigon Commercial Bank.

[...]

She pleaded with the court to show leniency given her remorse and other mitigating factors like handing in the entire bribe money to authorities and excellence performance at work earlier. But prosecutors said the mitigating factors notwithstanding, her crimes were "exceptionally cunning" and worthy of a life sentence for bribery.

[...]

The prosecutors have recommended capital punishment for her for committing severe crimes over a long period and causing irrevocable consequences.

Her only true regret is getting caught

Wow that's very sad. Now face the wall.

[-] birdcat@lemmy.ml 29 points 7 months ago

i mean how cruel would it be to let her live with all that shame ...

[-] 201dberg@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 7 months ago

Anyone that steals that much money does not have the ability to feel shame. Only remorse in being caught.

"We shall collect and document your tears. Now please turn and face the wall."

You may feel "shame and remorse" over a fraud of a couple thousand dollars, but at 12 billion it is clear you have no concept of shame.

Imagine what 12 Billion dollars is.
The AVERAGE of workers generates something like 1-1.2 million dollars worth of labor in one lifetime of labor. (Under the current value of labor in a capitalist society)
A billion dollars is the LIFETIME of work of about 830-1000 humans. Their entire life's contribution working. So 12 billion dollars is potentially the lifetime labor of 12 thousands lives.
Now let's assume you work for 50 years of your life (which is pretty low in today's world). And also have a 40 hour work week (also kind of low compared to what a lot of ppl have to do to survive).
That's 2,080 hour of work a year. 50 years for a lifetimes work. 12 thousand lifetimes of work. By this somewhat rough and impromptu estimation what she stole equates to 1.2 billion hours of work.

Do Thi Nhan was the inspector who was bribed with 5$ million to cover up the 12 billion, she's the one saying she's ashamed and remorseful. the people who stole/defrauded 12 billion were Truong My Lan and Vo Tan Hoang Van

i mean some of you might hold the same opinions of a 5 mil bribed official but it seems like the impression ITT was that she was the 12b thief

[-] Lemmygradwontallowme@hexbear.net 11 points 7 months ago

She had been merely following instructions given by her boss and former deputy chief inspector Nguyen Van Hung, who made the final decision on the inspection results and was responsible for reporting the bank’s situation to the government, they said.

They also pointed out that the testimonies by property developer Van Thinh Phat’s chairwoman Truong My Lan and former SCB CEO Vo Tan Hoang Van indicated there was no agreement that Nhan would accept any bribe.

And since the bribe was only paid after the inspection had already been completed, it should not have influenced her decisions, they argued, seeking leniency.

I can see that... still a dickhead in my opinion, but I guess the chief inspector and the property developer should be caught in the fallout....

the property developer should be caught in the fallout

yeah they're also on trial, lol this article centering a comparative bit player is an odd introduction to the affair

[-] birdcat@lemmy.ml 6 points 7 months ago* (last edited 7 months ago)

yea there are more than 30 ppl on trial but imo the head of the Inspectorate and Supervision Departmenth of the SBV can by definition not just be be a "bit player".

but even if, sometimes it just feels good to read about that stuff, and open any news site any day (lets say today) and you will find something about a corruption arrest 😇

maybe bit isn't quite the word, 'supporting' to string along the theatrical allusion. i mostly was just on the apparent confusion between her and the ones at the head of it. this is a super great story tho, imagine if anglo civil servants ever faced consequences like this stalin-feels-good

[-] birdcat@lemmy.ml 4 points 7 months ago

yea get it, i added the header of the article to the post to clarify it.

This is self-evident enough; I think I’m just typing out my “reform and opening up” anxiety. Private banks in socialist countries are a nexus for a potential bourgeois recapturing of the state. They’re deputized to create debt-based money out of thin air, which is potentially a lot of moola slushing around.

[-] lil_tank@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 7 months ago

Reform and opening up was a dangerous path, but maybe all path were as dangerous and even maybe it was the least dangerous path

[-] davel@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 7 months ago

Yup, and I’m in no position to judge.

[-] D61@hexbear.net 17 points 7 months ago

Bullshit.

You can be ashamed and remorseful if you do a fraud for a few thousand or maybe even tens of thousands of monies... But when you're up in the hundreds of thousands and especially billions, you stopped caring thousands of millions of monies ago.

Death penalty.
