My preferred way to browse here is using All and blocking communities I don't want to see. That way I get exposed to new things I wouldn't seek out on my own (for example: British archaeology)

I accidentally blocked a community while trying to block a user and when I went to unblock it, I saw I had 1250 communities filtered. If I had to guess, 90% are either porn, sports, or anime.

What about you?

i wasn't even aware that was a thing you could do, but i suppose it makes sense.

You can block communities?

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 3 points 8 months ago

Yes. Not sure what app you use but for me I click the dots in the corner of a post and pick Block Community and Block User

[-] Hadriscus@lemm.ee 4 points 8 months ago

It works on Jerboa

Over a thousand, for sure? I hate memes. I'm just scrolling light conversations. No deep politics or debates. No depressing news, anime, etc

I also browse exclusively all. I only bother blocking the non-English and porn communities. Looks like that's 315, for me.

Wait, you're blocking porn, sports, and anime?

Those are the fun parts...

[-] glimse@lemmy.world 4 points 8 months ago

Porn: there's so much of it on here. If I didn't block most of it, it'd be half my feed

Sports: I simply do not give a shit about the stats of some cricket game I didn't know about

Anime: I'm frankly just sick of the art style that so much of it shares. I don't dislike anime as a rule but for a lot of shows, you could drop any character into another anime and they'd fit right in. And on top of that, I can't stand the hyper sexualization of immature female characters that is so prevalent in the genre. I don't think middle schoolers are hot so I don't like when "sexy" characters act like one

I don't blacklist.

I whitelist, view Subscribed rather than All.

What I want to go hunting for new communities to subscribe to, I use lemmyverse.net, which can see all of the communities on the Threadiverse, not just the ones that someone on my instance has subscribed to.

Got 20 communities blocked and coincidentally 20 users blocked 🙃

[-] kindenough@kbin.social 4 points 8 months ago

336 apparently, I did not realize I blocked that many.

I have two accounts. One has all the more serious news type stuff blocked and the other is unfiltered. Its nice to be able to take a break from reading about war and disease. I get most of that news from Mastadon anyway.

700 at last count

I block all communities based around a single sports team and most sports, also any based around a geographic location smaller than national-level. Anything based around a state, city, town etc is always negative.

About 330. A crap ton of porn stuff, furry, bondage, etc. Several non-English communities. Operating system related stuff like Linux or android. A few “normal” communities that are on instances that don’t allow much dissent or contrary opinion.

[-] Trollception@sh.itjust.works 3 points 8 months ago

I try to block communities discussing politics, cringe memes and Linux. I have about 50 blocked at the moment.

[-] Darkassassin07@lemmy.ca 3 points 8 months ago

Almost 200 pretty much exclusively from lemmynsfw before you could block a whole instance.

Once they added that, I've blocked very very few communities.
