After taking this photo they started bucking up like a horse, probably trying to scare me. I saw a bunch of them on a walk I took yesterday they were kinda all over. Was pretty big like the size of my thumb

That's a female stag beetle. There is some info on them here.

They are very impressive.

I don't know enough about beetles or bugs to know if this is true or not so I'll assume this is what it's called until someone says otherwise bug-facts

There honestly should be a children's bug encyclopedia where kids get to name bugs before learning what their "latin/common" names are, just for funsies.
